To The Ladies: How Do You Wear Your Leggings?

Unfortunately they are out of most sizes, but my favorite is this year addition: luxtreme wunder under crop:

[wunder under crop *luxtreme | lululemon athletica](http://shop.lululemon.com/products/clothes-accessories/crops-yoga/Wunder-Under-Crop-IPLUX?cc=0001&skuId=3513393&catId=women-crops)

I hope that it becomes their core item, so that I can buy more colors. I own two black pairs right now (just in case it does not become a core item and I cannot buy it later).

P.S. Tim Gunn hates leggings (for those of you who are PR fans).

I wear two types of leggings. I’m sure I’ll get plenty of boos here but I’m 46 and far past the point where it has to pass anyone’s test but my own…and my DH’s. I guess if one of my best GFs said “Dear God, what were you thinking, I might reevaluate”, but that’s about it.

I’m a huge fan of athleta and title9. I like the athleta finesse leggings which I order a size larger so they stay very opaque (no white knees when I bend). They are good quality and decent price. At 5’6" I thought I’d need the tall by the description. The regular length comes clear to my ankles.

[Privacy Policy | Athleta](Athleta)

On the model they look pretty low waisted. I’m fairly low waisted as it is and mine sit right under my belly button, but again I size up. I always keep my rear-end exceptional well covered with these. I have a favorite jumper that I throw on with boots and a long sleeved t. Athleta is bad about loosing length with smaller sizes (I need an XXS). The tall stops at size small (I have written them about this). There’s no way I’d wear this jumper without the leggings. The model in the ski lodge must be very tall and is wearing this jumper very snug. Mine hangs as a true jumper would, with some swing to it.

[Hot When You’re Not Dress | Athleta](Athleta)

I also have two athleta ‘blizzard’ skirts (black, asphalt) that I pair with matching leggings. I like the monochromatic look. I wear them with long sleeved t’s and several really cute sweaters from title9. My favorites are the lightweight washable wool.

[Athleta Asphalt Blizzard Thermal Tech Moisture Wick Skirt Size XSmall | eBay](http://www.ebay.com/itm/Athleta-Asphalt-Blizzard-Thermal-Tech-Moisture-Wick-Skirt-NWT-Size-XSmall-/390661819324?pt=US_CSA_WC_Skirts&hash=item5af5424bbc)

My other legging-style pants are what’s going to get some push-back, but that’s okay. I have two pairs (black and navy) of the JCrew Pixie pant. They are made from the heavier ponte knit, but are definitely the legging, close cut fit. I have a very, very hard time finding any pant that fits. Most stores do not carry sizes that are an option for me (eddie bauer, jjill, etc.). Generally the smallest size in JCrew will fit me. So if I wear this style pant with a top that doesn’t completely cover my rear I’m not going to get excited over it. These are casual pants, not for an office setting. I wear them with a number of tops, crisp white blouses, sweaters, sailor inspired striped t’s, etc. Depending on the weather either flats/sperrys or boots.

The most truthful comment I have ever read about leggings was from the earlier Oprah link

absasket - I LOVE ponte knit. Those look like a nice compromise for my 55 year old, 5’10 frame.

I was at the zoo last week and was walking behind a group of middle school girls. They each had on patterned leggings with a waist length top/short sweater. I must say that I was bothered that the school and their parents allow them to go to school/wander in public wearing what looked light tights.

It’s better than the sweatpants and shorts with writing across the back…

I used to wear leggings when the matching, painted sweatshirt outfits were in style, but I am not really a fan of the look, today. When they are worn, I agree with the above Oprah link that it should be in the same way you’d wear tights. Personally, I would rather wear tights with boots instead of leggings with a dress.

I also think mid thigh is the shortest the top should be, an inch or two above the knee for women who would or should not ordinarily go that short. With dark leggings, I think you can get away with going maybe a drop shorter than that. I do think people have gotten carried away with leggings because of the whole yoga trend.

Anything that looks as if the person put on a top and forgot to put on pants is a fashion no-no, IMO.

But leggings in the 80’sor 90’s is different than leggings in 2013!!! Fashion comes and goes but it also alters along the way to still be trendy, right??

