Wow, I don’t think I’ve ever paid just $130/month, even in the late '80s.
The big airplane+ company had excellent benefits for those of us that hired in in the 1980s-‘94. It - and the pension - are the reasons we stayed for our entire careers. My husband paid somewhere around $35/month, if you can believe it. Well, my husband enjoyed designing our nation’s defense, but I simply lived program finance.
I can remember paying nothing for heath insurance - working for municipal government. You had to pick the HMO to get it free, but as a younger, healthy adult that was fine by me. This wasn’t even that long ago (ok it was almost 35 years ago but it was the 90’s which isn’t that long ago!). I don’t think I paid anything for health insurance in jobs before that either, though I honestly can’t remember. Now it’s all but unaffordable even if the employer still picks up a healthy portion (my last employer paid 75% and my share is still a healthy chunk of change).
Our health insurance costs have risen with Medicare because we now pay a premium for that for each of us plus we pay a family premium for our insurance (which serves as our MediGap). We are fortunate to have the coverage we do, so no complaints here. Our providers have mostly been quite willing to accept the payments they receive from Medicare B and/or BCBS.
My college friends said I met face to face with Gloria Steinem when I was editor in chief of the undergraduate student newspaper at Binghamton. I have zero recollection.
Every post on the Your Coolest Retro Tech Marvels thread is reminding me I’m no spring chicken.
