Top Private Day Schools

In DC - Add Holton Arms, possibly the most prestigous local girls day school; and Georgetown Visitation, located adjacent to Georgetown University, over 200 years old, and an excellent Catholic private day school.

It’s a fine school, but I would consider Holton-Arms a tier down from NCS.

I agree with naoka, Holton Arms is often considered a tier down from NCS… In the Washington D.C. area I would say:
1st Tier- St. Albans, National Cathedral School, Sidwell Friends
2nd Tier- Holton Arms, Georgetown Day School, Maret School
3rd Tier- Georgetown Visitation, Georgetown Prep, Potomac School, Stone Ridge
4th Tier- Gonzaga, Holy Cross, Holy Child, Bullis, St. Andrews

If you live in the Connecticut River Valley you have some awesome choices for day school including Choate, Loomis, Suffield, Avon, Miss Porters – also Kingswood-Oxford … and probably a few more that aren’t coming to mind.

1st tier:gilman/mcdonough?
2nd tier:boys latin/garrison forest??
just for discussion!

Great ountry day schools abound in Baltimore. The argument about which is best resembles that of the college discussion. But for the well rounded boy St.Paul’s is an attractive destination. Historically STP not as rigorous as Gilman, enhancing a bright student’s chance for a higher class rank. Not an Ivy feeder but Union’s, Hamiton’s, W&L’s, F&M’s prominent on matriculation list.

Baltimore Schools:

Bryn Mawr is also good. What about Roland Park? Is that good?

Also, how does Park School rank among these schools?

isn’t roland park a sister school to gilman?

Regarding private day schools, does anyone have any thoughts regarding Rye Country Day vs Brunswick? Hate to put it in those terms, but those are the two we’re down to. Any others in the Westchester/CT area we should be considering? Thanks!

Best in the Phoenix area:

Brophy College Prep (Jesuit, all-male)
Phoenix Country Day School (for the very wealthy)

newprepdad:
what are your requirements? Is athletics a consideration? Boy or girl? (Isn’t Brunswick all boys … so a dumb question on my part?) How far north or east can you go?

Can’t speak from personal experience, but a bunch of the kids on the boy’s hockey team which my daughter plays on attend Rye Country Day and the parents all seem very happy. Most are 8th graders who have attended for years and I think all plan to stay through HS levels. Actually, my daughter’s girl’s hockey team uses their ice as home ice and facilities seem very good whenever we are there for games.

newprepdad,

We live very close to Rye Country Day. My son is applying for 9th grade to Horace Mann, Riverdale, Hackley, and Rye Country Day. At the moment that is our order of preference.

cnp55- athletic is a consideration. My son, who is currently a ninth grader plays both hockey and soccer at the travel level. We don’t really have any requirements other than an engaging academic environment and great facilities which just about all of the school seem to have. That’s why it’s so hard to get a good read.

biffgnar- thanks for your response.

NYmomof2- living as close as you do to RCDS, there must be a reason(s) why you would consider a longer commute to school???

Horace Mann is a lot better than RCDS. Hackley’s really good too, though…

newprepdad, We’ve ranked the schools according to perceived academic rigor. Our perceptions are based on information from very small samples of students and parents, as well as reputations, and they may not be entirely correct. My son is happiest in intense intellectual environments (for example, he spent this past weekend at MIT listening to 2-hour lectures on subjects like number theory). The public school is just not doing it for him. I feel strongly enough that Horace Mann is the right place for him that he would not be applying to the other schools if we could be sure he’d get in there.

Thanks for your responses!

Oh- I know people at Riverdale, and honestly, I’d bump Hackley above Riverdale. They don’t really get that many people into Ivies, and the kids there are really mean. Also, they party dangerously hard.

One more thing- Riverdale’s getting sued for admissions policies. http://www.nydailynews.com/front/story/452057p-380365c.html</a>

I hope you’re in the targeted demographics.