Oh, I agree that they are worn differently now - I’m still not really a fan, though, even when they are worn appropriately. I think it’s because I don’t like the interrupted look of them, and I tend to prefer more fitted and tailored tops to tunic tops.

Blueiguana; I have those J Crew pixie pants! Didn’t realize the name, again, bought at some outlet, until I saw the zipper at the back. They are sooo comfortable and a bit slimming, but I was teased mercilessly when my daughters saw the back zipper. I agree with someone else who said that the tops have to be long enough, mid-thigh at least, otherwise, I feel, well, a bit too exposed. And yes, I wear desert boots with my leggings.

abasket, as I wrote, I don’t wear leggings with long tops, like I did back in the '80s. But I think they look nice with short dresses that are sort of tunic dresses that are above the knee length (could pass with bare legs in summer). So check out some of the ones I linked for you as their price may even be OK for you or keep those catalogues in mind in any case.

I like ponte knit skinny type pants and have a couple, but those are not for under a dress. They are more like pants, not leggings, and I might wear a regular sweater or top with them as with any pants.

(I’m 56)

Yes, I understood that from you Sooz, and I’m right there with you - I just don’t own or have interest in the long blousy tops. To each his own!!! Ill be manning a table at a conference all day tomorrow and will be doing some web searching through the links provided to see what I may come up with! Myself, def looking for dresses - but I’m happy to see that others had interest in this topic too - and hopefully got some ideas. :)

Did anyone notice the leggings outfit Heidi Klum was wearing last night on Project Runway? I liked it. You can see it in the upper right-hand corner of this web page:

[Project Runway The Official Site - Episodes, Videos & Schedule - myLifetime.com](http://www.mylifetime.com/shows/project-runway)

^^^

She was wearing jeggings, but I kept thinking of this discussion while watching the show.

As usual a timely thread…

I’ve had a love-hate relationship with the legging look since it became popular a few years ago. I love it when they’re worn like tights under a long tunic or short dress (with flats or boots), hate it when they’re worn like pants with a short top or high heels. Those of us with supermodel bodies can pull it off but just being thin doesn’t make it work any better (JMHO).

So, I recently decided to jump into the shallow end of the pool. I was shopping at Soma for some bras and ran into these two tops:

Both of them fall a few inches above my knee. You should have heard the ohhs and ahhs from customers in the store when I walked out of the dressing room with these tops and legging on. The black tunic is extremely soft. I’ve worn it with a cute scarf and leggings to the grocery store.

I’ve never seen anyone with leggings at work even though it’s a business causal office. In my view, this look works great for things like running errands, shopping, hanging out with friends.

I’ve seen women at the gym or out walking with leggings and a short skirt like the Althea one. I think it’s a cute look for exercise.

I like those^^^^

Will be watching Project Runway later tonight - will have to check Heidi out!!

I totally agree that leggings should be treated as if they are tights.
As for the middle school girls with short tops worn with leggings, I would say that I wore much worse in 1969. I wore the tunic top with bare legs–only back then it was called a mini dress. I recall being unable to bend over and feeling extremely uncomfortable.
So glad that the kids are, at least, covered by fabric.
I am closing in on 61.

Bunsen- That terry tunic would look cute with our Tabby Tights! :)

Momlive; I love the first one you listed from Soma…am going to order it right now.

Just curious because several of you have mentioned wearing ballet flats with your leggings (which I do like the look)… are any of you familiar with Tieks? I have several Facebook friends who have ‘liked’ Tieks, but I don’t know anyone who has bought a pair. Am wondering if they’re as comfortable, convenient and stylish as they indicate on their website.

Just looked up the Tieks. A little too “flat” for me - literally like ballet slippers. My feet/legs prefer just a tad of a heel , other wise almost TOO flat! (Cute colors though!)

I have 4 pairs of Tieks. They are every bit as wonderful as advertised. A friend got her first pair today and texted me a picture. She loves them already. They are very well made and have some cushioning. Very comfortable. Excellent customer service, too. I get asked about mine all the time. Only negative is the price.
