The Worst College Campuses You Have Seen...

Suny Albany
Merrimack College

I know this will draw some fire but I though Georgetown’s campus was kind of ugly

i agree Bjo. Georgetown had a lot of old run down buildings and a lot of the buildings don’t even match. haha. and don’t even get me STARTED on that ugly beast of a library lol

It’s pretty hard to call UIUC ugly. Do these pics look ugly?

http://gregorykoger.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/uiuc-quad.jpg

But I guess you’re entitled to your opinion if you really don’t like it.

I don’t know if UMD College Park’s campus is ugly, but the surrounded area is. I’m not talking about DC. College Park is in this little town-like place that’s horrendous. I am doing my best not to end up at College Park (I’m in-state so it is a low match for me but a financial safety). On the other hand, I’ve had people tell me they love College Park. Oh well. I also have to say that there’s some truth behind “don’t venture off John Hopkins’ campus unless you’re packing heat”. Baltimore is a rough place.

What do you all think of Emory? Nice area, and they manage to make the campus seem beautiful in all of their literature, but when I visited I was instantly disappointed. For part of the day it was kind of cloudy, so the “inspired by Italy” architecture just seemed… weird, like kind of constantly-dirty-looking. That sandy-marble-y stone that they use on their buildings just doesn’t seem fit for the grassy suburb in which Emory sits. Also, maybe what I also disliked a bit was that all of the buildings were kind of small. There was no real grandeur. But I mainly just dislike the awkward marble-stone that they used… I just remember thinking during my campus tour that it was such a disappointment that the school used all of their riches to create this weirdly out-of-place, nothing-special campus.

My mom didn’t let me apply to Barnard because she thought the campus seemed very run-down.

I really disliked Boston University… I don’t think I need to argue that point. Other than BU, though, I really didn’t visit any truly hideous campuses.

If a college can’t bother to get its tangible physical presence right, what does that suggest about their approach to the intangible? As a test, are there colleges that underperform the trouble taken to make them well laid out and beautiful? Princeton just tore down some perfectly good dorms that had a track record of promoted student bonding just because everyone thought they were ugly. And it is a great school. Any beautiful but bad colleges out there?

MIT had the fugliest campus I’ve seen, followed by Penn. With MIT, it might be a case of the season, since all the fields were basically mud and the buildings were dirty and gray. But the facilities and restrooms had maintenance problems, which I found irritating. Penn was just too dirty, and there was construction and potholes randomly around campus.

I’d definitely say ASU and UCSD…they were both very “cement” and industrial looking…kind of grey and unfriendly

in_rainbows when I visited Emory it was great, but I can see what you mean about the buildings. I can see that I thought that it was expected for a school of Emory’s caliber to look like that

I think Emory is gorgeous! The architecture is incredibly stunning and the marble sidework on all of their buildings is sublime!

Further, I found the natural elements (flowers, trees, shrubbery, curious squirrels) really beautiful!

Here’s something: how do you feel about colleges with crappy websites? Seriously. If they cannot find a student from the Graphics Design department to improve their second-grade level website, I refuse to go there. This ranks above campuses for me because websites are easily changes, campuses are expensive to change and often quite old.

Applicannot, that drives me crazy as well. If a college’s website isn’t professional then it makes the whole college seem unprofessional.

As much as I like WashU, their website leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I visited Ithaca College over the summer. It looked EXACTLY LIKE my high school, even the metallic letters they used to label the buildings.

…

Needless to say, I did not apply.

omg i know exactly what you guys mean about the websites!!! some of the websites ive visited have links that dont even work, i mean thats the first stop interested student are gonna make, and its not a very good incentive to visit or apply if the website doesnt even work it shows they dont really make the effort to try and give student an incentive to go there! veryy annoying

^^I agree about Georgetown, the campus just left me feeling like…it wasn’t a campus. I loved the program they had for SFS, but I visited Georgetown twice and both times it seemed to lack the campus feel. I think it has to do with the hill thing–things are on different levels and it just doesn’t feel like a united place to me.

To all the people who said Penn, UChicago, and Northwestern…I have to disagree. I LOVE Uchicago’s (I’ve spent a lot of time there, and I think how much I like other campuses depends on how similar they are to UChicago’s) and I thought Penn’s was quite pretty. I also visited that in July, but…

U Penn was horrible. My B sat in the car and could not believe that they were on campus. Decided that they did not want to go there because of the general appearance

This is totally subjective. To be quite frank, I hate old buildings.

UAF is hideous. The new museum is breathtaking (and some of the lecture halls aren’t bad), but the dorms are Soviet-bloc style concrete cubes.

Lol, I love that Penn is so incredibly love/hate. I’ve actually been asked to “explain the appeal” of Penn, while on the other hand, so many people are Penn-obsessed and it’s gotten to be very selective. It’s either perfect for you or you hate it, it seems.

University of Redlands, easily. Ithaca College is pretty ugly as well, but not as bad as U of R.
