Transfer from UVA to Smaller (Catholic?) School (ND, BC, Villanova, HC, Wake Forest)

She seems pretty undecided (which is ok), but not sure that makes for an effective and successful transfer app cycle. What career(s) might be on the table?

I think it’s a mix of the first-year adjustment away from home + her going into it not where she “wanted” to be. It was tough in the beginning out of state; she felt all the in staters stuck together and it was hard to make friends. Her groups began developing and she’s pretty happy with her group right now. She has mentioned that overall a lot of the girls can seem elitist and not always willing to branch out/make friends, but that obviously can be everywhere. It takes time to find your people. I think a lot of it may just be adjusting to such a different, “on your own” lifestyle. She seems to be doing better everyday, but I don’t want to totally shut her down on the idea of transferring. Maybe her mind will change after second semester, but it can’t hurt to submit a few applications I suppose.

If not finance, something in the marketing realm. She’d love to get into media/sports. Thinking English could be a good background for that.

Don’t know too much about Dayton. Will look into it!

Why go 2nd choice. Major over college.

The major at UVA isn’t assured.

But it’s unlikely one loves finance but then English as a back up.

Is this a - finance pays, English doesn’t thing ? In the end, studying what you want is important.

I’d be looking to ensure I applied for and got the major I want vs a name.

But I’d also be confident in my major choice and would apply for the right reason. One may have better career prospects but if you’re miserable, what’s the point ?

She’s back and forth. She’s going to chat with a friend’s sister over break who is in finance in nyc. It will be nice to get a perspective from someone pretty close in age. She’s enjoyed her business type classes in the past, but will for sure be a definitive factor in the list

DD was an English and Business Enterprise Management double major at Wake. She was also Greek and president of her church group. Fairly introverted, she straddled the fence, so to speak. She had a great time and fulfilled her academic dreams. Admission to the business school might be problematic if she hasn’t had the requisite coursework in her freshman year.

Feel free to PM me.

Finance can be NY if you are talking Wall Street, something in investments, or the bean counter at work who always says no and there’s many other aspects.

Notre Dame, BC and Wake

She was waitlisted and subsequently not accepted? I’m not sure applying again to these three colleges as a transfer will yield a different result.

Holy Cross, Villanova…what about Providence College?

Aren’t some of the colleges she is considering now…OOS?

What about Davidson? It is significantly smaller than some other schools on the list, which may be what she needs, and it has the rigor plus the other things she is seeking.
Or, WashU? Smaller than Uva but similar in size and feel to others on your list.

Providence could be a good fit. If your D23 is interested in transferring pay attention if there is housing available to transfer students. My D23 has several friends that are transfer students and their housing wasn’t guaranteed at her school and one friend found out after they committed. Eventually they all found on campus housing but it wasn’t an easy process. ND doesn’t guarantee housing for transfer students and BC only guarantees housing for 1 year for transfer students.

What are her academic interests or intended majors?

Oops! I see answered above.

One thing to possibly consider would be non-Catholic schools weigh great Catholic ministry programs. I know it might be a hard sell but I taught at Pitt for a while and I think it’s way more Catholic than a lot of Catholic colleges. Their Newman center is located in an Oratory and it’s FANTASTIC. The cathedral of the Diocese of Pittsburgh is basically on the campus. Really tremendous if you can find it somewhere you like.

@Molly_McIntire19 What is her major? BC is great in terms of connections to professors and wonderful academics as long as she doesn’t mind the core requirements. But socially, without knowing people there, it can be tough. No Greek system. Most popular clubs are competitive to join. Housing process is tough and is usually not guaranteed all 4 years. Carroll School (business) is difficult to enter without direct entry. Richmond might be a good option for her, especially if she wants to major in business. Know people with kids at Providence and they love it! On west coast, USD, LMU and Santa Clara are all Catholic (with the latter two Jesuit). B Schools at all three, with Santa Clara having a lot of Palo Alto connections and networking. How about Fordham?

I’m not sure which state you are from, but last year, Clemson did not accept out of state transfer students. If you are not from South Carolina, it might be worth looking into the policy for this year.

Agree. Majoring in Econ at Morrissey is very different from being at Carroll. Morrissey has a lot of core requirements including foreign language, theology, philosophy, etc. Carroll students have far more access to internships, etc. Also, BC Clubs can be just as competitive to get into. It is by no stretch a small school. Academically, the professors are great, but search the forum for students‘ feedback on the social environment. It can be a challenge to break into the existing NE prep school circles. No school is the perfect „fit“ and I hope she finds her place at UVA especially during spring rush.

Carroll minors are easily available to Morrissey students, if that appeals (see the site for the list; options include marketing, accounting, finance, etc). I don’t know about transfers, but for freshmen, major wouldn’t matter for admission to Morrissey.

Edit, I had recalled that Carroll had done away with the foreign lang req, but apparently it’s back, or I was misremembering; Carroll has the same foreign lang req as Morrissey. Carroll and Morrissey both require the full BC core. (Only the education and nursing schools don’t have the foreign lang req.)

That is very true; every process is extremely competitive. Class registration, housing application, study abroad application (choice of school and semester), joining professional clubs for career development, etc.

It’s possible the FAQ I was looking at, which indicates a foreign language requirement for CSOM, is very out of date, as I had thought the FL requirement ended more than a few years ago.

Indeed, internal transfer to CSOM is almost impossible (so any student for whom a minor just won’t do should apply directly to CSOM).
