Things to do in New London?

Thought I would wonder over from the Navy threads . . . Son, as part of his summer sailing cruise, will spend the night in New London at the Coast Guard Academy.
I don’t recall it as being a very attractive town. Any advice on something to do while overnight at the Academy?

the connecticut science museum is great for kids- lots of interactive/hands on activities. its in west hartford, about an hour from new london

For that matter New Haven is less than an hour away. Lots of stuff to do including Peabody Museum(great dinosaur exhibit), Trolley Museum(Branford, one town over), Yale University, Mellon Gallery of Art.

Just remember to check and see if the B&B has air conditioning :)
