Tips and Tricks for Makeup Lovers!

I have been attempting to redo the way I apply my eyeshadow and lipstick. I’ve been watching videos and found a fun makeup artist and have started following her on Instagram. (Erica Taylor) She’s about 47, been an artist for 26 years and I think is amusing with good tips.

She mentioned that so many of us have been doing our makeup the same for decades…and it’s old. Old looking, old style, time for a change (let’s GO!) Of course, it’s what works for our own individual shape of features.

So, I thought it would be fun to start a thread of things you love, found out about, do. These are my changes.

  1. Tone down the lip shade! As we age, our lips lose collagen and fat and look much thinner. Mine are about 50% less than even 15 years ago. However, I’ve wearing the same wines, cherries, burgundy’s. Erica said it’s SO aging. And makes them look even thinner and I agree.

Erica’s Tip: put on your lipstick, then tone it down with L’Oréal #800 Nude. It actually works! Same hue, but much softer. Lips look bigger and it’s less aging. Do one swipe or more. I follow up with MAC’s Nymphette lipglass for every shade. I’m telling you…my mouth looks so much more youthful. I’ve started buying lighter shades of lipstick, also.

  1. Quit doing the cat eye liner trick if you have hooded eyes. It looses the wing and looks like a blob.

Erica’s Tip: just thicken the liner at the end, without going past the skin at the end. It gives your eye a lift. She uses L’Oréal Infallible eyeliner pencil

Oops, not finished. The pencil is not the gel or liquid liner. It has a smudged at the other end. I bought it yesterday and it’s wonderful! Glides SO easy. No pulling.

  1. This one does work. Quit lining the bottom of your eyes…or if it’s just too plain, just super, super light. It will open and lift your eyes. It works! I just put 3 or 4 small marks or so very lightly. I’ve ordered a bronze shade that I haven’t tried yet.

  2. I always use white/off white shadow on my lids. I have small somewhat hooded eyes and a makeup artist told me about 15 years ago I always have to do that. Erica says no. That’s old old school. I now have been putting a warm pink, or taupe and it actually makes my eyes larger.

Check out her videos. Well done and fun. I think she’s very talented. Give some of her tips a try.

What are yours?

I am so NOT a make up person but recently have been trying to LEARN about how to use make up to even out my skin, etc. My daughters and DIL have been helping.

One thing I learned from them (talk about old style) is they just don’t do blush, at all! Blush? What’s that?, they say! They instead use bronzer(s) for color and highlighting contour on their face. I admit to still liking that bit of a rosy cheek!

Will read this thread with interest.

Erica talks a lot about bronzer and blush and does both. She shows the old way and new way to apply. I don’t do bronzer, I’ve never tried. It just looks so dark. I try to find the color of my natural blush and use that to give my face some color. I try to place it the new way.

Some people are just not makeup people. But a little does enhance one’s appearance. Angie Hot and Flashy does so light natural makeup videos.
Oh…”IT” Mascara Blow out in the gray and lime tube. Your lashes will never look so long. Ulta.

I have gone to Sephora a few times and had my makeup done. The great thing is that they use products from multiple lines, don’t get commissions on this and will give you the product information ( brands/names/colors etc).

I will caution that I have better and worse experiences. Also it was free but you agree to spend $50 (pretty easy to do).

I don’t wear much makeup now that I am retired, but I like it when I go out.

I think I need to update the foundation I use (when I wear makeup).

Does anyone have any tips for best foundations for us who are over 60?

Bronzer looks really dark when first applied but the trick is really blending it big time with a big fluffy brush. The contouring really makes a difference.

I’m in love with this. No need to color match, built in spf and feels like skin care rather than make up. At first, I didn’t love it because I was using it so sparingly, like I would foundation. The trick is to apply it generously like sun screen. I tend to use drugstore cosmetics there days, so the price seems high, but it’s a huge bottle and lasts a long time.

I use a tinted moisturizer. Mine is Clinique but many brands make these. A LOT less “thick” than a regular foundation. It’s actually IN the skin care section at Sephora.

I wonder if you can put tinted moisturizer under a tinted mineral sunscreen?

Interesting that this is for all skin tones - does it give you some “color” - or just fade in like any lotion?

I hate having to buy different stuff for warm weather months than cold weather months because my skin tone/color changes so much (I tan easily, even with sunscreen)

Has anyone tried Bobbi Brown’s Jones Road line? This really appeals to me as it’s targeted to our aging faces by someone who knows. I’m trying to find out how to do a trial before buying. I’ve always worn nudes/taupes/pinks and opt for subtlety. This makeup looks like it makes your skin glow with just the right amount of color.

"Jones Road is for anyone who loves a natural, luminescent look that makes you look like yourself on your very best day,” Brown says.

Generally, though, I like creamy full-coverage foundation for the face-feel. I ended up using Estee Lauder Double Wear for our son’s wedding and liked it for durability, but found it too dry/matte. I used up the rest of the bottle by mixing it with moisturizer, but I’m now looking for something more dewy, so I’m interested to know if anyone has tried the Jones Road products.

I think you would put it over it. I usually do sunscreen under foundation and I would treat this as foundation. I’m sure if you went to their website they would have application instructions.

I have very fair skin but it is hard to color match due to undertones. I find this blends right in. You can not see any demarcation lines like you would if you got your foundation color wrong, but I’m not sure how it would work on other tones.

Have you read the reviews? They scared me off.

I’ve read a lot of reviews but none that were scary. What specifically have you read that was offputting?

A lot of people mentioned it felt waxy or sticky, which I kind of figured since it’s a balm. All I can think of is rubbing Chapstick on my face. Some people would love that as they like the barrier feel, but it would drive me nuts. I like to feel like there is nothing on my face. (I have well balanced skin and don’t deal with dry spots, so it just seems like it’s not going to be my thing).

I got some clinique products from when they did my makeup for S’s October wedding. I will try using them in the near future. It had a nice light product that had a tint matching my skin tone that had SPF protection. If one didn’t think it provided enough protection, I think you’d wear sunscreen under it.

They also had eyebrow powder and my sister just bought eyebrow liquid that had a brush similar to a small mascara brush. She also bought clinique.

I really like Jones Road Miracle Balm by Bobbi Brown. I’ve been using it for the last year or so. The Miracle Balm is perfect for me because it’ doesn’t look like I’m wearing makeup (gives you a subtle glow) nor does it accentuate wrinkles. Someone mentioned above that it might be akin to putting Chapstick on your face. It’s not sticky like that. It goes on smoothly. You need to follow directions. I also use Super Goop Mineral Sunscreen (SPF 30) underneath.

I have tried the Jones Road mascara and I don’t care for it. I like Thrive mascara (Liquid Lash Extensions) and also the Trish McEvoy High Volume Tubing mascara. I use an eye drop medication that includes an ingredient that stimulates eyelash growth. I think it’s got the same ingredient as Latisse, as a result I have better eyelashes now than when I was young.

@ChoatieMom - I wear the Jones Road Miracle Balm in Dusty Rose (my skin tone is light/medium with yellow undertones).

No idea what the scary reviews are.

I like the Thrive Instant Brow fix.

Glad to hear that although I am not put off by a makeup that feels balm-y or a bit sticky if it appears dewy and doesn’t settle into lines. My skin is so dry, applying chapstick seems like a good idea.

Ok, I’m going to try the miracle balm. Thanks.

I started using this years ago and feel it covers what I want it to: EltaMD UV Daily Tinted Sunscreen with Zinc Oxide, SPF 40 Face Sunscreen Moisturizer
