Transferring to UVA As a Third Year

I am a second year student at the University of Mary Washington and am looking to transfer into UVA next fall in 2015 as I want to put myself in the best position to apply for a law school after I graduate. Statistically, it looks like I will have a 3.6-3.7 GPA with only one poor grade over two years (a single C in statistics, though a B- in a freshman seminar is also a blemish) and average high school grades, though apparently that is less relevant as a third year transfer. Academically, I have pursued a rigorous schedule and should have over 60 credits on my resumé. Specifically, I have taken mostly reading and writing intensive classes including two notably difficult classes in Human Geography and a Latin class. In terms of best preparing myself for transferring, are there any classes I ought to have completed that UVA would want/need to see? Additionally, I am not exactly sure what I want to study for undergrad, so is there a big difference in applications to UVA’s various schools? For the application, which I believe is a common app, are recommendations recommended as they were in high school, or do they really only want to see the grades and your two essays? I appreciate any/all of the help!

If there’re not a lot of people on here who can help you, and even if there are some, why don’t you direct your questions to the transfer officer in the UVA office of admissions? The person in charge of transfer admissions will be able to answer all your questions more accurately than many of us can. They are there to recruit transfers to UVA. They want to help you make a good decision and can answer all your questions.

Think carefully about your reasons for transferring. If it is just because you think UVA will look better on your law school applications, you probably don’t need to bother with transferring. Law school admission is heavily numbers-based. Your undergraduate GPA, LSAT score, and letters of recommendation will be what matters. The name of the college/university that appears on your diploma will barely matter at all.

If the truth is that you aren’t happy at your current university, then put some energy to the issue of what you would like to major in. Until you know that, you can’t formulate a viable transfer plan, and a semester or year off while you think things through might be in order.

Thank you all for the help! I will contact the officer of admissions!

If you google uva transfer, there is a list of courses.

I will also link this page because it says you have 1 week from the time you start classes at UVA to declare your major. If you don’t know what you want to study, it would be a bad idea to transfer to UVA.
