I am so tired of Serena being crucified about her looks and physique, not only on social media, but also by announcers and journalists. It is really quite sad. I would invite all to read this article about what has been said about Serena. Her accomplishments are quite rare, and she is clearly one of the greatest to have ever played the game, but no one talks about that.
What? She’s won 20 slams and is indisputably the greatest women’s tennis player ever. No one doesn’t know that.
My point is that her size makes her physically and emotionally intimidating. The mental challenge of facing Serena as an opponent is a component of her success in addition to her skill as a player.
Serena is a tremendous player with a phenomenal record, but not “indisputably the greatest women’s tennis player ever”. Margaret Smith won a singles Grand Slam and 24 Grand Slam singles titles in all…a record that still stands. in addition, she won the mixed doubles Grand Slam twice, and 19 Grand Slam women’s doubles titles. She won a title of 64 Grand Slam titles in all! She was an Aussie and also a physically imposing player, but was never subjected to the sorts of attacks re her strength and physique that Serena faces. I don’t get it…Haven’t we moved on from the era when women needed to be demure? Male athletes are celebrated for being intimidating on the court and imposing their will on their opponents…Somehow Serena is denigrated for the same thing.
Not by me, if that’s what you mean. I am simply pointing out the obvious and in fact making your point. Serena is physically imposing in a way that her sister (are others) are not. Or maybe it’s just me, and waiting to receive serve from Venus, from Sloane Stephens, or from Maria Sharapova is equally intimidating.
By the way, I attended a women’s college and consider myself a feminist. I’ve also played competitive tennis. That doesn’t mean I have to pretend that Serena’s size has no bearing on her abilities. Haven’t we moved on from that? I also think it’s obvious, barring serious injury in the near future, that Serena will beat Margaret Smith’s record with ease.
Serena still hasn’t broken Graf’s record of 22. Whether she will or won’t I have no idea. She also has some very bizarre early round losses in slams and not just recently. I don’t recall Steffi or Monica (who, imo, would have won a ton more slams if she hadn’t been stabbed) having such early rounds loses.
I’m not a Serena fan at all. I cannot stand her attitude on court or how she reacts after a loss. I like Venus much more.
Djoker has an interesting 1st rd. Kolhi is no pushover on any surface.
Ferrer has withdrawn. LL put in his place. If he had withdrawn before OOP released draw would have been subject to change and Kolhi would have moved into 32nd seed, Isner into 16th seed and Rafa’s QF.
Nice work by Tio Toni.
For the women toughest 1st rd tomorrow is Bencic vs Pironkova. Bencic just won Eastbourne, but grass is by far Pironkova’s best surface. Pick 'em match.
Novak was a little rusty. He only played two matches since the French Open. Besides, Kohlschrieber is a very consistent all-court player. He gave Federer a hard time ten days ago.
My brother just emailed me to tell me he got center court tickets for tomorrow. Federer, Murray (who he’s never seen live before), and Kvitova (his fav girl player). I told him I hate him. Not really, I’m just jealous. But I am hoping Murray and Federer will be on court 1 next week when we go for the quarters
I’m jealous of everyone who has tickets! My girlfriends have CC tkts Thursday. Another friend got them in the lottery but couldn’t go so she gave them to them.
I hope you get some good matches when you go. Somehow I doubt they’d put Murray on Court One for a qtrfinal match. Fed maybe. They might stick him there for his next match or 3rd rd. My friends would be very happy if VB was on Court One next match.
