Of course New York City has a larger population than most states of the United States, and a northeastern orientation toward private schools, so it is to be expected that are quite a few competitive private schools there.

tokenadult, you make a very good point.

PurpoisePal,

I agree with most of the schools on your list of the top NYC day schools. However, there is no way that Loyola belongs on that list. I don’t know that much about Ramaz, they’re not in Peterson’s book. Packer and Berkley Carroll are on the bubble. I am not a great fan of the Dalton educational philosophy, but you cannot argue with their high SAT scores and impressive college matriculation data. For some parents in NYC, it is the ultimate school. Every top school now and then has scandals but the cream of the crop usually survive.

I’m in the same boat as you, ptribecca. i don’t think loyola deserves to belong on that list. i think that ramaz is top notch school, but it obviously appeals to a smaller sect of the population.

while i didn’t like dalton too too much, a great deal of my friends went there, and i wholeheartedly disagree with anyone who says that dalton does not belong on a list of manhattan’s best day schools. dalton has incredible matrics, high scores, and it’s just all around super well regarded inside (and outside) manhattan… it’s very much a family’s dream school. i mean, dalton’s being given a rep for drugs, although there is drug use in all of manhattan’s top prep schools (maybe in lesser circles in the religious ones, but i wouldn’t know for certain) and i know of schools with a more serious – though quieter – problem than dalton’s.

where are all these schools located? Upper East side? Are they all in Manhattan?

horace mann, fieldston, and riverdale are all located in Riverdale (in the bronx). For the most part, the other schools are on the upper east side.

Also: The above list is a bit generous, I think…in my opinion, the “best day schools in New York” would go something like:

Coed ~ “1st tier”
Horace Mann
Trinity
Dalton

Coed ~ “2nd teir”
Riverdale
Fieldston

All Girls ~
Brearley
Chapin
Spence
Nightingale-Bamford

St. Anne’s is also excellent, but it’s pretty different than the schools listed above.

I’ve often heard Brearley referred to as the “Horace Mann of girls schools” in terms of college admissions and academic rigor.

add this one to texas Keystone school San Antonio

Trinity is on the Upper West side.

haha, i will do san francisco since everyone else is doing east coast schools.
Catholic- Convent of Sacred Heart, Stuart Hall, Saint Ignatius (Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep is lower than these schools but still good)
Independent- Urban, Lick-Wilmerding, University
Public- Lowell

Also in the San Francisco Bay Area-

University High School
Marin Academy
Head Royce
College Prep H.S. (mean SAT 1437)
Athenian

Dalton wasn’t on my list because most of the kids that go there are able to pay their way into college despite the fact that it’s getting increasingly harder to do that. I don’t think it’s as good as the rest academically. I’m not in the christian-school loop, so I wasn’t sure, but I heard that Loyola is one of the best christian schools in the city. Also, I think that Horace Mann, Riverdale and Fieldston are pretty equal. They’re just different in atmosphere. Horace Mann is more of a cutthroat enviroment, Riverdale is very liberal, and Fieldston is known as a party school, but is really good nonetheless.

PurpoisePal,

If Dalton students are paying their way into top colleges how do you explain their extremely high SAT scores? I think that for some reason you have an axe to grind.

Another Anomaly,

A very good list for top NYC day schools, except for one glaring omission. Collegiate School; the oldest, and some think the best, school in NYC.

Horace Mann, Riverdale Country School, Fieldston, Trinity, Dalton and Collegiate are all excellent schools. I would not necessary ranking them in different tiers. I have seen students who transfer to Riverdale from Horace Mann or Fieldston. They do not perform better or worst than their classmates. There are Riverdale student who transfer to Horace Mann or Fieldston too. It is all about the fit right. Students who do well in Horace Mann might not do well in Fieldston. Students who are happy in Fieldston may feel miserable in Horace Mann. Not all schools are the same. Curricula, approach, pedagogy and environment are varying more than one might think.

If you live in the Westchester County, Hackley, Master and Rye Country Day are the top day schools.

I mean there are Dalton kids who can (and do) pay their way into colleges, but I think if you look at any at the top tier of NYC private schools, you’ll see that can (and does) happen at any of them. At my school, I knew kids rich enough to do that, and I’ve always felt two or three schools had far more kids do that than Dalton ever did. I didn’t go to Dalton, I didn’t want to go to Dalton, but I don’t think it’s significantly worse than other top schools in the city.

(And to the above poster, a lot of Westchester families send their kids to the private schools in Riverdale)

There are people who say the same about every single one of the elites in New York City. I don’t know how they’re so sure. Competition at those schools is absolutely fierce, and any such paying of the way is done extremely discreetly, if at all.

Ptribecca, don’t forget that Collegiate is a boys school (and probably the best all boys school in the country, or at least in new york) so you can’t rank it with the 1st tier co-eds.

cfmendez618,

Of course I know Collegiate is a boys’ school. I live in NYC. I was responding to Another Anomaly post concerning the top schools in NYC, which included co-eds and girls’ schools. By the way, the girls’ schools are every bit as rigorous as the top co-eds as can be verified by curriculum, SAT scores, and college placement.

Yeah, I go to one of the girls’ schools. In terms of ivy matriculation, the girls’ schools and some coeds do better than any of the boarding schools.

What high school in the country has the highest average SAT score?
