Transfer Advice for Fall 2010

Hi everyone, I’m transferring into the Curry School of education for communication sciences and disorders. I am sooooo excited to come in the fall, just want to ask a few questions for some honest answers.

Housing - what’s the BEST on-grounds housing for transfers that is close to classes and stuff?
So far I have heard Bice and Lambeth…a single room would be nice too though.

I’m a vegetarian, are there any natural food stores in Charlottesville or any options in the caf on grounds?

In Curry, how are the students…competitive…closeknit etc. Any inside info on the Communications sciences and disorders program would be great!!!

Also I heard about some racial incidents…is this typical on campus or was this an isolated event?

I’m from DC…how far is the Amtrak train station or bus station from campus?

Sorry for the long post…Thanks in advance…can’t wait till the Fall!!!

YAAYY! Welcome to UVA! I transferred second year here and I haven’t looked back, at all. Glad you’re excited!

Housing: Lambeth is the way to go, hands down, with Bice following close behind. Look on www dot hoohasit dot com. There’s a bunch of people trying to get rid of their contracts there for Lambeth/Bice. All you need to do is contact the housing office saying you’d like to take over said person’s contract, give them a $100 deposit, and then the other person does the same. Distance-wise, they’re a toss up, both are about the same walking/busing distances. I think Lambeth is more social and closer to Rugby Rd/the Corner, which are the top social spots. Don’t worry about having a single, to get one you have to live in Gooch/Dillard/Hereford area and it’s soo far from everything, but that’s my opinion.

Food: there’s a Whole Foods not far up 29 and there’s a world-market-type place nearby too. There’s also local farmer’s markets downtown. C’ville is a pretty “liberal” type city so there’s lots of other veggies/organic/vegan people, so there is a market for it all down here. There are veggie options on-grounds too.

Curry: where’s Hazel? She’s a Curry student, she can give you a lot of info on it

Racial incidents: they happen everywhere in life. It’s not typical, although we are a southern-feel school so there are some stereotypes floating around. UVa has a pretty diverse population though from preps to punks, intellects to nerds, very religious to Bob Marley-worshippers. It’s one of the things I really enjoy, I have friends ranging from the southern frat to the typical EE majors (well ok, one is both haha). The student body is pretty close-knit so a lot of the recent incidents are not the norm.

DC distance: Amtrak station is on the Trolley line, but plenty of students in Lambeth/Bice/upperclassmen housing have cars so you could catch a ride. Also, on said link above, lots of people offer rides home to the DC area.

Welcome!!

Hrmm…housing, I can’t really speak to, as I moved off-grounds immediately. I’ll let someone else handle that. Same with Curry and its atmosphere- Hazelorb is the resident Curry expert. :)

As far as food, you’ll find vegetarian options on Grounds with all the main dining facilities. There are dozens of grocery stores in Charlottesville (small and large), including a Whole Foods and Harris Teeter usually has a good stock of fruits and vegetables. My roommate and her boyfriend were vegetarian and never had problems with eating out or grocery shopping, or having variety in what they ate.

The racial incidents are somewhat isolated. They happen on occasion, but it is not a part of the norm. Some students self-segregate, but that’s not the case for everyone.

Amtrak is pretty close, maybe a 10-15 minute walk from Main Grounds. I can’t remember if the University bus system route goes past it, but if it doesn’t, the free Trolley or the Charlottesville City buses should.

Go for Bice or Lambeth. Great places to meet people which will be important as a transfer student. They’re also within walking distance of Curry.

If your offered Copeley or Faulkner then find off grounds housing. It will be cheaper and much closer to your classes.

-

Amtrak runs right into the middle of downtown. It’s a great way to get from DC to Charlottesville.

-

Bit of unsolicited advice. Transferring is hard, you’ve got to work at meeting people and making friends. There’s an activities fair in the Fall where all the clubs on grounds setup tables and recruit new members. It’s a great way to find people who share your passions. Sign up for a few groups, try them out out, and even if you don’t stay involved you’ve still met a few people.

thanks soooo much :)

Hey again, i also though of some more questions.

How do you find an job on grounds? I dont have any work-study or anything, but Im going to need a part-time job.

Also are there any honors programs for transfers…i know some schools only allow freshman but some do select tranfers.

thanks, you guys are great :)
