To The Ladies: How Do You Wear Your Leggings?

I wear both loose and tight fitting tops - but I am tiny and thin, so. Tush always covered unless I am wearing shorter yoga pants with a tank top.

Okay. I’m going for it.

I’m over 60 and probably dress too young, but I’m small and can get away with it, usually. Love leggings and longer sweaters or dresses. I am probably personally responsible for a lot of Lululemon’s financial success.

I’m very long-waisted so tops and dresses are always inches shorter on me. Plus I’m 5’8" and a little heavier than I would like. After watching somebody my size walk down the mall in a tunic top and leggings a couple of years ago I vowed not to revisit that bit of 80s fashion. Fabrics are thinner now. Tops ride up. Leggings are stretched to their thinnest point right across the rear and become pretty translucent…it was an eye-opener!
Plus I live in Texas. Keeping my legs warm is a 2 month problem…keeping cool is more important. YMMV…

MOfWC, BB and her offspring are responsible for the other half of Lululemon’s financial success. ;)

I don’t think you should ever see the backside when wearing leggings. Even on a skinny 20 year old. It’s just TMI, in my opinion. Unless you’re going to yoga class.

I am 57, short and small. One of my uniforms in my 40s was an over-sized a-line knee length dress over leggings: either ankle length or capri. Usually I wore them with a very cropped vest or sweater. I wear a lot of layers. I like to be covered up and avoid body hugging clothes. I am deliberately dressing the opposite of what some might consider figure flattering, though I find traditional Chinese or Japanese dress figure flattering. Like bevhills, I’ve done the legging/top look several times in my life. I think I’m done with it. Sometimes I wear knee-length dresses, shirts, or sweaters over loose cropped pants. Most days I wear a collared, buttoned down the front, long-sleeved, ankle length dress with a waist line. I have the same dress in cotton, linen, wool, velvet. In the summer I roll up my sleeves. In the winter I wear leggings under my dresses. It is rare I don’t have on a sweater: cotton in summer, wool in winter. As I age, I’m limiting/streamlining my uniform: the exact same outfit all year, just different fabrics depending on temperature.

I very much like the lululemon look. I think it can be appropriate for a woman any age. I can enjoy a whole lot of looks. At this point I’ve just chosen the one that feels right for me. I don’t have to worry about dressing for an office.

Leggings aren’t a good look for me at all. I’m 48, average height, but long torso and short legs. I tried wearing them with a dress earlier this summer and my coworkers told me that the 80s were calling and they wanted their leggings back. I think that was my cue.

adding: LOVE the south street linen site. Thanks for posting.

Those who like that look might also want to check out Blue Fish/Barclay & Cynthia Ashby. Also Rundholz, but European not USA made

sorry none are within the OPs request for choices under $100 :(

I’ll bite. I do wear leggings. Back when leggings were popular a long time ago, I wore matching tunic type tops (just gave these all away). However, now I tend not to wear long tunic tops. Instead, I like leggings (full length or capri) with tunic (shorter) dresses, typically knits. It makes pulling off a shorter dress easier as the legs are not bare, or else it is also a good style when the weather turns colder.

One place where I have found shorter dresses (referred to as “tunics” on their site) is Boden. I have a number of these. Yes, many go over the OP’s $100 limit, but they often run sales and so can be had for less. I agree with the suggestion of Athleta or Title Nine as well.

I find it can be tricky with the shoes. In warm weather, sandals and flats work great with leggings or capris under short dresses. That’s really too bare for the colder climate. I have to figure out how to wear it in winter…maybe short boots with the leggings? I used to be against short ankle boots with dresses and skirts and only wore those under pants, but my D and her crowd wear short boots with dresses all the time and I might get used to it.

Also, if you don’t think you want to wear leggings, another alternative for a similar slim pant look (not under a dress though) are skinny ponte knit type pants, which are a little thicker than true leggings.

Around the house, I wear leggings a lot with tops, but don’t wear that sort of look outside the house. But I do wear them with tunic dresses in public.

Here is a link to the current tunic dresses at Boden:

From this collection, I have the Smocked Shoulder Tunic in the dark grey print, which costs $88 and come to think of it, I bought it on sale and so it cost me less. I have worn it so far with capri leggings meant for yoga. I am not sure what I would wear in winter on my feet though.

I would think this would work in the OP’s office and is priced OK.

I just checked out Athleta (which I have ordered from before for myself and one of my daughters). Some good dress options there to wear with leggings…

I like:

$128

I’m considering this one from Sundance:

$88

abasket…

I paid $88 for this tunic dress from Boden in the pewter print and it is now on sale for $26!!!: (comes in other colored prints and in solid black)

I like the Athleta dresses! The best thing is, unlike Boden, there’s a store nearby so I can try them on.

Lots of nice tunics which would go perfectly over leggings here:-
[Cupio Sharkebite Hem Tunic | Dillards.com](<a href=“Access Denied”>Access Denied)

I wouldn’t wear leggings in an office setting where suits are the norm but definitely in a casual work environment and to go out and about. I am 56

I like the Serendipity dress, it even looks good with leggings!

I love that sharkebite tunic referenced by justforthis, but it may be more casual than what abasket wants. We’re seeing how you can create all kinds of looks with a basic pair of leggings.

EPTR, I’m freshly 54. :)

Here’s the thing IMO. Are you dressed w/leggings like you are lounging after work at home? Then not appropriate for work. Are you dressed w/leggings like you are going to exercise?? Then it’s not appropriate for the office. What I would wear them would most likely be a dress that is a couple inches above the knee - so that is not out of line even without leg coverings. Also the leggings I would choose to wear would be similar to tights. Would also be flat, not shiny.

Yesterday I called our local Eddie Bauer to see if they had the leggings I was interested in stock - they did not, but the salesperson on the phone was trying to talk me into these - sort of a step up from leggings but more like a pant - she said she had a pair and loved them - the side zipper didn’t appeal to me and I really wanted more of a legging/tights look:

[Ponte Skinny Pants | Eddie Bauer](<a href=“Page Not Found”>Page Not Found)

Sooz, you speak my language and YES those looks are much what I am looking for! I also love the Serendipity - will have to look into these further on my lunch break… thank you!

Because I’ve witnessed too many cases of “legging abuse”, I find it impossible to wear them, though they would work just fine on my body type.

All leggings should come with this statement attached: “Leggings are NOT pants”.

abasket, I do not feel any warm fuzzies about the EB pants…

Here is a picture of the famous Wunder Under Lulu leggings:

[wunder under pant | women’s pants | lululemon athletica](http://shop.lululemon.com/products/clothes-accessories/pants-yoga/Wunder-Under-Pant-31552?cc=11620&skuId=3516014&catId=pants-yoga)

I have a cropped version of them. Leggings and yoga pants can be uncomfortable after a couple of hours, but these feel like wearing a second skin. The waistband is very comfy and smoothes out any belly “issues” a la Spanx but without “sausage casing” effects.
