this has nothing to do w/ Yale (or maybe it does...)

11 states (or maybe ten…if Oregon hasn’t) have now officially banned gay marriage as well. Ohio has ALSO banned civil unions: “This state and its political subdivisions shall not create or recognize a legal status for relationships of unmarried individuals that intends to approximate the design, qualities, significance or effect of marriage.”

Er…I’m not exactly one to flaunt my political beliefs, but isn’t the last quote just a little bit obviously discriminating…?

…and 11 days

who trusts fox? i go by cnn

I will not sleep until I know!!!

(even if that means no sleep for 11 days)

this is so insane

(update: abc is now saying ohio–>bush, provisional votes will make all the difference and democrats will fight for them!)

okay new update, although I’m sure you all know by now

Bush [basically] won

Depression hits (there is no smiley bad enough to convey my emotions)

gay marriage is being banned not b/c leviticus says that homosexuality is a sin and not because everyone who believes in the ban is a bigot (though I am sure some are). Those who favor a gay marriage ban do so because they feel that traditional marriage between a man and a woman is an important societal institution, and feel that if anybody were allowed to marry (what’s stopping 10 men from marrying 5 women and a dog–afterall who are we to impose if they all love one another?) the institution as a whole would be undermined. Marriage is far more than a podium to tell the world that you love someone, it was put in place to support those wishing to build families, and it plays an important role in the welfare of society (a child raised by a never-married mother is seven times more likely to live in poverty than a child raised by his biological parents in an intact marriage)

i personally believe that everything should be done to protect traditional marriage, though i am not completely convinced yet that gay marriage undermines it. i just wanted to put the real issues at stake–i find it very disingenuous to claim that everyone against gay marriage is a discriminatory bigot and hate monger

Its weird because I can honestly say that the yale CCers are smarter than the president of the United States… pretty sad.

'Tis a dark day for America.

the civil unions ban is a bit homophobic, though. It’s blatantly targeting gays.

although I can’t think of the examples off the top of my head… they are homosexual relationships implied in the bible

ok so no one even considered the rational arguments being offered…

at least the matter is being left to the people and not judges

pre1321–did you see the NYTimes report that Bush’s 125-130 IQ is actually higher than Kerry’s 120. Judging by most of these posts, I’m not so convinced your assertion is accurate

im so sick of the media.
it disgusts me.
after this whole thing, my latin class made me promise to get into government, (like it wasnt already my plan) and they all vowed to help me. I had said i was going to run in 2032 and now they are trying to convince me that 2028 is a better year.
when i run, ill make my campaign slogal something in latin so all you CCers know it is me and vote for me  something like confido laborque, cogunt omnia.
if anybody out there has a better slogan let me kno. lol

Lux et Veritas…

I heard that Bush’s IQ is 80…
perhaps a mistake. I’m curious…where in the NYT does it say that?

Here’s a link to the article:

http://www.nytimes.com/2004/10/24/politics/campaign/24points.html

Here’s an excerpt from an interview with Tom Brokaw where the subject was broached:

Brokaw: “Someone has analyzed the president’s military aptitude tests and yours, and concluded that he has a higher IQ than you do.”

Kerry: “That’s great. More power. I don’t know how they’ve done it.”

Brokaw: “Do you think too many people in your party underestimate?”

Kerry: "I think people have always underestimated President Bush. But I’m proud that in those debates, I didn’t underestimate him. I like the President. I just disagree with his choices.

I am not trying to prop up Bush’s higher IQ to show that he was a better candidate than Kerry (it’s what you do, not what you scored on a test, that matters); I am just so sick of people who, when they can’t make valid arguments based on policy, feel they need to malign the president in such a vicious way. If name calling and baseless ad hominem arguments are the best that the supposed great minds of tomorrow can do, I am more concerned for the future of this nation than all of the liberals purport to be after the president’s victory today.

Its a sad day very sad day

Actually, Bush’s IQ is not 80, its around 120, as estimated by top intelligence experts in the country. Read it in the book “A Matter of Character”.

Personally, I support the same sex marriage ban because marriage refers to the union of a man and a woman. I totally support equal right for same sex couples, as long as they are called unions. Deaming these unions as marriage disgraces religion (not just Christianty, because most religions including judaism and islam) oppose it.

but why is it the federal governments place to decide what opposes religion?

Because if they don’t take a stand, one judge will be able to rule for everyone. Its better and much more democratic if EVERYONE is asked.

its not the federal government’s right at all, in my opinion, to interfere with marriage/union disagreements in the states. I believe that is a state’s right issue. i agree exactly with alukaszewicz, that unions are a RIGHT that everybody deserves as protected under the Constitution, and that calling something a marriage is up to each religious institution to decide individually. I def disagree with the President in his opinion that the government has any right to deny people their guaranteed rights because they are homosexual. The Constitution doesn’t say anywhere that the Federal government has the right to pick and chose who gets what rights. I don’t think that anystate has the right to deny people their rights either…
the problem is that this government has confused the concept of morals with the concept of ethics. but thats a topic for another day…

iplayoboe you answered my rhetorical question beautifully!!! thanks :)
