Top Private Day Schools

Gotham Bar and Grill is excellent.

Prepare for the bill - but IMO well worth it.

Union Square Cafe is better though.

Hopkins

Absolutely terrific matric list

bluestar7 and ivy_grad, Thanks for the input on Gotham bar and grill. By Sat night I’ll have had first hand experience.

prepparent,

the interior of gotham is what sets it apart from other places IMO - it has soaring ceilings and well spaced tables - and the food ain’t bad either :)

enjoy!

Prepparent/BlueStar7,

I think many upper-west side parents would be uncomfortable sending their kids all the way to Brooklyn, so I think Calhoun would be a reasonable alternative for those seeking a progressive education. However, I don’t think you can put them in the top echelon of NYC schools. By the way, when Dalton was founded it was considered a very progressive school, but they have become more traditional over the years. Don’t get me started about St. Ann’s. Alright, I’ll vent. They don’t have any tests or grades, only written evaluations by teachers. The whole situation seems very suspect to me.

Burntsnowman,

I agree Hopkins has excellent college admission stats. They’re mostly the kids of the Yale faculty who don’t go to Choate.

Spoonyj,

All of the the top schools in NYC match the SAt scores of Harvard-Westlake, and many surpass them.

yeah-- ptribecca, the only kids i know who went to calhoun are uws kids! i’d put st. ann’s as a “bubble” school for top echelon of nyc private schools, but definitely not calhoun. the dalton plan basically is obsolete now and my dalton friends all say that dalton even admits to it no longer being that type of progressive school.

Greenwich Country Day School, amazing!

I was wondering why their Yale matriculations were so impressive. The children of Faculty makes sense. The School is beautiful and a good day prep.

Twin Cities: probably

St. Paul Academy

and

Blake

with a couple of other contenders. Several of the prep day schools here list Andover or Exeter as “college” destinations for their graduates, which presumably means that some kids from here do post-graduate years at those schools.

“NYC: Trinity, Horace Mann, Dalton, Spence, Chapin, Collegiate, Fieldston, Regis (b/c of the application process)…”

Haha, Bluestar, as a current Regian I’m compelled to register my displeasure at the fact that Regis needs a qualifier to be listed as one of the top schools in NYC. It just is.

nono i don’t doubt that it is (some of my friends graduated from regis a few years ago) but snobs i went to hs with never considered it one, and to this day i don’t understand why. not only are you guys like the hardest to get into, i say you have the best location. lucky lucky boys!

CT - Greenwich Country Day School, Greenwich Academy, Brunwick, New Cannan Country, Greens Farm Academy, St. Lukes in New Cannan, King Low Heywood Thomas, Hopkins School and Covenant Of Sacred Heart in Greenwich.

CT is in rich in excellent Prep Day Schools with large endowments and beautiful campuses. Love it!

I’d also add Sidwell Friends School to that list–it’s definitely up there, might actually be the top school in the area. And you have to note that all the schools godsfavorite listed are single-sex schools, and that Georgetown Prep does have a boarding program.

gilman (boys);mcdonough(coed) has a large endowment and a fabulous campus. not sure about academics…

DEFINITELY Roxbury Latin School in Boston. It was ranked as the #1 feeder to top colleges, etc. And it seems to be pretty presitigious.

This should sum things up for New York City:

Coed Regular Schools:
Horace Mann
Riverdale
Fieldston
Trinity

Coed Religious Schools:
Ramaz (Jewish)
Loyola (Christian)

All-Girls:
Brearley
Chapin
Spence
Sacred Heart
Nightingale

All-Boys:
Browning
Collegiate

Brooklyn:
St. Anne’s
Packer
Berkley Carroll

The downtown progressive schools are okay, but I don’t really know much about them.

Dalton isn’t as good as the above, and has a rep for drugs. Same goes for York Prep, Dwight, and I don’t know much about Calhoun other than the fact that it’s not that good.

NYC certainly has a sh…load of excellent day schools

NYC is ridiculous…
and two of the city’s best schools aren’t even private (so there’s SERIOUS testing and strong admissions requirements) – Hunter and Stuyvesant.
