Looking for suggestions on things to do and places to eat in Savannah, GA.
I live here. What are your interests? Is it a solo trip? Family? I’ll be glad to try and help.
@apraxiamom It will a be a girls trip, late 40s-early 50s. The group is pretty laid back so I’m thinking maybe something historical, good food, live music etc
Walk around historic district
Seasonally, rent scooter go out to Tybee
Eat fresh seafood
(OK these are the things we actually did…)
Friend suggests the historic on-off trolley (this is where i rented a scooter instead)
Just walking around is a treat. I was there last year on a girls trip. We also did the Hoho bus, which you will like. It’s a nice way to see all of it. We ate at the The Olde Pink House, you need to make reservations, you’ll love it!
One night we also ate at the Six Pence Pub. The movie with Julia Roberts and Dennis Quaid was filmed here. Can’t remember the movie name, but she pulled up in front of it in her pajamas and had a fight with him outside of it. It’s fun and good food.
After dinner, on the same square, we went to see Savannah Live at the Savannah Theatre. I thought it would be hokey, but it was a lot of fun, they were good, and a nice thing to do after dinner,
We went on the paddle wheel for dinner one night and I thought that was underwhelming.
Don’t do the ghost tour. One of the gals wanted to do that and it was just stupid.
We did an architectural tour and that will be worth your time. We did that the first day, glad we did. Gave us a lot of knowledge and history of Savannah.
Hope this helps. It’s beautiful.
I visited with a friend and we really enjoyed the Collins Quarter restaurant, once for dinner and once for breakfast.
The Riverboat tour and the ghost tour were both very underwhelming.
The beauty of the green spaces and the old trees, the houses and architectural beauty of the buildings are my favorite memories.
A trip to Tybee Island is well worth your time. There is a lighthouse on the island.
Cotton & Rye seems to be a very popular trendy restaurant. But there are sooooo… many.
Read Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. I haven’t done the related tour but have heard that it’s interesting if you’re familiar with the book and/or movie.
One piece of advice, don’t go anytime close to St Patrick’s Day!
IDK about your budget but I always check Groupon before I go places and that’s how we found the place on Tybee. Shrimp was being unloaded from the boat on the dock we were sitting on as we ate, was neat. Very casual shack place with very good service. It was Bubba Gumbo’s (not to be confused with the Bubba Gump chain restaurants).
In town we had a great brunch at J Christopher’s. I guess it used to be a garage, it has those giant doors with big glass windows that go up. Great food and open airy atmosphere.
ETA: We walked through some cemeteries and that was neat but didn’t envy the people on the graveyard tours. But I’m not a tour person, much, so YMMV.
The Savannah School of Art and Design (SCAD) has a nice gift shop. I ate lunch in their restaurant and it’s a lovely space: http://www.scadgryphon.com/
I did a ghost tour and while hokey, I enjoyed the experience.
The Juliette Gordon Low home is also a popular site.
“Don’t do the ghost tour. One of the gals wanted to do that and it was just stupid.”
We did a ghost tour years ago and I really enjoyed it. We went to the Juliette Low house. Only ones there. Great fun!
We enjoyed the ghost tour too! Just loved walking around though and visiting the cemeteries too.
Have some fried green tomatoes with remoulade sauce at Huey’s on the River. Yum.
We did a ghost tour that was fun.
Trolley tour.
Paula Deen and her son have a popular restaurant there. We did not try it. I assume it’s still there.
Two family members went to SCAD so I have spent many weekends in Savannah. There are so many restaurants and what was good last week gets horrible reviews the next week. There is good food in Savannah but we never eat on River Street. SCAD museum is nice.
IMO, the squares are the best of the city…each different and lovely and worth exploring. The cemetery is one of my favorite places but I know some are uncomfortable in that environment . There is a store…not even antiques but interesting and odd castoffs that we spent hours in, sorry cant find the name…If you like books, you must go to E Shaver Bookseller.
Aside from eating wonderful food, I loved sitting in one of the squares and either reading or people watching. I also like going to Wormsloe State Historic Site which isn’t far from Savannah. Colonial Park Cemetery is also very interesting to wander around. I also enjoyed walking around the cotton warehouse district one time when there was a art show. I love Savannah and I keep thinking we should rent a place for a month just to really enjoy the city at its own speed.
The Pirates House…stop by for some fried green tomatoes and grits. First time I had both and they were awesome.
@conmama Now that’s my kind of food!
Go to Pinkie’s Bar. Historical dive bar. Jimmy carter danced on the bar when announcing his presidential candidacy.
