Top 160 High Schools in the US - did yours make the cut?

umm… . juzam… actually 300 is pretty good considering it’s the whole nation we’re talking about

yea but im so sure my school is better than 300, even if we are talking about the nation

the amount of “good” high schools in the u.s. is probably about a quarter of the total amount of high schools

so being 300 is still not as good as i would like

and 300 was only an estimate, i dont remember exactly what number it was, but it wasnt very high

My school only offers AP classes in foreign language (French/Spanish/Latin i think) Science (Chem/Bio) history (US/European i think) and math (AB/BC calc/ statistics). So thats only about 10 AP classes total. The max you see from one top student is maybe 3 AP’s in a year, maybe 6 throughout highschool. But the avg scores on the AP’s are 4’s and 5’s, rarely 3’s or lower. So i guess we concentrate better on the few we have. We dont have AP english classes or AP physics and others. Even though we’re a good private school. But its one of those small, traditional type schools that has few course choices and lots of set course tracks through highschool. Even though we are probably a much better school than alot of public schools with lots of AP’s. So i dont really know what my point is here. I have a canker sore in my mouth, and i keep pokin at it with my tongue, but thats only making it Worse!

i agree w/ ivy4me…this ranking is based on AP’s. My school doesnt offer many b/c we’re really small (350 kids in total) and we still ranked like 202 or something. The ranking method is a little biased i feel.

they don’t look at magnet/private schools

Ridiculous stuff. My school requires that everyone takes 6 out of 9 AP classes that we offer. Most graduate with 8. According to this ranking, we’d be #3 or 4 (first class to graduate was 2004), but we are nowhere in the same category as the excellent schools. Our scores are mostly 1’s and 2’s. Why don’t they do a ranking of scores, and sort them according to how many tests were taken. That would be a much better ranking, although still limited.

worst method ever, too bad it doesn’t include private high schools

Wahoo #7 Does this mean it’s easier for me to get into colleges?

you’re kidding, right

this ranking sucks. how is raleigh charter number 9??? It’s not even the best school in the area. The campus SUCKS (I’m not kidding, the buildings are really weird and cramped and there’s no cafeteria). Their average test scores are actually rather low. And they don’t offer that many APs–there’s always a dearth of students, so for example this year they didn’t offer AP Physics (or was it last year?). This ranking is clearly wrong…what on earth makes Raleigh Charter so great? They don’t have good athletics either (do they even have them?).

HA! my school definently would not make that list.

31 lincoln park high has no business on that list. it is sort of a slap in the face to other high schools in chicago that are actually worth attending.

the facility is terrible. the roof leaks. the cafeteria has roaches. there were never enough books or desks for students. the teachers could not care less. they lock the toilets and force students to go off campus to use the restroom. i am glad that this last issue is finally receiving some attention by media. it isn’t fair to expect students to “hold it” for an entire school day.
i do not like that i.b. and a.p. scores are so heavily weighted. it ignores the possibility that non a.p. and i.b. students receive a substandard education, which is definitely the case at lincoln park.
jay mathews seems very biased. lphs has not even passed n.c.l.b. laws. how could it be in the top fifty in the nation?

These rankings are absolutely mad. I mean I don’t completely agree with US News’ ranking of Universities but at least they are rough;y accurate. This rankings for high schools is mad, crazy in fact.

hmm… mine is the 48th. But it’s not one of the ones that forces student to take AP/IB classes or tests. Most students do it willingly or their parents made them.

Dude, ***!!! All those frickin’ MD schools are not nearly as good as my county’s schools. Totally bogus!!! We are the top performing district in the state and none of our schools are mentioned.

my school’s #26

29 Bethesda Chevy Chase

@joannye
that is so off topic that the ■■■■■■ are drooling

I had the option to go to Palm Harbor University, the number 83 ranked school. I turned it down because I did not want to get burned out…nor did I want the stress of an IB program that may or may not help with college admissions (since applicants are viewed based in the context of their schools).

I have been to the number 10 high school, Hillsborough, too. The students are regular people.

Many of us are familiar with a lot of these schools - coincidence or rankings with a narrow sample?

They really have got to STOP mixing selective high schools with regular high schools. Do not mix magnet schools – with actual applications and selective admissions – with your garden variety local district high schools (who have to take anyone who shows up and lives in the district). Rank magnet schools, along with TJ in Northern Virginia, with Phillips Andover and then see how good they look. Truly mixing apples and oranges and they know it, but don’t fix it. Idioten!
