The Ultimate Supply List for Boarding School

Anyone familiar with Southern California weather or any place near there? My mom and I are trying to get a sense how it normally is over there since we didn’t get any clear answers or information from students/faculty and online.

Warm in winter. Very hot in fall (up until November) and late spring. Very very hot in may and June.

This year has been unusually rainy. If you do a search for average monthly temperatures and the city name, you should get some good baseline information. Keep in mind that it is pretty dry, not at all humid in Southern California, so temperatures might feel different than what you are used to.

  • I have like 3 lamps lmao
  • ok this is so stupid but bring a hot water bag thing you can charge bc my hands get cold easily and its saved me in many occasions

Back in the day before the magma cooled, we had this bag that required no charge; you simply filled with hot water.

Hi guys I wonder if I can bring a hot water bottle that can boil water for my instant noodle to school ?

At most places, it wouldn’t be allowed

Nooooooo😭 I can’t live without boiling water

You might be able to have/use one in the dorm common kitchen space depending on the school you are attending! My son has one :upside_down_face:

does anyone know what the weather in wisconsin will be like? im an international and i live in a pretty tropical country and my school is in wisconsin- im not sure what to pack

most dorms will have a common area where you can microwave water. you’ll be fine

C-O-L-D winters.

For perspective, this winter was mild. The average temperature was 28F in Wisconsin - that’s still below freezing (32F = 0C).

It should still be warm when school starts (yes, it gets hot in the summer), so perhaps it would be better to get your winter clothes after moving in.

oof- thats quite the change i have to get used to- would u recommend bringing any heating devices or anything? im like severely lacking in warm items

A lot of dorms have a microwave in the common area which can be used to cook noodles.

The dorms and buildings will be adequately heated. No heating devices necessary. I doubt that space heaters would be allowed (fire hazard).

What you need are adequate winter clothes, and that is easier to order once you’re actually on campus - winter clothing takes up space. At the bare minimum you need a winter coat, winter boots, heavy socks, mitten/gloves, hat/scarves.

It won’t get all cold at once, so you don’t need everything by the first day of class.

You will be fine with a warm down winter jacket (get a good one- don’t cheap out on this one!).

Also bring a good fleece, plenty of warm loungewear (I’d recommend lots of long warm pants, flannels, etc).

You may want to buy electric handwarmers if you’ll be spending time outside.

Does your school pair you and your family with a current family at the school? If so, they would be a good resource for winter gear and when you will need it. In fact, they are good resource for what all else you need to bring. This is true for everyone who getting ready to embark on BS.
