Hey there, it’s nice to have a thread like this around. Future transfer students can use this resource to ease their anxiety a bit (and hopefully give them hope, right?)

I’m also transferring from a large community college and am currently in my second semester. So far I’ve taken about 32 credits filled with mostly science and math classes with a 4.0 GPA. 32 on my ACT (superscore).

Two recommendation letters. One was written by one of the best writers I’ve come across- my college composition professor. The other, a slightly generic one from my Physics professor.

In terms of EC’s, I tried to keep it as relevant as possible. I’m the president of the campus Physics club, but focused more on my duties of organizing outreach events to elementary schools in underdeveloped areas nearby. It ties in with the overall theme of my application which involves my undying love for teaching, and my goal of one day becoming a professor. Virtually all of my ECs and community service revolves around this type of activity.

The colleges I applied to were mostly small, liberal arts colleges with a large emphasis on research in the sciences. Haven’t received any decisions yet, as they come out in May.

This is such a nice thread to have around! I was actually looking for something like these just to see where everyone is applying to, stats, and what not.

I am transferring from a large community college in NY and I am currently in my second semester. After this semester I’ll have 32 credits. My GPA is a 3.88 and so far it looks like it’s going to stay in that area range, if not higher.

I took two years off from school after graduation due to personal reasons (illnesses, financial problems, family problems). My 3.5 GPA in HS and my SAT (old) is a 1550 (terrible, i know). I was about average in high school and I’ve been doing a lot better now than I did then.

My EC’s are mostly paid jobs, sports related (I was trying to go to a D1 college for swimming in HS until I got injured), volunteer work, etc. I recently joined Phi Theta Kappa honor society, so that’s one of my most recent EC’s.

I have one letter of recommendation in at Syracuse when I applied for the Spring semester. This semester I am getting my english professor (got his bachelor’s from Brown) to right my a recommendation letter for the rest of my colleges.

Interview with Syracuse went amazingly well. The woman who interviewed me said I am “the perfect example of the type of student that Syracuse wants.” She really loved my answers to her questions, how quickly I would respond, my EC’s and she said I am a really well rounded student. There were only 50 spots available at Syracuse for the Spring semester so I was really shocked when I got in, and with a $10,000 scholarship. Unfortunately I had to defer because my family lost our house.

Applied to (as a PoliSci major):
Syracuse, University of Maryland, UMass Amherst, University of Rhode Island, Temple University, Tulane(deff a reach but the application is free so why not), UConn, SUNY Cortland (safety)

Got in: N/A at the moment

Rejected: N/A at the moment

My heart is 100% set on Syracuse, but I am applying to the other schools just incase I don’t get re-admitted to Syracuse.

I think what really will bring my application down is my SAT scores and my high school GPA, unfortunately. If I didn’t have such poor HS stats I would apply to a few more schools that have higher standards. The schools I am applying to now are better than the ones I tried for in HS, so I am happy about that. In HS I would never be accepted to Syracuse with a $10,000 scholarship, so that was reassuring. Here’s to hoping for a great academic future!

Needs to be pinned

I will post my results after getting all the decisions
I have applied Northwestern, USC, UCs, Vanderbilt, Umich, GIT, Duke, UT Austin, Wellesley, Cornell, Rice, UChicago, Brown, Upenn and NYU, and was accepted to Penn State.

@happy6523 , boy what a list hahahah My list started out with 20 colleges and dwindled down to only a handful. I just couldn’t give each college’s supplements the attention they deserved while keeping up with such a heavy courseload.

At the end of the day it did help. The small list I ended up with contains colleges in which I can envision myself. I’d be happy at any of them, in other words.

Applied as a transfer to the University of Richmond, Wake Forest University, Virginia Tech, University of Virginia, and James Madison University  Will hear back from Richmond hopefully this weekend!

