Yes, things are fine. Thank you for asking. Sorry - couldn’t respond to your questions as I was not active on this forum.

No problem at all. Glad you are fine and back!

How come you stopped being active?

That’s me lol. I created a thread to track the journey to help others. I will update

@Aquarius7 there are a few other parents of doctors on this forum who would be happy to try to answer any questions you have. We would love to see some more traffic on this part of the forum!

Thank you for the kindness. We are choosing between Hofstra and UMKC now. Leaning to Hofstra now. Want to have a better UG life and Hofstra has a stronger matching list. What else we are missing here?

Happy students tend to do better than unhappy ones…so this criteria should be considered.

Forget about the “stronger matching list”. I’m not sure that is a necessary criteria a @WayOutWestMom can elaborate.

For anything missing…please keep costs in mind. Should your student get continue to the medical school part, it will likely cost over $100,000 a year. Federally funded student loans are now limited to $200,000 in total including any undergrad federally funded loans. And to top that, loans during medical school are limited to $50,000 a year. So…just an FYI as costs and funding for medical school probably needs to be considered.

In addition to cost, I would suggest to consider medical school matriculation requirements. I think Hofsta BSMD conditionally guarantees interview only (not acceptance).

@Aquarius7 i just edited my post…are these two acceptances BS/MD acceptances?

What other acceptance you have? And why these 2?

Those are the only two BSMD programs we got accepted. Luckily cost is not our main concern at this moment. Hofstra requires 3.6 GPA and 80% MCAT to matriculate, which sounds pretty reasonable? 80th percentile at the first sitting must be achieved — is a little bit scaring. It is a guaranteed acceptance not just guaranteed interview. UKMC do not require MCAT which is a plus.

I have mixed feelings about this. Every medical school student will be taking tons of high stakes exams…for years. Exams that they must pass or do well on. I’m not sure skipping the MCAT is a good idea…it is the first of many tests ahead…many.

That’s a gift for your student. Hofstra is pricey, and so is medical school. As long as you feel comfortable with the financing, that’s what matters.

Your kid has years of tough schooling ahead. Really, they should be choosing a place where they can see themselves being a happy student, and living…for a long time.

Hofstra offers 40k a year which makes the tuition less than 20k/year. Cost around the city is high. I do want to figure out how is the life in the program. Unfortunately no luck yet.

That is terrific…but it’s likely only for the undergrad portion of this BS MD program. And you mention tuition…what about room and board costs? Check yourself, but in most cases, once the student reaches the medical school portion, the undergrad financial aid goes away.

Medical school…$100,000 a year…

what is your cost for UMKC?

It is a 6 year program right?

Is it very recent change? Their website still says guaranteed interview, not acceptance.

But this one requires more than passing. 80th percentile from first sitting is a high bar…

Can you post it? I didn’t see it for “guaranteed interview, not acceptance.”

@2018Summer2018

@WayOutWestMom do you know which it is for Hofstra Bs Md program?

I’m also not seeing that. It looks like if one meets the list of conditions they will matriculate into the med school without needing an interview. Of course OP’s kid can easily confirm that with the school.
