I am hearing about some acting programs having “cut” programs. What exactly does that mean, which programs may cut students during their training, and how much should that play into deciding on a school?
It’s not that common anymore. Depaul used to do it, and I think Emerson, but they don’t anymore. I’m not sure if any of the big schools do.

There are a number of discussions in these threads which discuss cut programs. If you search “cut program” in the Search Forum box you will see the various discussions. Below is a discussion of Emerson’s old cut program and a fairly recent discussion of Wright State’s program. In a traditional cut format, a school might accept 30 BFA students with the intention of only granting say 20 BFA certificates or degrees. The “cut” students could be re-directed to a similar BA program or out of the program all together. Other schools would cut students who were not up to the rigor of a BFA program (work ethic issues often). The format does not appear as prevalent as it apparently once was. The programs my S looked at last year and the ones my D is looking at for next year generally have regular juries where students are evaluated for strengths/weaknesses and provided feedback as to the areas where work is needed. However, at least in the programs we’ve researched, once they are accepted into the BFA program, they are permitted to continue.

@whileyoung I’m not sure any programs practice official “cut” programs anymore, however there are a few programs of note that have been shown to ask students to leave after some time within the school. DePaul for instance has done away with their “cut” program for a few years now and as noted on their website expect all 32 accepted students to complete the four years. Though they do note some students may be asked leave at anytime during the first two years.
The same goes for Purchase, CMU and any of the other heavy hitters down to the smaller liberal arts programs you see frequently thrown around the board. The reality is-albiet a dismal one-there is no way any of the programs can possibly gage the full potential of a prospective student within the short window they see us at auditions and most of them don’t even offer callbacks. It’s not surprising that after a few semesters they may deem a student no longer able to fit the rigor of the program (in their eyes).
Is it fair after having invested so much TLC into a program? Depends on who you ask. However it seems to be the way life works trekking about the BFA doldrums. This being said imo you should choose a school that best fits you and your needs…to worry about what likely will never happen to you and have that be the deciding factor is shorting yourself. :((
