I text with my only my right thumb - my left hand holds the phone and I still text relatively fast. I have never been able to use both thumbs and I too type approx 100 wpm.
I’m thinking I started a thing against Skechers. Honestly, I don’t think it was the shoes - they’ve never given me an issue before. I feel like it was me not lifting my foot high enough. Is that a normal way that old people fall? Not balance, but judgement, depth perception, something along those lines? Poor Skechers, we’ve raked them over the coals and I probably shouldn’t even have brought up the name of the shoe, I just wanted folks to know I wasn’t in my slippers or some odd ball shoe.
A number of years ago, I broke my ankle falling off my slippers. It was late at night and I think my foot/feet had fallen asleep at the computer. I started walking down the hall in my flat slip on slippers and the next thing I knew, I was on the floor with one ankle at a very odd angle. Husband was out of town and I was upstairs. It was a fun time getting downstairs and calling 911.
I had broken both the tibia and fibula and ended up with a plate on one side and pins on the other, removed a year later. My other ankle was sprained. It was an interesting three months!
I got tired of telling people how it happened and started saying I had broken it crewing in the Mac. (The famous Chicago-Mackinac Island sailboat race had just taken place.)
I like your response to the “how’d that happen?”
But you helped identify a problem. I don’t seem to trip in other shoes….
It’s good not to get up too quickly from bed to go to the bathroom or walk around. My mom will sit for a minute before she gets up from the bed. She knows too many people who have fallen on their way to the bathroom at night. I guess it’s a sign of old age.
When my mom fell I was told hip weakness often prevents older people from properly lifting feet.
Lower body strengthening exercises are very important as we age.
Glad to know I’m not crazy, uncoordinated or “just old”.
THIS makes sense to me as I know I am weak in my legs and walking isn’t strengthening them. I need to do more - my commitment this year.
Yes. Shuffling and not lifting the feet high enough is a common way old people fall. I used to go to PT with my elderly mom and this was a thing they worked on a lot.
That said most Skechers and many other shoes now have that white Croc-like foam sole that has very little tread. I liked the old Skechers I had but the sole became very worn down with minimal tread.
I really need to get some new sneakers/trail shoes. I like to hike a fair bit and don’t like a hiking boot anymore but I need some grippy tread. A friend has Topos hiking shoes and really likes those. I want to try them on. I like a wide toe box. My husband likes Altras for that reason and I have tried those and liked them ok but I feel like there might be something g out there I would like more.
I do have Altras, my husband calls them my clown shoes because the toe box is so wide!
If your feet have not been compressed through years of wearing narrow shoes, shoes like those may be the best at matching the shape of your feet.
I had a pair of Birkenstock boots. I loved those boots and wore them a ton. Except that I seemed to stub the front of the boots. I didn’t think too much about it.
A friend did the same. She unfortunately fell, was hurt and skinned up one side of her body. She googled and found out that here were lots of complaints on that particular style of boots. I stopped wearing the boots even though I didn’t have this issue with my other styles of Birkenstocks
I wasn’t making a thing about sketchers. I have a pair myself. I was curious and decided to post what I found. Because I thought it was interesting that this apparently is more common than you thought.
Sometimes it’s not you, it’s the shoes!
I’m so old that I remember when Indiana University’s football team was bad.
I was offended probably 10 years or more ago when I was diagnosed with osteoporosis and my doc offered me some PT sessions to work on balance. It totally makes sense but I did NOT feel at all like I was at the point of needing instruction there!
My point is, your doc may be able to prescribe you just a few sessions of time with a PT to give you some balance exercises. Especially if you have fallen, have osteo or express other concern about not being on balance all the time.
That would make you only three!
Yoga is great for improving your balance. Do tree pose on each leg a few times a day!
No osteo here, surprisingly since my mom had it…I think that check comes up again in another year or two, like every 5 years maybe? However, yes, balance can be tricky and not seem like a thing that trips you up. No issues with taking balance therapy, I can ask and she will likely give prescription if that is doable - anything at this point, because now I’m thinking about it and will probably fall because I’m focusing on falling!
Have your tried the Swype keyboard? Or maybe by now, regular standard keyboards support it? It’s basically typing without lifting your finger, you just drag it all over the keyboard. Took a while to get the hang of it but it just becomes routine-and fast. Highly recommend
Are there any lightweight Merrell shoes that are also waterproof? When I travel, I always bring two pairs—Hokas for everyday wear and my older Merrell Moabs for rainy days. Last month, I bought a pair of Gore-Tex Hokas that are lightweight and provide the support I need.
