<p>What do you think is the value of going to a school that sends a good number of students to US universities each year?</p>
<p>Personally, I don’t know about students getting accepted from lesser known schools in my city (Mumbai), but my school counselor says that the number is very low. My counselor said that colleges prefer ‘reputable’ schools, because, in general, they offer more opportunities and have a proven track record because past students have gone on to do well at those colleges. Also, most colleges cannot trust every single school from foreign countries as there is no way of verifying whether the schools is being entirely honest or hiding details over email or telephone, so the the schools that they visit on their annual trips are evaluated in the way all US high schools are. So the schools they do not get to evaluate are at somewhat of a disadvantage in the application process. </p>
<p>This notion seems logical, as colleges would certainly not want a student to lie about their credentials for acceptance. Then again, they would probably read the applications of students from ‘less reputable’ schools with a grain of salt, and treat them normally as long as they did not contain anything too farfetched. </p>
<p>Even I would like an answer to that. On one hand many people are of the opinion that coming from places that do not send a lot of students to top schools may offer to an advantage, while others, like your counselor, say that coming from a ‘reputable’ high school that has a number of students getting into top universities each year is preferable to the admission officers. Two contradicting schools of thought that both make some kind of sense.</p>
<p>From previous conversations on TiT20 and other threads, it has become a general consensus that colleges don’t really care which school you come from. I mean, if your school is a feeder school, they just know it better and therefore, it makes the decision process a lot easier on them. However, you stand at no disadvantage whatsoever by going to a less well-known school.</p>
<p>From experience, I know that most of these ‘reputable’ schools have the same cheating / fake recommendation systems. Colleges know of this.</p>
<p>The ‘repute’ of your school shouldn’t bother you.</p>
<p>EDIT: Also, most feeder schools are rather large. DPS RKP alone has a senior class of 1000 kids. Statistics will tell you that there are bound to be a higher number of absolute acceptances to good universities from schools with larger senior classes. Of course, please take this generalization for what it is. Don’t attack me for stating that every large school is a feeder school.</p>
