Aniruddh-I never had 600 posts! I’ve only been here since the end of October haha.
Oh Shakespeare. You know a writer is good when his plays written 388 years ago sound uncannily like a teenage romance novel (We’re doing Othello btw. I wish we did Macbeth, he is SO evil it’s amazing).
Meghna-I’m sorry about your situation :frowning: You should definitely email the colleges you’re looking at and ask them for a fee waiver. Some colleges have a no fees when you apply online (e.g. Wellesley). And try explaining to your mom that ranking isn’t everything, a good fit for you as a person is the primary goal. Harvard may be ranked number 1 in practically every college list ever, but there are still people who turn down their offer of admission (only a handful, but that’s a different subject). I hope you can make her understand.
Serious respect for anyone doing IIT prep btw. I would probably go in one class and forget my name and all my language skills by the time I walk out.

Arun, when are you submitting apps?

Well my personal statement is due toms. I’ll send it to my advisor today. I’ll send my entire Middlebury App on Monday, since its supplement is due on 15th Dec. I have to work on my other supplements right now, and although my earliest deadline in Dec 31st for Yale, I have exams next week and I’m spending most of my time studying for those since they are the last time our teachers tweak our predicted grades and they are a huge part of our GPA. On top of that, I have the SAT 2s this weekend and the ACT the next weekend. I will prob drop dead by the time 16th December (when my exams end) comes around.

That sounds hectic. Hang in there! It’ll all be worth it in the end :)

Sorry guys, but I HAD to post this here. [YouTube - Spiderman spiderman, tune churaya mere dil ka chaen](<a href=“eespiderman eespiderman, tune churaya mere dil ka chaen - YouTube”>eespiderman eespiderman, tune churaya mere dil ka chaen - YouTube)

Lol…that one was funny…the vid. God some people are so stupid, making such stuff. lol XD

Now that I understand what kota type is, I find plucker’s comment that these people will feel out of place at an ivy school somewhat condescending.

Funny part is that he was responding to ani’s post regarding SAT scores and tuition …

Arunemo, my exams end the 15th! And then I have a masquerade ball the day after. :)

Shoot me already. This next 3 weeks will be hell.

Masquerade…what?

google is THE answer to everything except for “kota type”. ;)

^^^bubble bubble- It must be hell for seniors in your school having to study with Early Results out Dec 15.

Tipputoppy- It’s not an actual word, nor is it a freq used slang. This was the first time I heard that word.

This gives a little idea of what goes on at Bansal Tutorial, Kota.
[What they really teach you at Bansal classes???](http://www.goiit.com/posts/list/community-shelf-what-they-really-teach-you-at-bansal-classes-919951.htm)

No, wait. This is better.

in IIT coaching, Teachers keep getting “bought” by institutes, meaning they keep shifting institues whichever gives a better pay packet. Good teachers are the most transitory. I remember this year, all of Narayana’s teachers were bought by Pie Education which is back in running. Damn, the Kalu Sarai Pie now has mindblowing teachers- the very highly reputed ones. Then the HOD Math of my coaching who taught the Toppers Batch (Yeah, we have these names in every coaching) was ‘bought’ by FIITJEE. He was really high flown. I could get what he said only if I really concentrated.
FIITJEE pays a huge amount to each teacher. They pay according to the teacher’s repute and popluarity.
It’s a money game.

I detest these new JEE teachers who recently graduated from IIT

SO full of themselves, arrogant, etc. Pssh.

But there’s this old JEE teacher still mentors me and he’s like dude IIT is definitely not the place to be in fact it’s 10000000 times better if you go to the USA since it’s better in terms of everything except cost but if you can take care of that then it’s an ideal situation of sorts…

Guess that’s what motivated me to stop coaching sometime in August.

Not that I used to top there :stuck_out_tongue: I had spent like 5-7 hours on this one Irodov sum once. That book is brutal.

My dad’s IIT batch mate teaches at Bansal’s and apparently earns Rs 1 crore per annum

Wait…WHAT!!! 1 Crore!!!

Hey…can any1 tell me what are my chances in Hamilton?

True. IIT-JEE coaching is highly lucrative, if you are good at what you do. I myself go to one of my city’s best coaching centers. Each batch usually has about 300 students. The entire lecture is transmitted via video conferencing and shown to another 300 students in a village-town 350 kms from my city.
There are 3 batches each of 11th and 12th. 6 Batches in all. 600 Students per batch. They charge about 30K from each student.
You do the maths.

I, personally, am not in favour of these mammoth chains of coaching centers. Nearly 90% of the kids just sit there and plays games on their mobile phones. It’s only the 10% of the kids that make it to the IITs and the name of the coaching centers continues to reign. In fact, I am in favour of Kapil Sibal’s ideology which entails the banning of coaching centers. A more holistic approach to IIT-JEE should be included within our CBSE curriculum.
Most of all, I regret not going to school for the last two years. I just went to take my exams, that’s it. EVERYONE in my city who takes up non-med is expected to do the same. This is just sad because 11th and 12th are the funnest, bestest high school years of your life, and spending them at those suffocating coaching centers where it’s impossible to catch a breath, is just sad. :|

CBSE teachers wouldn’t be able to manage coaching syllabus. They can hardly finish the board syllabus. Kapil Sibal keeps spouting nonsense.

They shouldn’t be going anyway.

There’s always a way out if you’re willing to search for it. I had great friends in coaching, and they were all serious IIT aspirants but the element of fun did exist. They’re also kids, not robots. Of course, since serious IIT aspirants are not supposed to have a life, it was less “fun”, but then you can’t have everything. To get into IIT, you have to make sacrifices. Nitin Jain(rank 1 IIT) didn’t watch a movie for two years. He did play mobile games during breaks though. :p

Aniruddh- I’m ahead of you here :stuck_out_tongue:

Read and weep. :stuck_out_tongue:
Gosh, did I really post that much last week? I’m glad I’m rid of my CC addiction to an extent now!

^^^ :open_mouth: 1 crore! Man, I wanna become an iit prep teacher. hehehe.

Wow, I’m surprised that pixie found it necessary to pick up a loose term from guitarclassical’s otherwise very well-written post. I mean he did not say anything demeaning about IITs or people who do IIT-prep, at all.

As to whether the Kota kids would feel at home at an Ivy League university or not, that is an unanswerable thing, because individuals can’t just judged by stereotypes. One would imagine though, that people who have not had proper schooling may not fit the college community well.

And I completely support Kapil Sibal’s ideas.

Then change the syllabus, duh. Or better still, leave the students alone to study on their own.
