Hello, my daughter is interested in conservation, animal science (exotics), behavior, and maybe Vet School if all goes well. She already has some experience working at a couple wildlife rehabilitation centers and loves that work. She applied and got into some strong LAC’s, Cal Poly SLO and is waitlisted at a mini ivy LAC and Virginia Tech, which for now we take as soft rejections. However, for Cal Poly Slo she applied to the school of Agriculture, CAFES, as a generalist Agriculture major knowing that it’s harder to get into Animal Science there. Our question is about how easy it is to transfer into Animal Science or Pre-Veterinary given how competitive SLO is. Would she be better off going the LAC route where she can major in anything, but that will probably be Biology with all the pre-meds, and hope to complete all the prerequisites for Vet School. She is not “that perfect student”. Smart, motivated, but can take a while for it to all sink in, and is quite a doer who is very involved. So were worried that she might not get all A’s first quarter at Cal Poly to make the switch. Is that necessary? The school seems to tell us that it is not too hard to switch. If anyone has been through this or has advice she would appreciate it.
