Top Chef Season 21 - Wisconsin

It seems that the editing of the finale was done to make Danny’s win a surprise. The judges were much more complimentary about Dan’s dishes. Savannah clearly messed up her pasta dish. Danny’s dishes were the most chef-y looking. $300k is a lot of money. Sorry Dan did not win Fan Favorite, although Michelle was nice.

I didn’t know they did a fan Fav!

It seemed the complexity of Danny’s dishes overcame the relatively minor errors. That was not shown except for Gail making a couple of comments. Dan did not make any mistakes, except on the first course. Buddha has an article in People in which he said he thought Danny won the first and last course, Dan the second, and they tied on the third which gave Danny the win. I think that is just his opinion, not any insder knowledge but makes sense.

I just wish they’d present it as it falls and not try to “trick” the audience. Danny earns it, I’d like to see it all!

Do agree that Danny’s were overall more complex which was also true throughout the season.

According to my son, in an interview, Gail essentially blames the post-production people and said they tried to stir up too much drama. She stated that it wasn’t that close between Danny and Dan.

I don’t know where he read this, so can not confirm.

Go watch past seasons. It is a great show and while I enjoyed this season ok, I think it was actually the weakest one.

I also thought Dan won. He had no negative comments (televised) except the texture of his fish is course 1 and Emeril liked the flavor. I read an article where Tom on Twitter/X said it was an an editing issue, which I find disappointing. I am not looking for drama - just a good show.

Agree. But also its typical of the judges to sort of “defend” their choices on social media afterwards. Was it on All Stars or the regular season that Tom was kind of an “a_s” on Twitter saying that Buddha almost didn’t win or something.

There was a quote from an interview with Tom Colicchio on Pack Your Knives podcast where he stated, “We messed this one up. But the edit was messed up, not the outcome.”

Sure Tom. Always ready to throw someone under the bus….!

Just listened to the “free” portion and was interesting that Tom said that none of the diners and none of judges thought that Dan won. He said there were flaws in all of his dishes as well, but somehow those did not make into the edit. He said he doesn’t review the show but may now, at least for the finale. He said they try to give both positive and negative feedback on all of the courses to help in the edits. He didn’t throw the editors under the bus, as he said they had many hours of filming to condense and try to have a balanced judges table regarding comments, while still keeping a bit of tension as to who won.

A counterpoint to what Tom said though, is that while I suppose he may be being honest…it’s a bit of a slap in the face for Dan to have to handle now post-show. “Hey Dan, we presented the show in a way that indicated you had few flaws in your dishes, but in reality, your dishes were actually sub-par”.

I think Dan heard criticism from the judges in real time. The review of each Chef’s dishes with the judges is more detailed and goes on much longer than shown.

I was surprised that they did not do a segment on game meat or local wild caught fish (the fish boil was gross).

One of the best meals I had was at a country inn outside of Milwaukee where they prepared various game meat in traditional French preparations and sauces. When we lived in North Dakota where my dad was a PhD candidate, one of our favorite activities was to drive into Minnesota, rent a rowboat and fish for walleye. It was a cheap day out and we had a nice store of a delicious fish for the next couple of weeks. Dan used walleye a couple of times, but I think the producers missed the mark on local ingredients by only really highlighting cheese and cranberries specifically. The indigenous cuisine was interesting, but hard to relate to.

Of course he did. But the viewers saw/heard what they saw/heard on their screen. Which was 4 dishes of which 3 were toted as being pretty spot on. I think it’s a disservice to Dan post show for Tom or anyone associated with the show to basically say “actually Dan’s dishes weren’t as good as we led you to believe”. Feel free to talk up Danny’s dishes and say they were even better than portrayed but I think it’s disrespectful to announce the edit in a way that takes away from another contestant’s performance.

That’s my opinion anyway! Tom did similar during All Stars when he tweeted that if Sara had not goofed up one dish she would have been the clear winner. I feel it takes away from Buddha’s win.
