I work at a grad school and am constantly surprised by the number of parents who call me wanting to discuss their offspring’s college-related business. In the immortal words of Tina Fey in “Admission:” If you’re old enough to apply to grad school … you’re too old for your mom to be calling me."

Colleges don’t want to see that your parents were the ones responsible for your application (extracurriculars, etc.). So take initiative and do something by yourself. That’s what I did, and it worked out very nicely.
