We are going to a reunion of folks DH worked with (and I know well) from fifty years ago. Yep…that’s when they started working at the same place.
Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run” album was released 50 years ago this coming Monday. That can’t be right. It was just yesterday that we were all blasting that album from the stereos in the dorm.
I could actually run 50 years ago!
Just circling back to say…this was so much fun. Most of the folks are now fully retired. And we met these folks in our 20’s! Great time, and terrific food!
I’m still running, although a lot slower and shorter distances. Been doing it since 1976. Might have been inspired by Bruce.
Bought something with a senior discount.
This feels like an appropriate place to put this. I had an innocuous text exchange with ds2 that left me feeling sad/old.
He is on the West Coast for his fantasy football league draft. These guys have been in a league since HS. While in college it was by Zoom, and eventually they were all employed and making enough to make it a destination thing. I texted him yesterday to say good luck with the draft, and he responded that they had drafted the night before and that he crushed it, lol. I responded why Friday night instead of Saturday and then remembered that they had plans to go to a winery for the weekend. I wrote “I can’t believe that your draft weekend includes a winery tour. I can remember when y’all drafted at a wings place before you were old enough to drink.” He sent back an lol and said “Yeah, we’ve leveled up.”
When did these boys, a half-dozen of whom I distinctly remember loading up in a van and driving to an out-of-town HS basketball playoff game, get this old??? The youngest is 29, I think. And what does that say about me? I don’t know why it felt like such a gut punch, but it did.
Have you all tried voice texting? It’s easier than typing.
In the car all the time.
Monday was the 50th Anniversary of Born to Run being released. I was ready to start 7th grade. Still one of the best albums ever!
1st year of college.
Graduated from college!! Just started grad school! You are youngsters ![]()
One of the biggest reasons (other than aid) I attended Grinnell was my hope the Boss would return. When I listen to The River, I’m back in my dorm room. When the music stops, I’m back to being over 60!
Twenty odd years ago when my kids were young I used to get together with 5 other ladies in a monthly scrapbooking group. Well, really it was an excuse to get together and drink and talk about our husbands. ![]()
Out of the blue, one of the ladies got us all together for a reunion last weekend. It was so fun! It had been 15 years since we last got together.
We laughed about our past discussions about cures for colic, choosing preschools and sports club teams to our new topics: planning weddings/dealing with future in laws, retirement, grandkids and orthopedic surgeons, cataracts and cardiologists.
I must say, we have had good lives and raised great families.
I know I’m old when I can’t understand the level of casual weed use by those my kids age. I try to remind myself that we binge drank, which I’m constantly inormed is way worse, but still…
I’m just sick of smelling it everywhere I go.
OTOH I know im old because my sense of smell is diminished to the point where it totally doesn’t bother me!
Covid concerns aside, losing our sense of smell at an old age has its advantages, b/c I’ve found that many of the senior citizens my DH gives rides to (b/c they can no longer drive) apparently have also lost their sense of smell, and they are odiferous!! We have to air the car out sometimes after they get out!
Not being able to notice when you are odiferous means that you may not notice why other people no longer want to be with or near you. That does not seem to be an advantage.
Not sure these particular guys care!
I think about posting this statement several times a day, but then figure I’d sound like a broken record. The smell is just so potent and lingers. I walked 3 miles on the trail the other day, and the it reeked the worst in the parking lot, but then several times on the trail I was just overwhelmed and there was nobody clearly smoking nearby. And don’t get me started as I smell it at 5am as the cars go by - with their windows UP!
