"Those ECs are weak...."- So what's good?

Here’s my EC’s so far Fresh/Soph Soccer: 2 years
Varsity Swimming: 2 years (much more commitment than you might think, getting there 2 hours before school for workouts and staying 3-4 hours after for practice, I am probably going to be captain senior year)
Club Swimming: 2 years
Fresh/Soph Tennis: 2 years ( I have a shot at captain senior year)
Jazz Band: 2 years
Marching Band: 2 years
Fishing Team: 2 years
Junior Engineering and Technical Society: 1 year ( On research and planning committees)
A/V Club: 2 years
I also have some time volunteering for a (failed) political campaign, maybe 30 hrs. or so.

Is this too much? Where am I lacking?

I agree dont try to force anything that you dont enjoy

fifa190, why do you think you have a shot to be the captain of the tennis team? Will you be promoted to Varsity as a junior? How do you find time to practice and play tennis if you do swim practice 3 hrs every day? Since you are a member of a swim club that means you also attend weekend swim meets frequently. How is your GPA?

Well said post#1126.

Well, here are my ECs: They are awfully concentrated in economics, and I believe that is a good thing:

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT & ECONOMICS SCHOLAR
Persistent, ambitious, and eager high school junior. Aspiring financier and geopolitician since 7th grade. Areas of dedicated independent study and experience include:

Macroeconomics, international political economy
Investment strategy
Active networking
Entrepreneurship, business strategy
Political strategy, international relations
Persuasion on paper and in voice
Philosophy, psychology

EXPERIENCE

Mayor’s Office. 2012-present.
Assisting Mayor with economics, political strategy, and public relations.

High School. 2010 – 2014.
Vice President, cofounder of Model United Nations club. Recognized/awarded in all my conferences for my ability to persuade, and dominate in economics.
Clarinetist with Band since 8th grade. Was elected Treasurer for next year, but will probably decline. I improved the band’s performance/work ethic with the strategies I read about in business books!

Business manager/columnist of student newspaper, set record for most ads sold, first to generate profit. Won award for the best written, most thought provoking articles on real world issues.

EDUCATION

High School. Class of 2014.
Los Medanos College. Summer courses in Computer Science, Macroeconomics (anticipated).

HONORS & STINTS

A couple other people have asked this, but nobody’s answered so I’ll ask it again - Does learning a language on your own (Finnish for example) count as a great extracurricular?

@challengefan

i wouldn’t say that learning a language is great, but what you did with what you learned–essentially it is how you use what you have. did you volunteer at a place with that language; did you go abroad; did you tutor others–what dd you do? learning a language on your own is impressive and i commend you for your motivation, but it would seem outstanding if you applied that language to a way. now i’m not telling you to start speaking finnish to every person in the neighborhood–quite the contrary. be functional and flexible: see a problem or an opportunity and add the language to it if it fits within the context. remember to do something because YOU yourself want to, not just because you want to tack something onto your application!

not saying you do! i mean it in the nicest way possible.

My ECs are so weak and normal compared to the people on here…
Varsity Volleyball (all conference player)
Varsity Soccer (all conference possibly - season’s not over yet)
NHS
Key Club Secretary
ACDEC
VERY Demanding Club Volleyball Team

Summer
Camp Counsellor for various volleyball/soccer camps
Part time job
Typical Food Pantry Work

I’m a sophomore, and I’ve won a couple of awards, but they’re all local. They’re mostly concentrate within the high school. Any advice for me?

getting good ECs means you do a variety of different activities but have a commitment for those particular activities

Snax03- volunteer at an organization but you have to like to do it?

I won a national competition while obtaining 10 varsity letters and being in SGA, FBLA, and NHS and I’m about to run for 2 student offices. Yet apparently… mine are “weak.” Haha, that term is so hackneyed.

Would teaching myself shorthand be considered an extracurricular at all? It did take me many hours over a whole summer to get it down…

9th grade: Chess club

10th grade through 12th grade:
Chess Club (president, already elected)
Science Club
Math Club
Academic Games
National Honors Society

Should I do another EC? Will this line-up be good? For Math and Science I will be doing the competitions.

I plan on running and competing for an officer position in all of these clubs as soon as I can.

I also do a chess club outside of school on Mondays and Saturdays. Do I put this on my application?

You should focus on one or two major ECs that really interest and excite you.

I don’t understand why people are so stressed out about EC’s. Having too many of them looks like your just making yourself look better. I’m playing varsity tennis and volunteering at a medical dispensary because they’re fun and interesting to me. That’s it, just those two EC’s, yet I’m aiming for top 50 universities.

I’d like to believe EC’s aren’t a primary important factor in ones acceptance. I mean for one, not everyone can or wanted to do EC’s depending on where you are from and your lifestyle. In example Im seeing Class Presidents, community services etc. Where I come from, our school was so crappy, no one WANTED to be class president. Who wants to be class president in a violent school? Or do community service in a city where the people aren’t even willing to help themselves? Not everyone comes from a background where we went hiking every weekend, boy scouts from age 6 and was in some top school in a fresh city where you actually have school activities and clubs you even want to be in the first place. Most of my friends didn’t even have a way to get around, not that we wanted to in our area. Of course that doesnt mean you be lazy, you can still do things. But Im just saying not everyone can even have a opportunity to have a stellar EC history. And many of the peope l I knew from my area got in Top 50 Universities etc, they just stayed on the ball, just saying.

I’m thinking of starting something at my school next year, but I’m conflicted as to which one. I’m equally interested in both, but they’re very different.

 1. Starting an exchange program at my school. This would be very difficult and quite time-consuming, but I imagine it would pay off and look unique to colleges.
 2. Starting a vaccine fundraising club. We basically fundraise/spread awareness/write to Congress regarding vaccines for third-world children. This would be easier to manage, but might not be as unique.

I love both, but which one would be more worth it?

Well I am an asian student in junior year. Can anyone please
review my Resume and tell me if it is any good?
