Transferring to a UC from a four year Private

Hi there hopefully someone can help me with this question as the UC websites weren’t much help.

I am currently a Freshmen at University of the Pacific in California. Without going into too many details, I don’t like it and would like to transfer to a UC. From what they have listed on their site, this would be near impossible.

I was a very competitive student in high school and are now taking 16 units in my first semester here. My second semester I plan on studying abroad.

I guess my question is ore specifically: Is it worth it or even possible to try to transfer into the UC system as a sophmore from a private oris it more plausible to try to enter the university as a Freshmen? If I do the second option, could I transfer some of my credits over to the new UC, just like I brought my AP Test credits here?

Thanks for the help.Let me know if I wasn’t clear enough

UC’s only accept Junior transfers -60 units so you would need to spend another year at UOP.

Try here: <a href=“UC Transfers - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/uc-transfers/</a></p>

UCs generally only accept junior level transfers

You can’t reapply as a freshman, to the UC’s, that’s for students who have come from the high school with no previous college coursework other than what’s available on their campus.
If you’ve taken 1 unit after high school somewhere, you have to do the transfer route and, that is usually done for your Junior year.
It is up to the UC’s which credits they will accept from your university. Some of them, or all of them, might not transfer. You need to go to the UC website and look into transfer requirements. You can’t use the freshman admissions requirements.

It is almost impossible to transfer from another college to a UC. UC to UC is possible, but still very difficult. For UC to UC, especially to the mid-tier UC’s and the top tier UC’s, you would need a high gpa, 3.7+ to transfer. Your chances would increase if you were to drop out of UOP and attend a community college and later apply to the UC as a junior. UC’s do not admit sophomore transfers. Go to the UC website as suggested above or call the admissions office of the UC you want to transfer to.

Others above are correct, the easiest path would be to enroll in a CC and transfer as a JR. I wouldn’t keep spending big money at UOP if you don’t plan to graduate from there. Sometimes you need to take a step back to move ahead.

I will point you to a resource you might not know about; the UC Transfer Admission Guarantee. Most Cali CCs participate - you can get the course maps in their counseling offices.
The nice thing about TAG is, it removes all the guess work, they lay out the coursework and GPA you need. If you comply, you are in. The requirements vary by campus and major so, if you know what and where you want to study, look up the requirements and get going.

Good luck

OP also note that UCB/UCLA/UCSD and some Engineering majors at UCSB, no longer participate in TAG.

Good point, I should have mentioned that…
Not all campuses participate in TAG.

Thank you to everyone who has answered in such an informative way. It was really helpful.

I am actually attending UOP on a fairly large scholarship, so it costs slightly less for me to go here then say UCSB. I have decided that I will either stay here or attempt a transfer to a select private school.

I appreciate all the help, I think I may open a new thread soon relating more from private to private. (I am looking at Pitzer College for a possible Fall 2015 transfer if anyone has any insight)

HEY IM TRANSFERRING FROM UOP TOO! I was on a athletic/ academic scholarship, but it wasnt the fit for me. I went there for a year and a half. I left at winter break to come to community college, and applied to some UCS… I havent heard back yet. BUT PACS really f**cks you over when transferring… state schools dont accept it as fulfilling the English requirement… and well being an athlete kinda took a tole on my GPA so we’ll see about the UCs…

but yeah your AP credits will transfer to a UC as well.

Honestly go to a community college… get out of there! Lol