Sophomore at Bryn Mawr College
GPA: 3.875
Major: probably Chemistry (I’m premed)
ACT: 32

ECs: (not much, probably my greatest weakness)
40+ hours volunteering at a a local hospital
Job grading HW for a stats class
10 years of piano + obtained Guild National Auditions high school diploma
Summer, unpaid internship at a stem cell company (junior year of high school)
Job as front desk receptionist at an art center (senior year of high school)
National Merit Semifinalist
(other various, less important activities)

LoR (for private colleges): 1 from Gen Chem Lab prof, 1 from Organic Chemistry prof

Accepted: SCU
Waitlisted:
Rejected: UCSB

Was pretty shocked, I thought SB was my likeliest. Not sure what went wrong. Scripps and Pomona are my dream schools.
Waiting on: UCI, UCD, UCSD, UCLA, Scripps, Pomona

@ettudis I think you’d have a fighting chance at Scripps. It doesn’t seem like you mind going from one women’s college to another, and it’s in an amazing area, as you know. Your ECs aren’t as bad as you think, either.

As for Pomona…well, you know. It’s one of those tough ones to judge accurately and commonly thrown into “a reach for everyone” pile.

@AGoodFloridian
thank you, I really hope so… if I got into Scripps my other decisions would not matter lol
I’m actually a CA resident trying to transfer back mostly because of homesickness. Back in hs, BMC was my best offer, but adjusting to college has been pretty tough emotionally :frowning:

That’s true, especially with Pomona’s “Stanford rejects” reputation. I’ll probably be laughing while opening my rejection letter, like I was with UCLA’s 2 years ago lol

Best of luck to you, may the admissions officers bless you with many acceptances c:

Yesss I’m so glad to have found this thread. Transferring from a community college in American Samoa. Received my Associate’s in health science and planning to get a bachelor’s in Biochemistry.

College GPA: 3.85
High school GPA: 3.98
Both unweighted.
SAT score (old) 1730… (Not as great but I hope my GPA and ECs raise up my chances)
My ECs mostly contain a lot of volunteer work. Even volunteered at the surgical clinic for a whole semester. Part of various clubs such as psychology, journalism, SADD, president of FBLA club. Also part of a youth group. I tutored Math during college but there wasn’t enough space to list it in the common app

Applied to: Point Park University, USC, Union College, Trinity College, Skidmore College, Cornell University, and Columbia University.

Accepted: Point Park University (presidential scholarship)

Still waiting for the others. I’m actually really worried that I prepared an application for DSU as a backup plan cause their acceptance rate is 100% and it’s really affordable, but I really hope I get accepted to the other colleges!

Oooooo a thread for Transfers! I’ve been stalking all the first year threads, totally jealous of the fact that they are already hearing back from all their schools.

I’m at a large public university, trying to transfer into mainly LAC’s, although I threw a few of the UC’s on there, and USC as well. I haven’t heard back from anyone yet.

College GPA (weighted): 4.25
(Unweighted): 4.0

ECs: I work full-time in addition to a full class load, so I don’t have a lot of “traditional” EC’s.

Applied to: Mount Holyoke, Reed, Bryn Mawr, Scripps, Wesleyan, USC, CAL, UCSD, UCLA,

I haven’t heard back from anyone yet, although Mount Holyoke should be sometime next week. I’m going crazy, waiting!

@CornellAEMplease how do I pin this thread?

Also thanks to everyone who has posted so far! Hopefully more people will as well.

I’m a sophomore from a regional campus of Ohio State.
I have a 3.55 GPA and some decent extracurriculars. I started by considering a ton of colleges, but ended up just applying to ones in the D.C. area, as well as OSU’s main campus.
Applying to:
OSU Columbus
American University
George Washington
George Mason
Maryland

Accepted to: N/A

Rejected: N/A

I haven’t heard back yet, but expect you in April.

ACT: 27

Applying to: Case Western, Baylor, American, Liberty, Cornell, U of Richmond, Carleton, and Grinnell
