The Trader Joe Top 10 product thread lasted for years.

Thought like to start a thread on dislikes so to avoid them. I will start.

Bought a can of TJ Hot Chipotle Salsa, it is tasteless and NOT hot in my book. The tomato inside is not chopped, more less like right out of the can and very blend with no zest.

I don’t like their breads. They mold too easy. Which probably means they are fresh/have a short shelf life but, really, I need more than one or two days.

They seem to have two kinds of canned tomatoes. One is acceptable. The other is consistently unripe, hard as rocks–well, for a tomato --and often has significant amounts of peel left on them.

They do, however, have good low carb bread. I keep it in the refrigerator, so no mold. :)

I don’t like the two TJ Dark chocolate bars with sea salt that is selling for $1.99 here. One of the bar is blue in color, and has a sail boat and a bird on it, the other bar, orange in color, that has a hand holding a nut and a squirrel under the hand. The caramel filling inside is too thin and every time I bite into it, the filling spills out all over my hand and cloth. I like the taste otherwise.

I am probably in the minority but I don’t like much at Trader Joes. I am always disappointed in the produce there (it might just be a function of my local TJ’s, which is one of the smaller stores). I find better quality and price buying a generic organic brand (Nature’s Promise) from the local Stop and Shop.

When I’ve bought trail mix from them, I have several times discovered the nuts in it were rancid. I tried some almond butter from them-- also rancid. And don’t even think about buying fish there.

I don’t like most of the Trader Joe’s brand chocolate items, i.e…chocolate-covered ginger, chocolate-covered pomegranate seeds, chocolate-covered almonds. They sold something called Cowboy Bark, I think, that sounded great, a mix of chocolate-covered pretzels, nuts, etc, and it was awful. I think they use very poor quality chocolate in many products. Exceptions include chocolate-covered Joe-Joe’s, which are fantastic, and their Christmas time Peppermint Bark. I’m not one to throw away chocolate, but I do throw away theirs.

Their frozen Mac and Cheese is delicious, but the “reduced-guilt” version is inedible.

The only thing I like at TJ’s is their fresh Bruschetta. I avoid the store. I prefer just about every other store more than Trader Joe’s. The aisles are always too crowded, bread gets stale easily, meat too expensive.

Hmm…I have a jar of almond butter in the cabinet right now and it’s been fine. I can’t say I’ve bought anything at TJ’s that I’ve disliked, but I don’t buy any of my produce there, or meat - except the meat for steak sandwiches.

We don’t care for any of the frozen pizzas we’ve tried. Inferior crust, to our taste buds. That said, we like a LOT of TJ stuff - it is part of our shopping routine.

A lot of their produce items are pre-packaged, rather than an open bin that I can choose individual green beans etc, potatoes where I can buy just one or two. So produce is not something I buy a lot of there… but quality has been fine on what I do get. Especially like their Brussels Sprouts on the stalk. (Oops, that’s a like, not a dislike… can’t help it. I’m a fan).

I bought some Indian food-style simmer sauce and didn’t like the flavor. Later, I bought a different brand of the same type of simmer sauce at another store and liked it.

I’m another one who can’t find a single reason to go to Trader Joes. Produce is average or worse, too many artificial ingredients in the prepared stuff, half the store seems to be snacks and sweets. (The staff is very nice, but that’s hardly enough.) The other day I was standing in line at our local Mrs. Greens, which is in sight of Traders Joes, and the woman behind me started marveling about the line of cars waiting to get into the TJ parking lot, remarking there was not a thing in the place that was appealing. So I know there are at least two of us in town who feel that way! I was excited when it opened, but after two fruitless trips, when I walked out empty handed, I just drive by. I have a lot of really good grocery store options in my area , so I have to guess that the big TJ fans live in areas where there aren’t a lot of of better choices. If it’s not that, then I’m just baffled.

I find almost all the food in their prepared foods section really unappealing. The sushi looks like it was frozen or something worse, and the salads always look days old. I think most of the prepared foods are shipped to them and are, in fact, days old. Nothing looks fresh in that section.

Trader Joes is filled with prepared food. If you like to prepare your own food starting from ingredients, then Trader Joes is less appealing: they don’t even have a lot of ingredients I’d want, and their meat and produce are both inferior.
