My daughter will be a senior this fall and is wanting to pursue a career as a neurosurgeon. I was wondering what are the top colleges to apply for undergraduate and then which med schools are the best. We had been looking at Duke, Michigan U, Dartmouth, Northwestern, Butler, & Stanford.

I would just go to the best school she gets into - I tend to think the undergrad focused schools (Brown, Dartmouth, Yale) and the most “grade inflation” oriented top schools (Harvard, Stanford) tend to get the most students into top med schools and also tend to give undergrads the best opportunities to distinguish themselves.

It doesn’t matter where she attends. She will have to take the required pre-med courses wherever she goes (and get good grades in those courses!). Medicine isn’t as prestige-focused as law and business.

don’t overlook some of the top LACs, which do just as good a job at med school placement as top universities

UF has a med program, how are her grades is a good question to ask too .

Rice U in Houston… top 20, undergraduate focused university with world’s largest medical center next door.

neDuke, you might have to lower your sight on colleges a bit:

Duke, Dartmouth, Northwestern and Stanford might be a bit of a reach.

What are her stats? Do you need financial aid, and what state are you in? This goes a long way toward helping you.
BTW, love Butler: a great college life combined with good solid academics.

JohnAdams12, not if URM.

No, kwu, an URM cannot get into Stanford, Dartmouth, Northwestern or Duke with an 1830 SAT.

According to another thread the stats are a 3.85 GPA and an 1830 SAT. Good question about whether financial aid is needed. OP, can you pay $50K/year for your D’s schooling?

I agree about LAC’s. There are a bunch that have good rates of getting grads into med school, but aren’t as selective as schools like Duke and Stanford. Ursinus College in Pennsylvania comes to mind.

I’ve closely followed four admission cycles of elite NYC public and private schools now.

Stanford is a stretch. Duke, Dartmouth, and Northwestern–very likely.

As long as the OP’s kid has earned that high GPA from a fairly reputable school, he/she is in good standing.

That is not to say that URMs should settle for subpar SAT scores.

neduke21-
In which state do you live?
