I currently go to Emerson College in Boston for Media production. I just finished my Freshman year, and I’ve realized I’m not sure that’s what I want to do. I feel like I should go to a less expensive university, possibly closer to home (I’m from Pittsburgh). I think I may want to major in something like philosophy or pre-law, and go to law school after I graduate. I definitely want to go somewhere less expensive and with a larger student body, with more options so I can figure out what it is I want to do. I like going to college in the city, but I don’t see a lot of options for a less expensive university in a city in the northeast. Any suggestions? Please help!

If you want to go to law school (which will be very expensive) then you probably should just go to your local state school at a minimum expense (unless your parents are willing to pay for wherever you go.)

For law school, you really can just major in whatever you like, but you should include classes that develop thinking skills, writing skills, etc.

It may be too late for you to quickly get accepted to a state school for this fall, but you could go to a CC and then apply for a transfer.

What is your budget? How much/little do you want to spend?

Penn State could be an option, but I like the idea of going to school in a city. I’m currently spending around $40,000 (with room and board) to go to my current school. My parents are helping me, but I’m still paying for a good chunk of it. Also, my older sister is in grad school and I have two younger siblings who also plan to go to college, so I don’t want to strain my parents. Cutting my tuition to around half of what it currently is would be great.

When are you thinking of transferring to Penn State? Isn’t it too late for this year?

When you say that you’re paying for a “chunk” - what do you mean? How much have you borrowed so far?

If I were you, I would go to my local CC for this fall, and try to transfer to Penn St for spring 11 or fall 11.

Pitt has one of the top philosophy departments in the country. You’d be in-state and could live at home if necessary to save money.
