Travel Dreams

Simple enough - what’s your dream destination if you had enough money, time, and Covid goes away.

For me it’s a month or more exploring the South Pacific comparing islands to see if Bora Bora is indeed more beautiful than Fiji, etc, comparing landscape, reefs, and general vibe.

So many… but if time/money were no objects - probably New Zealand.

That said, I have a love affair with Scotland and would love to explore every single nook and cranny there but I picked NZ because I’ve never been and a dream trip to me would be to a new destination.

Greek Islands on a private boat would be a close second.

New Zealand, definitely. And while I’m in that part of the world, I’d love to visit Japan, Australia, China, Thailand, etc. If I had the funds, time, and the right companion, I could easily spend several months (years?) exploring.

I’d also love to visit Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (Kenya), an incredible community run and ethical sanctuary.

And, of course, Scotland - every since reading the Outlander books years ago (I’ve never watched the series…)

That trip to Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific islands…but I want two months to do it.

And I’m still waiting to go on my trip to Hawaii!

Not a big dream. I just want to go to the Catskills, visit the Culinary Institute, and eat.

Ditto. We saw a show once where a guy had been to almost every country out there and was finishing up with some of the very remote ones. He wasn’t the host, just an “average” guy on the ship to Pitcairn Island where the TV host was heading to. H and I were envious. They never explained where he got his money from.

There’s a reason I keep the avatar I have (and H created).

We have a trip planned to go to Asia sometime in Oct next year.
I would love to go to Italy again soon. It has been too long (2 years). I used to go there few times a year when kids were young.

I don’t have a dream destination per se. But the travel adventure I’m most looking forward to is one of those around the world cruises.

Take something like 6 weeks and visit every nook and cranny of England and Scotland. Then take at a couple of weeks and do the same in Ireland. Been to Ireland once, and the proximity of it to England makes a re-visit attractive.

Once travel becomes normal again, looking at a 23 day tour of England, Scotland and Ireland. Driving on the left (wrong!) side of the road terrifies us. Entering roundabouts going clockwise from the left gives me nightmares—and they have LOTS of roundabouts!

I’d like to do the trip we had planned for last June- Disney World staying at Animal Kingdom Lodge. Will attempt to recreate the plans when we can.

Since we are just dreaming, maybe Hawaii but idk if I really want to fly over all that water!

I’d like to go back to Asia and explore Vietnam and Cambodia this time and go to Thailand again. Italy and Portugal are on my list for Europe. New Zealand is also a place I would like to see. Then there are all of the National Parks here in the US I would like to visit for the first time or see again. There are lots of other places on my list. I want to get the vaccine and continue living my life.

Wales, Poland (Habitat build) and Quebec City. Places I had plans to visit in 2020.

New Zealand (except I don’t want to spend the time to get there!), Italy for at least a month, to stay in maybe (3) places and travel from each.

I have a love affair with Scotland too. I’d love to hike the West Highland Way and revisit Skye. My DH was invited twice to conferences there and each time we tacked on an extra week. We were supposed to go again this fall. Sigh. New Zealand is right up there - it looks just like Scotland!

I also want to hike Hadrian’s wall.

I would love to go to India because it’s my favorite cuisine.

I’d love to go back to China on a painting trip, and not see any of the major tourist things we saw on the last two trips. But it needs to be some sort of organized thing.

The actual next trip will probably be Japan since my younger son should be stationed there in the spring. This time I’m going to see all the gardens I did not see last time because we were trying to do mostly kid friendly things.

NatGeo “cruise” of the Galapagos. It was a possibility for this year before the pandemic happened.

As an aside, it’s always interesting to see how bucket list trips compare according to where people come from. Having lived in Africa and studied in the UK (so been able to travel Europe extensively too), my “bucket lists” have become those in the Americas! My other big one is to see the northern lights - which I imagine a number of people here have already done. By contrast I’ve been lucky enough to do some of the ones mentioned here already. Many things left that are wants for me (DH and I plan to spend much of early retirement traveling before we get too old to do it energetically, including some epic road trips in the US), but Galapagos and the northern lights are the big ones for me.

I’m all about the beach. Sightseeing is not my cup of tea beyond a day or two. So I’ll choose a long extended beach tour - maybe a week at 8 great beaches around the world. Walk, swim, enjoy the sun, dine outside, get ice cream/gelato nightly. Rinse and repeat. Throw in a trip to Greece.

@lookingforward - When you go through Poughkeepsie, I highly recommend the walkway over the Hudson River - https://walkway.org/ (My 93 year old father walks there once or twice a week… they made him an honorary ambassador. ) It’s also great to visit Vanderbilt Mansion and Roosevelt historic sight - very different homes, both quite interesting.

D20 and I did 10 days in Amsterdam, The Hague, and Antwerp in the spring of 2019. My absolute favorite trip so far and I would go back in a heartbeat! If it has to be a new place, I would pick either Copenhagen or Prague. My passport expired in May and I need to renew it but I know it’s going to take forever to get it back so I’m not in a hurry right now.

We spent 2.5 days in Amsterdam prior to a river cruise. We got there early to get over jet lag before the cruise, but enjoyed Amsterdam a LOT more than we anticipated. Would like to go back to see other parts of the Netherlands, along with Belgium.
Easy to get around the city, great museums, canals, bridges, flowers everywhere (just don’t get killed by a bicycle!!) Great restaurants, even had a rijstafel meal.

@helpingmom40 : We did an awesome Baltic cruise a few years ago, taking in all the Scandinavian capitals as well as St Petersburg and a few other towns. I had been so excited to see Copenhagen, and I have to say it left me disappointed… but - we absolutely (and unexpectedly) loved Stockholm, and Oslo was good, we liked Helsinki a lot more than we had expected, and of course St Petersburg is awesome to visit. Of course, this should all be done in summer!

Prague is one of my all time favorites, and you’ll probably really like Budapest too if you like Prague. Definitely worth a trip out imo.

Second Amsterdam as a great city too! We flew klm a number of times as it was one of the few airlines to fly direct to Europe from the city we lived in, so we’d spend a couple days there each time, and it never gets old.
