This topic came up in a discussion with some friends, and while my son is a very happy 1st year student at UVA, my friend feels she can save money by sending her kids to community college for 2 years and then transfer over. I know it is possible, but how easy is it to transfer over? Is it an advantage, or not? Any input and insights would be appreciated.
If it’s a Virginia community college, the path is laid out…
If the family is of modest income, the net cost of UVa after aid, work study and federal loans may not be that much greater than the cost of community college, especially if the student can avoid the cost of buying and maintaining a car. A car is not needed inside Cville.
You lose some of the social benefits of UVa by transferring in as a 3rd year, because many people develop their social circles during their first year or through fraternities and sororities.
@“Dean J” is it possible for a student to graduate high school June 2017, take summer & fall classes at a CC and apply for spring 2018?
You should check if the classes he took are transferable. Otherwise he might have to take them again and that defeats the whole purpose of transfering.
