Tough squeaky toys for dogs?

My dog is driving me up a wall. She is 7 and for the first time in her life, is obsessed with squeaky toys (we took in a forever foster a few months ago and he came with a squeaky ball… that was her introduction to them). I’ve bought her several squeaky toys over the last few weeks and she breaks all of them within a few hours. I’d just let her live with it, but she walks around the house with the dead ball in her mouth whining. When I take it away, she barks at wherever I put it.

Yes, my dog is spoiled.

I’ve been buying her the Kong balls which are supposed to be tougher but nope! Does anyone here know of tougher squeaky toys or am I just going to go broke until this phase is over?

A note from our dogs: Your go dogs. …go straight to the store. We love the multi sqeaker toys AND the pretend doggie beer and/or champagne bottles. They sqeak up a storm.

Oh, and if your parents think you are spoiled remind them of this: A happy dog lives longer. We have used this for years.

Love, Ellebud dogs (age 15 and13ish)

There are lots of pretty much indestructible dog toys. Tuffys are one of them. Your local independent pet store should have a good selection. In my experience, though, the dogs have more fun destroying ten toys that cost 1/10th the price… so I buy cheap toys from petedge.com instead of paying for the “good” ones.

Trust me, I have no problem spoiling my dogs, I just would prefer not to go broke doing it

I didn’t think of just going the cheap route and letting her destroy those… definitely a good idea! None of our dogs before this liked squeaky toys so this is a whole new world for us!

I also might be investing in really good earplugs if anyone has recommendations for those lol!

My foster dog is an incredibly destructive chewer. He has ripped his way through toys that my other dogs played with for years. I have never gone in for squeaky toys–for obvious reasons!–but the last time I was at the dog store I looked at something that was a clear plastic bottle with a squeaky top. The sales person said that if your dog destroyed the bottle, you could replace it with a regular plastic bottle. I passed, since the squeaking would drive me batty, but it might work for you.

Rudy the foster dog LOOOOVES plastic bottles to destroy. Every once in a while I give him one. I figure it costs 5 cents–the deposit–and when he has destroyed it I can still put the remains in the recycling. Much better than the $10 dog toys he has destroyed in under an hour! :)

I have only found a few toys my Golden Doodle couldn’t destroy within minutes and none of them are squeaky toys. You have my sympathy.

This Goughnuts ring makes a squeaky noise, but it’s not a squeaker per se. My 70# pit mix tears most Kong apart, but the Goughnuts stuff lasts. Pricey, but if chewed to the red warning, they’ll replace it for free

http://dogs.thefuntimesguide.com/2008/04/go_nuts_dog_toy_goughnuts.php</a></p>

Be careful with the squeaky toys…if you don’t watch the dog close enough they can get into it and ingest the squeaker.

That being said, my family has sworn by Nylabone for years. We’ve always had large Labradors (90-100+lbs) who could destroy any toy in under an hour, but the Nylabone survived for most of their lives. Not sure if they make any that squeak, but it’s worth a look.

Replace it for free you say? Hm… dog might just say challenge accepted!

I appreciate the sympathy, nrdsb :).

Yes! Definitely something I keep an eye out for. She has a deformed lower jaw that makes it really hard to pull things apart so it’s not something we’ve had to deal with yet

I’m going to check out all these suggestions. There’s gotta be one she can’t destroy!

On a similar note, maybe this is something that @bevhills can help me with, our forever foster is around a 12 year old lab/GSD mix. He’s still got some puppy instincts (gotta love those old doggie energy bursts!) but is mostly just a mellow old dog. He does love gnawing on bones but I’m afraid that they might hurt his teeth. On the other hand, I’m afraid to get any too soft because I’m afraid they’ll crack and he’ll swallow them. Any suggestions for our geriatric pups?

My pups find a way to destroy all toys within a short period of time. My vet sells Zanies and they are the most played with and longest lasting toys in the toy box. I find the one made from the “berber” to be the best. http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=zanies+dog+toys&tag=googhydr-20&index=aps&hvadid=30957253461&hvpos=1t3&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=7979547162377729524&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=e&hvdev=c&ref=pd_sl_172ni0rbbf_e</a>

Cycle dog makes good balls, but they will still get destroyed.( they do have squeakers)
Our dog also likes the flat cheap animals with multiple squeakers.
He also has Tuffy toys, which eventually get destroyed but only if they are a new animal to him and he enjoys the heck out of it.
Be aware that threads from cloth toys can be ingested and wrap around the stomach/ intestine.
A dog park friend had to put his german shepherd down when he ate the remainder of a similar toy at the park.
I also give him cardboard boxes with a toy or treat inside and let him eat his way through when I go out.

Mr. Ellebud describes our dogs’ interaction with toys as, “Eat the $20!”

We have used the same toys over the years. They go through phases…we never had a dog who liked the nylabone.

We have a Great Pyrenees who can do a number on toys ad this is one of the best ever. She loves it and it is amazingly indestructible.

I bought our dog a horse ball. No squeaker though, but I figured if a horse can play with it, it might last him a while.
He only is allowed to play with them at the dog park. They last about a month when we go every day.

I also thought you might like this article about the American dog.

<a href=“The State of The American Dog”>The State of The American Dog;

That was a beautiful article, ek. Thank you for sharing it.

This was our goldens very favorite squeaky toy: <a href=“Pet Supplies, Pet Food, Pet Products at Low Prices + Free Shipping | PetMountain.com”>Pet Supplies, Pet Food, Pet Products at Low Prices + Free Shipping | PetMountain.com; He was also a big toy destroyer. I think I spent as much in squeaky toys as I did on vet bills.

Nevermind, see you tried a Kong.

I’d suggest Kongs filled with plain yogurt or something similar and frozen.

Like ellebud, I have never had a dog who had any interest at all in Nylabones. (No wonder they last! ) They do like the edible bones made by Nylabone, but Rudy the GSP (pictured) destroyed and devoured the largest size (approx $6) in under 15 minutes. The same afternoon he destroyed the other chew toy I bought for him, which was sort of a ball with holes. That was an expensive afternoon. :)

Even Rudy doesn’t destroy the Kong, probably because he loses interest in it after he gest all of the yogurt out. He prefers something he can sink his teeth into and rip at.

Both dogs love their kongs. My mom makes them homemade treats (huge batches which we freeze and thaw as needed) and we stuff them in there every night. They then amuse themselves for a good long time trying to get out those treats

Maybe I’ll get old dog (Pete) a kong brand bone that he can chew on.

My dog believes squeaky toys are just “todo” projects. Try throwing some small rocks inside an empty water bottle. My dog will drag this around for a could of hours shaking crazily and it annoys me less than the squeaks. Eventually he’ll destroy it, but it’s basically free so that’s fine.
