Things everyone's crazy about... that do not interest you

I perused the rest of the thread and came up with more:

PETA
Trendy little boutique stores where the clerks follow you around and ask if you want to see something
Siracha sauce
Thai food
Winter
Root beer

Other things I am just indifferent to, like the Kardashians, although I am jealous that Kris, who is not that much older than me, has all those grandchildren. I would love to have one of those someday.

Wow, @romanigypsyeyes , you’re usually better informed and more open-minded than that. The Mayflower passengers were not the dregs of England (maybe you’re confusing them with the “criminals” such as women who bore children out of wedlock that were transported to Australia?) They were fleeing religious persecution, an age-old story that persists all over the world.

And the Jamestown settlers did not resort to cannibalism.

I’m with you on the not being proud of ancestors thing, though. None of us can take credit for our forebears, and some of them weren’t so nice.

I actually like genealogy–below, I will try to keep totally in line with the thread topic.

Doing some genealogical research “lite” showed me historical forces in operation, in the sense that my Dutch ancestors came over when you would expect, my Irish ancestors came over when you would expect, my German ancestors came over when you would expect, my Swedish ancestors came over when you would expect–the English ancestors were a little behind the historical curve, but not out of bounds. This has made me aware that my life circumstances and my choices are influenced to a greater extent than I had realized by present-day forces that will later fit into the “historical forces” category. Also, I became aware that anything we permit to happen in society will sooner or later happen to someone we would care about (maybe generations hence). It’s a stronger impetus to oppose injustice and harmful practices.

Okay, what I don’t care for:

Football
Basketball
Soccer
HGTV shows where people half my age with three times my mortgage limit walk into a kitchen that looks better than mine, and declare it a “total gut job.”
Hot dogs
Hot mustard
Game of Thrones (too violent)

I’m not too proud to admit that I do like Disney World. I had never been there, nor to Disneyland, until I was in my 40’s. Then I went to Disneyland for an afternoon after attending a conference in Anaheim. It was quite different from what I expected, and I was charmed.

Ethan Allen. Just went through the store, and they completely lost me. Nothing that special… Why my buddies go “oohhh” about that furniture… just beats me. It is OK furniture, but I’d rather shop at Dania and Kasala.

Oh, also, leggings outside the gym. I am part of the “leggings are not pants” crowd. I really dislike them, but would not say anything to anyone wearing them, of course!

Leggings as pants

I can cite multiple books if people want to learn about the actual history of the first British settlers here. I already named one.

Notice that what I actually said was Jamestown - or earlier. I was explicit about that. And yes, some Mayflower riders were coming for religious reasons but many on the ship were coming for other, less “noble” reasons. As for calling them “trash,” it’s because that’s what England called them. I came from Irish trash and I’m glad they came… or else I wouldn’t be here.

I literally just went through an extremely deep and extensive dive of American history- all the way back to the origins- for my US History field exams. I wouldn’t make a claim I couldn’t support- especially one that I knew would irritate people who cling to a whitewashed version of history.

Done now. Carry on.

@romanigypsyeyes agree with you on the early settlers’ “lineage” or the lack of it, the American history education is, how to say it without offending many folks, full of whitewash and lies.
Back to the topic, Star Wars and the continued milking of the dead cow.

People who think that the early New England settlers wanted to establish religious freedom really need to read up more.

Traveling & vacations. I always hear about people saving up for their dream vacations but they just stress me out. It’s why my honeymoon was in Ohio lol

Shopping.

I just thought of another one…

IKEA.

mustard, vinegar…even the smell of either one makes my stomach turn

@romanigypsyeyes, had to lol at your post #189. I LIVE for our vacations and traveling! Planning one of my bucket list trips right now and am giddy with excitement. And I love to shop.

Love to see the similarities and differences among us!

The jokes on me…earlier in this thread I listed Alexa. Guess what I won tonight? I was cracking up b/c we were at a charity dinner with people from dh’s company. He works in open source intelligence. Everyone at our table, including dh, was in agreement-no active listening devices in their homes. So looks like I’ll be giving free gift to someone else!

This thread.

-That weird “Would You Rather” thread full of boarding school kids
-All the finance/investing/retirement threads

“Comic book characters and the movies made about them”, couldn’t agree more. But… a few years ago my friend made me watch the tv show arrow ( green arrow from the comic books). And oh my gosh, as a sucker for romantic comedy , it was one of the best things I’ve watched. I mean I have no interest in the whole comic book thing ( I fast forward through the fight scenes) but this is my catnip! It’s funny sweet and deeply romantic. Who knew?

Potato salad (any kind)
Blue cheese (actually makes me vomit)
Any type of boarding school or college rankings thread (CCers seem to love these)

The Winter Olympics
The Summer Olympics

Hydroflasks
Ketchup. (my husband calls me un-American)
Paleo, Keto, other non-carb diets
Designer handbags

Also, @Mommertons “woo-woo stuff” =)) I love my yoga classes for the exercise aspect, but always feel a little ridiculous when it’s time to “ommmm”

ha ha
ketchup, ketchup, ketchup
nearly anything sweet so desserts in general
clothes shopping.
Some people :))
