The Tennis Thread

Awww…he had a few good points - but obviously nothing left in the tank and with Gael becoming serious player it was NID. Tbh, he’s not as much fun to watch now but maybe he’ll finally be able to snag a GS.

In very good news the EvilChestBumpers lost to the lovelyLopezes. And Sunshine miraculously is back in the semi’s, albeit at the expense of injured random Eastern European. I heard she’ll jump from a ranking in qualifyingland to #29.

Her current ranking is #48, nothing to sneeze at, but she will become the highest ranked Latvian.

^i was referring to Caro’s ranking.

Wow. What a buzzkill for Djo and Jo.

^ How about sitting in front row loge for Nole’s 6-game match against Youzhny…:frowning:

Unbelievable! Djoker must be paying these guys off!

I realize you are djoking Emily (well, maybe not! ), but I was not surprised by Youzhny’s or Tsonga’s retirements. The US Open is obviously the last major of the season. By September, many players are nursing nagging injuries. Youzhny is 34 years old, and Tsonga, no spring chicken himself (by tennis standards), was unsure whether he would be fit to play at the USO to begin with.

That being said, Djokovic has been very lucky. Assuming he continues to play well and remains healthy, he should have a considerable advantage over his next two opponents.

On the other hand, there was talk that Nole was getting desperate for a real match to get him in the right frame of mind. Presumably Jo gave him at least some of that, even if it was only for 2 sets.

I would say the last two matches (Edmund and Tsonga) did the job. It’s not like Nishikori, Murray or Wawrinka or Del Potro played significantly better opponents. They obviously had more playing time, but their opponents have been paper tigers. Speaking of Nishikori, I am glad he won. Murray signed autographs at the end. That was classy of him.

Hehe, I love how Murray glares at his box when things turn sour, as though it’s their fault. I’m hoping for a delPo - Djoker final, as tight as their OG tilt.

Happy for Nishikori but I’ve never been a Murray fan.

I am with you Dunboyne. I also want to see a Djokovic/Del Potro final. It should be a great final…if they make it through and remain healthy.

LMAO as VB done in by the Gong Show!

Feel badly for JMdP but not a surprising result, IMO. I also think Stan would have a better chance in a final against Djoker. JMdP has a sore shoulder and he’s played a lot of tennis the last month and I think his tank is only half full.

I agree emily, although Del Potro’s serve is better at neutralizing Djokovic…not that Stan’s backhand is any less effective. Both have tremendous firepower.

Either way, assuming Djokovic overcomes Monfils in 3 or 4 sets, I think he is going to be far better rested than his finals opponent…unfairly so. Djokovic will have played 8-9 hours in total in the 6 rounds leading up to the final, compared to the 16-18 hours played by his opponent. Should his wrist and arm hold up, Djokovic will have the edge.

Don’t think I’ve ever seen Serena look as listless as last night. So tired of the US Open media and others promoting her race to a 23rd GS title. Give it a rest already. And, why does the bottom half of the women’s draw get a day off, like the men, and the top half doesn’t? Seems patently unfair.

Gotta root for the underdog-- go Special Kei!!!

@Snowdog, the top half gets the extra day off by starting tourney on Tuesday. Also, the women only play best of 3 and at regular tour tournements don’t get a day off at all between matches - except the top seeds who get a first round bye. They are very used to playing without any days off between matches.

For the men this year top half has two days off before semi and bottom half only one as their extra day off was first day of tourney. Also, the men’s tourney is a day longer then the women’s so no need to play back to back (though both sides used to when semi’s were on Saturday (same for women when their semi’s were on Friday.)

Also, Serena asked to play the first match last night. She could have asked to be second on and had more time. She also requested and was granted to start tourney on Tuesday to give her shoulder one more day’s rest. She would have known that meant playing back to back qf and sf.

I’m also calling BS on her “injury.” IMO, they thought this match was going to be a cakewalk to the final. Serena was shell shocked and at a complete loss as to what to do.

So happy for KaPlish and Angie. And so great there is finally a new #1.

I’ll be pulling for Stan in the semi. Kei’s played Djoker a whole bunch of times this year when going in to match he looked great then completely flopped. Stan’s beaten Djoker several times at slams and in a final.

Hoping Gael, at the very least, doesn’t get injured!

It’s nice to see a player outgun Serena for a change – it must have come as quite a shock to her. There’s definitely more than one way to beat SW: groundstroke consistency plus run everything down à la Vinci and Kerber; give her a taste of her own medicine like KaPlish; or a solid hybrid game like Ruth at her best. Just not many women who fit the bill. It’s surprising. I don’t think SW is as great a mover (at least not in the last few years) as the pundits believe, so you’d think there would be more players who can give her problems. Not that KaPlish can move, but when you can bomb serves and hit the ball flat and keep the ball in play, you’re golden.

No one giving Monfils a chance?! Watch out if he can win the first set. He’s all business now, sold his dog and pony show. I’m taking Kei over Stan. Murray has been on fire recently so Kei’s victory has to mean something.

Pliskova is a bad match up for SW. She is one of the few women who can attack Serena’s seconds serve. It clearly affected Serena’s serving and brought down first serve points won percentage. Pliskova also moved and defended better than Serena.
Halep should also get a partial credit for the outcome of yesterday’s match.

Gael. Sigh. Always the same fill in the blank.

Djoker really needs to ditch that stupid celebration.
