The Worst College Campuses You Have Seen...

I found UConn’s to be way too isolated and one of the buildings looked like a really old factory. I don’t hate the campus though.

Ithaca College looks terrible. It has no air of collegiate-ness

Michigan Tech is pretty terrible too, tall rectangular buildings made out of orange-brown brick, scattered randomly… awful freshman dorms too. I was there for a summer camp

syracuse university

Ithaca College looks like a maximum security prison.

Carnegie Mellon has a pretty ugly campus as well.

The weirdest college (or whatever) we saw was the Virginia Military Institute. It was like a weird fortress. They did, however, have Stonewall Jackson’s stuffed horse, so that makes up for a lot.

Hampshire is hideous and a waste of money. If I don’t feel like actually going to college, I can do that for free, no $50,000 is necessary. Concrete 60s architecture, yuck.

SUNY Albany–whoever thought that was a good idea?

Rutgers, ugh!

UIC… yuck.

LogicWarrior – I agree completely with your assessment of Ithaca College. Pretty gruesome, especially in comparison with its neighbor, Cornell.

But, U of Redlands? What’s not to like about the looks of that campus? The town has nothing to offer, but the campus looks like a high-end country club studded with stately, neo-classical buildings. Beautiful, manicured lawns; mountains in the distance; all pretty walkable.

I looked at lots of colleges all over the country with my S and D and I think U of R was one of, if not the, nicest schools around.

Obviously, this is all subjective. And lots of people prefer old over new or vice versa, or urban over rural or vice versa, etc. But, there are some schools (UC Santa Cruz; Colgate; Stanford; Elon; Redlands) that I wouldn’t have expected to make anyone’s ugliest list!

I’ve driven through U of R about 15-20 times on my way up to Big Bear. I’ve driven with various people and not one of them has agreed with you. It’s an ugly campus with ugly buildings in an ugly town, and it’s so run down that the website’s pictures focus on the pretty mountains instead of the ugly school. How anyone would want to go there is beyond me.

Vanderbilt’s campus is not so pretty

I grew up in Davis and just love the campus and the town. IMHO the town is almost the perfect town and the campus is just big and open and clean and friendly with a variety of building types, lots of lawn and green space and I even like the cows…although they are over in one corner of the campus…it’s not like you would ever see them unless you went to look for them.

Davis is a terrific campus.

University of Tennessee, Knoxville did NOTHING for me.

I don’t love really urban campuses so NYU, Emerson and schools that just occupy buildings on city streets…I find those have no atmosphere…

An attractive college needs a quad to play frisbee on!

monroylobo- I thought Vanderbilt was a very nice campus. Its not as nice as some of the ones I’ve seen like William and Mary or UVA, or Miami Ohio, but I liked it.

We drove through West Virginia University one time and it was the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen

I think most state schools in Illinois look lame these days, since funding is so bad from legislature. Once, UIUC had an amazing quad with well kept buildings and nice landscaping, but I agree, it looks dirty and buildings need work. Illinois State, another “quad campus” and the oldest state school was once unattractive, but has done the best job in renovating old buildings, adding new ones that fit the Georgian style, and the town and local businesses have major renewal projects that match university architecture. Other schools like Northern Illinois, Eastern Illinois and Western Illinois all grew too fast in the 60s without much pre-planning, and are rather unexciting. Southern Illinois has the best setting (a wooded lake on campus- SIU is the top party school in Illinois, but also ranks at the bottom in academics). Unfortunately, SIU also looks really rundown. By far the worst campus is Bradley University, which really isn’t much of a campus, but scattered buildings in an old neighborhood.

Bowling Green, Xavier (OH) and the University of Cincinnati win in my book. Drexel gets Honorable mention.

UMBC is pretty bad…

University of South Carolina has a great campus!, lol

Cleveland State :(

University of Rhode Island!
but im bias because i grew up near it and it’s nothing special

Since there are a few posters that sound like they have never even stepped foot on the Texas Tech campus, I’ll post a link. (maybe not the best…but should never be mentioned on a “worst campus” list)

this thread would not be complete without a mention of - Stony brook!! And most of the SUNYs actually. So ugly only their mother could love them.
