Most of the schools that I am applying to do not have film majors. So I was wondering whether it would be possible to get a B.A. in Theatre Arts before moving onto a M.F.A in Film at a good film school. Is this a good plan or are there any other alternatives?

Do you want to be a filmmaker, or an actor in films?

If you’re talking about filmmaking, then theater could be a good undergraduate major, depending on the school–I would lean toward a program that offers good playwriting and directing opportunities, for starters. Try to take a semester or two of basic photography (not a Photoshop-oriented class but fundamental camera use, preferably black-and-white) and creative writing. Film studies classes might be offered through different departments as well. I’ve known people who went into film from a variety of undergrad programs, including English and visual arts. Look for student filmmaking organizations, which may or may not be linked with an actual film department, and if you end up at a school that doesn’t offer any production classes, you can certainly find opportunities in the summers. Good luck!

I am interested in filmmaking, though I wouldn’t say no if someone needs me to do some acting.
Thanks for all that information, Times3! I’ll definitely take a look at the types of courses you mentioned :)
