I have not even begun my first year of college and I’m already looking into transferring. I live in VA and was admitted early decision into Carleton College. However, as the moths have passed I have become more and more homesick (and I haven’t even left yet…). I was wondering, if I don’t like being so far away, how hard it would be to transfer from Carleton in UVA’s engineering school and how behind I would be. Carleton is a top tier LAC (equally as prestigious as Amherst and Williams), but is a LAC nonetheless. My proposed major is either math, computer science, or a double major of the two. If I were to transfer to UVA, I would like to be a part of their Computer Science Engineering program. What types of classes would I need to take my first year at Carleton and what would I be missing if I transferred after freshman year? Also, how difficult would the admissions process be? I do live in VA and my father went to UVA’s Darden School of Business if that helps. Thank you.

You could always do Computer Science in the (liberal arts) College at UVA if transferring to the engineering school doesn’t work out.
Just google for UVA engineering first year schedule, that should help you choose your classes.

Well still, how difficult would it be to transfer from Carleton into UVA’s School of Arts & Sciences and still double major in math/computer science on time?

To double major you would likely need to do the College version (BA), or do an applied math minor in the engineering school. It’s possible to do both but it’s strangely uncommon at UVA compared to other schools with dual programs (we don’t have a dual program). Most people choose to major in one and minor in the other.

Transferring to UVA is pretty difficult from what I understand, except for the guaranteed transfer agreement between community colleges in VA. People have more luck when applying after 2 years than 1. I did have a friend (out of state) who did not get in from high school but got in after 1 year as a transfer with perfect grades. So it really depends on your grades, which is not something you will know until you start getting them many months from now.

I really think you should try to enjoy your current college once you get there and worry about transferring later. There’s always an adjustment period, but if you approach it as something that you can change later then you won’t ever adjust. If you’re still miserable after winter break, then you have until March to apply to transfer.

If I applied as a transfer student after 1 year and was accepted, would I have to attend UVA the following year or would I be able to decline the acceptance if I chose to do so?

You can always decline. Do you mean defer for a year? I don’t know the specifics of that, probably not as a transfer.

I would absolutely encourage you to try. The first year of engineering school generally does not get into specialized courses, so if you make your course selections at Carleton to match the first year curriculum at UVA, you should not be behind. The E school is comparatively small. I recommend calling down there to the Dean’s office and see if they can get you a conversation with an advisor who can help you plot your course. If you can take a day to visit the E school, take a tour, ask to speak to people in faculty or administration about your plan, and then get some time to speak with an admission’s counselor about your goal - I think that could really help. By all means go for it! Good luck!!
