Toaster recommendation

I had a cheap little toaster that lasted over 30 years. It was slowing down so I upgraded to a Breville to match the espresso maker. They looked nice sitting next to each on the counter although the toaster is put in a cabinet when it is cool. After less than two years use it died.

Can anyone recommend a stainless steel toaster? We liked the count down feature on the Breville.

We do not want a toaster oven, just a simple two slice toaster.

TIA

I’d just head to Target. I saw a few stainless two slice toasters there…and they weren’t very pricey…and should work just fine. They don’t have a countdown timer… yet they do pop up when the toast is done. And they are far less pricey than the Breville.

I would write Breville and let them know that your expensive two year old toaster died. Honestly…that is awful.

I have a really old white plastic thing…that works fine after 20 or more years. I wish it would die!

I once wanted a more expensive toaster and found out it isn’t worth it. Did research and even tried a more expensive one decades ago. Uneven toasting et al. Returned.

Current toaster is a Black and Decker TR1200 model, 850 watts according to the bottom when I just checked. Just about 4-5 years old. Like it- bagel, frozen, reheat and cancel functions- push down and pops up when done. Dial with numbers 1-7. Even toasting. When old Procter Silex died I researched inexpensive toasters. Found some have far fewer watts- slower I believe. Got mine at Target (maybe Walmart). stainless steel. Of course the exact model won’t be available but similar ones should be. Can check online- eg Amazon, as well. I really like the frozen button I push after pulling down the toast lever- can keep the same setting for when bread at room temp and get same browning.

IF I were more computer adept I would send you a link…

After having a couple disappointing kitchen appliances, now I read reviews before buying this type of appliance. Amazon can work well for this kind of thing. The specific model I’d recommend depends how you are going to use it and and what features you’d like . For example, I currently own two different toasters for different situations. One has 2 extra wide slots and cooks bagels or thick frozen waffles especially well. The other has 4 slots, does better with thinner slices, and has more control/status options such as a time until finished indicator.

Toasters aren’t being built to last 20+ years anymore. In my experience two years is a pretty common run for a modern toaster. (That or I’ve just had miserably bad luck with toasters over the past decade)

I haven’t seen any correlation between price and longevity, so I just went with a $12 Oster for my most recent purchase. It’s a very pretty red since the kitchen needed a splash of color and it makes great toast and bagels. YMMV but at the price it’s hard to go wrong if you like the look (I think it also comes in stainless and black). If nothing else it’s an inexpensive temporary solution while you look for your ideal toaster.

My 20 year old white plastic one…is a Krups. I don’t think they make toasters anymore.

I would not spend a lot of money on this. Breville is an expensive brand…and nice. But as noted…these things aren’t built to last forever anymore. Heck…if the cord hadn’t failed (and couldn’t be fixed) on my old…OLD toastmaster, I’d still be using that!

Well, this would be a conversation starter:

But, seriously, I wouldn’t spend too much money on it. I have an inexpensive Cuisinart toaster courtesy of Bed Bath & Beyond’s 20% coupon that does the trick in my house - love the wide slots that toast bagels and Belgian waffles.

Costco has a couple of toasters that are reasonable in price and tend to be on the “sturdy” side - so not the $5 Proctor Silex ones (though my college kids have used those fine!). I would probably just look for a toaster that fit my budget AND fit my kitchen style - decide if you want shiny stainless steel or brushed for instance.

I’ve got this one: https://www.amazon.com/Cuisinart-CPT-160-Classic-2-Slice-Stainless/dp/B0000A1ZN0/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1513002600&sr=8-3&keywords=cuisinart+toaster+2-slice I’ve had it for years. No complaints. It replaced an ugly but cheaper white one.

I have a Breville toaster oven. It’s still going strong in its 4th or 5th year and, IMO, it makes the best toast of any toaster I ever had before.

I would contact Breville if I was the OP.

I have had an inexpensive black Sunbeam 2 slice toaster (with bagel setting) for YEARS. It was really inexpensive, and it still toasts beautifully. I have had a couple expensive toasters in the past that bit it quickly. I will only buy cheap toasters from now on! (And the way it is going, I may not even need to buy any more toasters before I bite it!)

I have the 4 slice version of the Cuisinart linked in post#8. We have had it a few years, no problems.

After a period of searching and hauling back toasters that didn’t toast we finally got a 2 slice kitchen aid that has wide slots for bagels and is still trucking along nicely after 10 years. Love that thing.

On a side note of toasters I bought some ekSel Toaster Bags from Amazon that lets you make a grilled cheese sandwich in your toaster. I use them to heat up sandwiches and left over pizza. They’re made of a slick material that is non-stick. Works great. Reuseable up to about 50 times per bag and you get 3 in a package. I bought them for about 8 bucks for the package.

(That sounds genius)

Wow, never heard of Toaster Bags but sounds like something that should get more publicity! We rarely toast anything, but I do use the toaster over to actually cook meats and vegetables.

We have a toaster oven but it isn’t out on the counter. The toaster bags work great for heating up stuff with cheese especially. Have to have wide slots if you actually want to make “grilled cheese” but I use it for heating up pizza (great!) because it “crisps” just like a toaster oven.
Toaster bags was one of those “serendipity” finds last year. Just took a chance.

I looked through numerous toaster reviews on Amazon today. It seems that people are more likely to rate toasters on looks rather than performance. I wish more reviews included pictures of toast because that was helpful.

Those toaster bags sound like something I would really like to try @gouf78 - where would I find them?

And @MaterS thanks for the thread, I am also in the market for a new toaster as my cheap Black & Decker just bit the dust. Need to replace it before the kids show up next week!

The toaster bags are on Amazon-- available from many companies. I just mentioned the company because I tried them and liked them.

I own a Dualit toaster - love it!

I have this one in a yellow that I don’t see offered here:

If anything happens to my toaster I plan to buy another one.
