Today's reminder that I'm OLD

No that I’m aware. I use keen sandles for that.

Today’s reminder–I went to the website of a lawyer who I’m going to retain to get information on sending him the retainer. There was an option included in his on-line information called a vCard. I had no clue what that was. Now I know.

I fell and broke my arm last year and the main question was “what happened?” And I realized I really didn’t know --it happened so fast and BAM!–I was down. So I went on a research mission..

Turns out they’ve actually done analyses of factors with percentage chance attached (those I cant remember). But it’s usually a combo of factors. I can’t find the site now I landed on but here’s what I remember for being the main factors:

Going from one surface to another. Your chances of falling go up every time you move from soft vs hard surface or smooth vs rough. Going from carpet to hardwood floor is a good example. Same goes for entryways–doors, exits, thresholds.

When changing direction put your foot out in the direction you want to go before making the turn. Turn your foot first not your body. Many people fail to do this and it’s something if you practice a bit with conscious effort it becomes second nature.

Not swinging your arms when you walk–your arms (bent) should swing in coordination with opposite leg. Your arms are a major factor in balance.

Posture counts. Head up, shoulders back. Do not look at the ground immediately in front of you. Focus 10-15 feet in front of you. Be aware of surroundings–use peripheral vision.

Pick your feet up. But not a march… A proper walk will start with the heel and roll all the way to ball of foot to toes. Fearful people tend to tiptoe–which increases chance of falling. (Did you know toe strength is extremely important for balance? Stand up on your toes and lean forward–your toes can keep you from falling.)

And yeah–those shoes that are padded so you “walk on air”…not good at all it turns out. You should be able to feel the ground beneath you as you walk. That’s how your body makes adjustments in balance. And your shoes should actually fit your feet–not be the oversized pillows they’ve become.

So why did I fall? I went from carpet to hardwood floor through a doorway, turning my body while looking at my phone instead of where I was going…pretty much everything on the list…

I broke my arm just before the pandemic. I was looking up an address on my phone and fell off the sidewalk curb.

I broke my nose in 2024 by falling flat on my face rushing back to jury duty after lunch. No excuse–no crack on the sidewalk, just me face down with a lot of blood pouring out, on the sidewalk.

Very appropriate username (@FallGirl) for the poster who gave your post a mended heart like.

@Publisher -I think you are responding to @oldmom4896 .

Yes, I understood that your screen name related to your favorite season; I was just injecting a bit of humor into the conversation.

@Publisher -you were not responding to my post. You were responding to a post by another poster.

I’m not clear why you are associating me with someone else’s comment. In any case it’s not funny to me when someone is injured.

H has been getting pension payments for over a decade so really old. haha! No complaints in the $$$$

I’d probably love being old a little more if I had a pension coming in - sadly, that wasn’t available to either my husband or myself….savings only but should be okay to still travel if we don’t get too sick too early.

I have no pension either but H has generously designated that I get 55% (the max possible) of his pension if I live longer than him. That really helps us have more peace of mind.

We were lucky that if only reduced H’s pension by 10% to give me the 55% survival benefit & it means we can also have subsidized medical coverage for the rest of my life.

H told me a middle aged dude with a full head of gray hair came up to him and asked if he was H. Yes. H TAUGHT him! That is old lol. Me? I’m just married to an old person right?

Age difference might be under a decade if he taught high school as a new teacher. But could be much greater if he taught kindergarten as a very experienced teacher.

He taught elementary school, but I don’t know when he taught him.

Some of my friends here went to see Brandi Carlisle in concert last night. Glad I just said cool and have fun. Because I was totally thinking she is Belinda Carlisle.

While watching the Olympics last night I was telling D and SIL about the former black French skater, Surya Bonaly. That she was such a powerful skater and faced some criticism because she wasn’t “thin and delicate” like many female skaters. I was telling them that it was some time since she skated but I was in my mind thinking - what was that, like 10-12 years ago?

I looked her up - SHE IS 52! - lol, WHAAAT? How has it been that long since she skated?! My reaction will be a joke for a LOOOONGGG time!

Officially a crazy old lady today. We don’t like the new formulation of our bath soap (don’t get me started on that newfangled shower gel stuff) and I found the original version in the dollar store. Don’t bother looking, I bought them out.

I’m hoping you didn’t pay a ton to learn they changed formula like I think happened to some fancy face stuff I was using.

My D has been helping her FIL, who owns a small retail business, cleanup an office that has tons of old files from the previous owner. As we were going through file cabinets, desk drawers, etc. she found several of those pink “While You Were Away” message pads. Neither D (who is 35) nor another gal who was helping (she’s a recent college grad) had clue what one did with these pink message pads!! I felt old.
