These fees! They're killing me!

Good gracious! All of these fees I’m paying-- Application fees. Audition fees. Acceptd fees. Fees to send the ACT/SAT scores. I figure I’ll spend about $1400 by the time everything is submitted. AND-- we haven’t even traveled anywhere yet!

All you parents of Juniors— start saving now! LOL

(and just brought younger child to the orthodontist today for the first appointment…ouch.)

The fees were crazy last year. When the common app was submitted I thought I could see the credit card smoking!

I realized later that I could have sent less ACT/SAT scores than I did. Many times the score on the transcript is enough to start and once accepted artistically if they need the official you can send it then.

OMIGOSH! I feel the same way. My joke is if I were to prick my finger a 50 dollar bill would roll out. I think I’m up to a 100 dollar bill now!

I have bought plane tickets for the 'fieds, so I think I’m over $2K now and I’ll probably start pre-paying the hotels to get that out of the way. SAT scores haven’t been sent yet AND what about those senior fees at the high schools?!! I’m so. DONE!!!

broadway95…SERIOUS?! That’s good to know. It’s probably different for each school, but I will definitely check!

GSOMTMom-I didn’t sent until after Unifieds and only to the schools my D was still interested in after auditions and I still realized that I didn’t need to send all of them even then. Definately worth checking out.

Oh wait, I have to buy photo paper and ink to print photos and resumes, the speakers for the ipod for auditions, have to have audition tracks made, not to mention leotards, audition dresses, dance shoes. I will say my daughter has been doing her part to buy audition gear with her earnings, but it’s just so much!

Right there with you guys. Every time I think its over I pay another fee.

Not to mention…the accompanist, the sheet music, the plays - I have a library of plays in my house at this point. He just mentioned “I can really use a new pair of jazz shoes”.

Oh, yes-- Didn’t even include the clothes-- son needs a whole new set of audition and dance clothes/shoes. And an ipod speaker thingy… and this… and that…

Holidays are gonna be a little sparse at our house this year.

MTMajorCook & SU88MTA … I just ordered dance wear for my S from Discount Dance. Found slip on jazz shoes for $10! :)

Thanks - I think I get emails from Discount Dance, I’ll check it out. I am so glad his tap shoes still fit, they were $70 and he loves them…so fingers crossed there is no growth spurt in the next few months!

Maybe look at it this way, folks. It’s only a drop in the bucket compared to what you’re going to be paying for the next four years. ;)

^^^ Gee, thanks, alwaysmom! ^^^ LOL

(I don’t even look at the tuition websites anymore…too depressing! Hubby is in charge of that and financial aid/FAFSA, scholarships, etc. My part is applications and auditions.)

alwaysamom, um, nope that didn’t help me!

MTmom2015 I’ll have to check that out. Those shoes are usually unisex. I love the flat shipping fee for Discount Dance. $2.95 I think.

My daughter is a junior MT at NYU and ALWAYS buys her dance attire at Discount Dance!

I assume you all know that dance shoe manufacturers vary in their sizing. It is reasonable to buy replacements online, but it’s risky otherwise. Poor fitting shoes cause injuries.

Drats! Shoes sold out in black.

prodesse is correct; however, we have to buy all my D’s dance and character shoes online as she has a size 11 shoe! Can’t find those in stores anywhere and we live in a major metropolitan area! For years we had to buy her regular shoes at Nordstroms since we couldn’t find her size anywhere else, but in the past few years a DSW opened locally and carry her size thankfully. We were even having to buy her flip flops at Nordstroms, ouch!

Discount Dance is great especially if you know your size for the particular clothing or shoes you are buying. My kids (3) all danced and when they were still growing it was constant new shoes but if we knew which shoe it was and how it would fit, it was easy to order online(if we were just upping a size). It is true that Bloch fits differently than Capezio than another brand and it is risky to purchase online if you are unsure and as prodesse says “poor fitting shoes can cause injuries”. We have a local dance store that is very overpriced and there were times we were forced to purchase shoes there as my son needed to try them on as he has a very wide foot with a high instep. I think non-shoe items are an incredible savings at Discount Dance…my daughter who is a theater/dance major gets all her leotards there and loves it.
The expense of this whole process is mind boggling and any savings anywhere is worth it. We continued to whittle down schools as we went along at every step. His original 13 became 10 applications which ultimately became 8 auditions after certain acceptances he withdrew his application just to save money and avoid another weekend on the road complete with hotel rooms and food.
Now, the focus is paying for his fees and airfare home for the holidays!

So, zonolo, you’re saying it’s neverending, huh? :)

My wife knows what we spent last year. I don’t. If I did I’d probably make my D change her major to engineering, so better I don’t know. Although I overheard my wife say once it was around our tuition cost this year. I’m pretending I never heard that.

I look at the cost of dancewear, scripts, music etc as being in the same category as all the vet medical books and equipment I had to buy for school. It’s a necessary cost of their education! (if that helps…)
