Tips and Tricks for Makeup Lovers!

Interesting…when does the visit go from asking for suggestions to having a “makeover”?! (not looking for an answer but just a statement!) I guess a “makeover” is scheduled???

FYI, It Cosmetics is currently having a Mother’s Day sale that is buy one get one free. I doubt it’s for all their products, but it did look like the things I use (CC+ cream foundation and the under eye concealer) are part of the sale. For a lighter foundation, I also like their “Your skin but better” option.
I have some issues with redness and I’ve been wanting to try their “Bye bye redness” color-correcting cream, but not sure if I really need it since their foundations work for me.

I know this thread is about makeup but there are also some great YouTube videos about how to look better without makeup, I learned about using facial massage, using Vaseline to define my brows & lashes, and this was a big one for me - exfoliating my lips. They’re actually pink again when I use lip exfoliator!
Someone mentioned brow help above - I use an urban decay brow powder with a small brush. It lasts, looks natural, no hard lines.

Ah the benefit of having a live in lighting designer who knows what kinds of lights to put where. And folks…it’s all about the type of lamps (bulbs) you use. Even the best placed lights can screw up if the bulb isn’t the right kind. I keep the specs in my wallet…so I won’t forget!

I went to Ulta today and tried the Too Faced foundation. It’s nice, but still just made it feel like I put a blank palette on my face. It didn’t look like I had real skin, if that makes sense. It’s too perfect in a way, like one, like one could tell I had foundation on. I think I just need a tinted moisturizer. I’m going to try the L’Oréal BB cream I bought. It seems lighter, thinner. I don’t feel covered up.

What always confuses me are eye shadow palettes. I never know how to wear those 6-12 colors. I always shy away from them as they are pricey. I think that’s where I could use some help.

I use this tinted sunscreen from Supergoop. It’s very sheer and has a subtle glow. I stopped using foundation. It doesn’t work for me.

I want to try this…although I am happy with the Clinique one…

Agree conmama - while I wear foundation for pictures - I just don’t feel comfortable wearing it every day. Much prefer tinted sunscreen (and may check out tinted moisturizer).

Joining in to add that I still periodically use Jane Iredale pressed foundation that I use a flocked sponge to apply then spray setting lotion (also Jane Iredale) to make it more fresh looking.

I also have Jane Iredale liquid foundation but…I’ve stopped using it bc one I don’t really like wearing makeup much anymore….and it isn’t going on as well as it used to when I first started using it years ago.

I like Obagi tinted sunscreen. Gives me some color and easy to apply.

I’ve never worn foundation. But using a tinted sunscreen might be good since we have so much sunshine here - thanks for the feedback posts. I have some facial sunscreen that I use for running, but something lighter would be nice other times.

I have a secret for eye puffiness/bags that I will share from a stage professional — hemorrhoid cream. The vasoconstrictor in either ointment or gel (if you don’t want greasiness) works better than any of the expensive brands like Peter Thomas Roth that flake when hit with moisture. So, tuck a tube of Preparation H in your makeup kit to reduce or eliminate eye puffiness.

I love her tips for a couple of reasons: (1) she emphasizes skin care, which I think is more important that what you put on top of your skin and (2) she is the first person who told me I don’t need eyeliner. I know the young kids say eye shadow is out, but not for me! Also, sorry, Nikki, but you don’t need a brush!

Tell me about how you exfoliate your lips, please.

Be careful doing this. The outer layer of your lips is what keeps moisture in. Exfoliating gets rid of this and your lips will feel dry all the time. I had to stop and now I’m back to normal.

All good things in moderation. I use Sugar Lip Scrub Exfoliator. I just looked it up online, it says you can use 2-3 times per week but I would never! I do it once a month or less, when I do a facial. It has made me more cognizant though, of even just running a washcloth over my lips each morning to freshen them up.

My lips can get pretty bad. I’ve tried everything including an expensive SkinCeuticals Antioxidant Lip Repair. It helps some but I still have days my lips aren’t great.

I love Supergood Glowscreen as well. Nice texture. It’s a small bottle but I use it everyday and it lasts a long time. I probably buy 2/year. I often use Clinque CC or BB cream over it in some key areas; undereyes, nose, chin. Thanks for all the great ideas, everyone!

For repair for sore or dry lips I use pure shea butter. Not a blend of any kind. I get it at Whole Foods, but you can get it elsewhere. I now just out a tiny but each night after I wash my face.

@elena13: I use the It Cosmetics Bye Bye Redness cream and it works very well for me. I have redness/rosacia and this cream covers it up nicely. I had been having a hard time finding a product that actually worked well for me and was happy to have discovered this product.

@conmama: I agree with you about the eye shadow palettes I have no idea how to best mix and match the colors. That is why I like the Glossier monochrome trio palettes that the You Tube person Erica Taylor showcased–it makes it super easy to use. There is one matte color and two shimmer colors in each palette–so if you do not like shimmer colors you may not like that. I wear shimmer colors all the time and I have am so happy to have discovered these palettes because they have taken me out of my comfort zone in that I have been experimenting with different color palettes. Plus the way Erica applies the shadow is so simple and quick. I plan on buying more of these palette trios to experiment. I bought the Almond palette first and I love that one and today I am going to try the Jute color one.

I also wanted to say thank you conmama for this thread–I have learned a lot and this thread has given me the momentum to rethink my make-up routine.
