Tips and Tricks for Makeup Lovers!

I can’t use Retin A at all, Retinol is much weaker, but still affects me. I have very sensitive skin and pretty much can’t use anything without some kind of inflammation. Dermatologist did say the Neutrogena hyaluronic gel was a good moisturizer that likely would not cause too many issues. It does not but I still haven’t found an anti-aging cream that works and she doesn’t think it’s necessary to have one. She did give me that vermectin cream for my rosacea and it also swelled my eyes shut - pea size usage not close to eyes. My skin just does not like anything and I can hardly wear any jewelry except platinum or some hypo-allergenic.

The anti-aging cream I am really liking right now is Caudalie Premier Cru La Creme Riche. I use it most nights (I use the Retin-A twice a week underneath) and some mornings. Other than a deep brow crease, I don’t have many lines or wrinkles, but am in my mid 50’s and my skin has definitely changed since menopause, with less elasticity and more dullness, and this rich cream seems to be helping plump and soften the lines I do have and overall just make my skin feel better. I’m considering trying the serum next, even though it’s pricy.

three of three - since Retinol is weaker than Rentin A I am wondering if you might be reacting to some other ingredient in the Neutrogena product? Maybe consider trying another brand, using a sparing, supplement with moisturizer product?

I use Cerave night moisturizer to dilute my Retin A. Seems to be pretty good and widely recommended…

Thanks! I’ll try that - I do use Cerave as a face wash so I’ll try it with another product.

I use Cerave for both day (spf 30) and night. I’ve used very expensive moisturizer too, but Cerave seems fine.

Anyone use Peter Thomas Roth peptide 21 wrinkle resist serum? Any thoughts? Compared to the Sunday Riley product?

I want to see pictures of people’s make up/skin care drawers/shelves/cupboards. How much make up goes to waste?

Not a judgement at all, but as someone who is very minimal in this department and who tends to stick with one thing, I’m :hushed: at the thought of how much stuff people have - used or unused!

I try really hard not to buy and waste stuff, and I am also a minimalist.
When my son got married I decided I should use foundation, but I knew I would not wear it much, ever. The Clinique lady was kind enough to give me a sample that was good for something like 10 days, so I didn’t have to buy the foundation. I did buy a waterproof mascara (that I probably only wore two or three times before throwing it out) and maybe an eye pencil.
If I am thinking of changing products or starting a new one, I try and get a sample.
But, I am not perfect and I’m sure I’ve wasted plenty over the years.

I’m sure most of us do waste some beauty products - be it hair or skin or face!

I’m a minimalist also. All of my daily makeup fits in a compartmented lucite tray. I have three small organizer bins under my bathroom sink for the stuff I don’t use every day. My problem is I keep things too long. I probably have eye pencils from the Carter administration but, hey, if they still work…

I am on Reddit’s skincare forums and thank you for saying this. When people post their “hauls” or “shelves,” I have gasped on occasion. There is just so.much.stuff.

I admit that I have a foundation that I swatch-sampled in the store but did not ask for a sample to take home and use and it sits unused. I feel really bad because it is a waste. Also, see my Big Brush post from awhile back.

Otherwise, I have a strict one out, one in policy. I can’t buy the Laneige toner I have my eye on until my Fenty one is gone.

This is a great policy. Keeps life uncluttered (and marriage monogamous).

This question comes up from time to time. All of the people who don’t spend money on a certain item will post that they don’t have much, that they drive their cars forever, that they don’t ever go to Starbucks or go out to eat. Or eat fast food. Or buy clothes. You get my drift.

I’m not a huge fan of this line of questioning.

I have lots of makeup. I like makeup. Not everything you buy works. Should I return more to Sephora? Probably, but the nearest Sephora is 100 miles away. I also try to toss after a year. And I buy at ulta’s half yearly sale, so I can try new products at 1/2 price.

I’m not hurting anyone. I’m not going into debt.

I worry about waste…. money and “landfill” concerns. Wish could find a place to donate shampoo I tried but don’t like. (Makeup giveaway would be handy too, but there would be hygiene concerns.)

Life is much more fun for me when I engage in some retail therapy like purchasing skincare products, clothes, vacations, household gadgets, meals…etc. This is part of my spice of life.

I’m a minimalist when it comes to quantity but not when it comes to price! Chanel and Sisley are $$$. I religiously toss anything that is over 6 months old or so and buy a new $$$et even though I’ve used it only a few times. I like to look at makeup… and browse different products but I am just very lazy to use it on a daily basis. Love reading this thread!

This is such a good point.

I did not mean to diss anyone with their beauty product needs/desires. As a very low consumer of these products I do love hearing all the tips and tricks but also it is mind boggling to me to understand where to start, what to buy or not, budgeting for it , etc.

On the other hand if you saw my snack cupboard you would see my priorities can rival a convenience store

But I do like this point about waste and maybe options for donations.

Keep the tips and tricks coming.

These would be a welcome “give” on my commu ity’s FB Buy Nothing page.

I’m a minimalist re: makeup, clothes and lots of other things.

That said if someone likes something I have no problem with them not being minimalist. If it brings you joy and you aren’t asking me to pay for it or store it at my house- go for it!

Plus one!

I’m definitely not a minimalist when it comes to shoes… :high_heel:
