I’m in lovely, scenic Newark right now. The front desk guy at the hotel said they’ve already had airlines calling them, lining up rooms for Wed night. Didn’t think they were going to get hit that hard here, but just in case.

I golfed today! In a skort and a polo! I remember last year like it was yesterday. This year everyone traveled earlier. S is coming from upstate NY tomorrow after class. My west coast people are already in. The drivers from NJ are being told to hit the road early. I have enough food to feed everyone for a buffalo sized storm. How is my son a little east of there got almost no snow?

Yes I think I’m getting a turkey tomorrow. I already bought potato and stuffing fixings because I like to make “leftovers” when I don’t host.

Well, NYC never closes, but the airports, another story altogether.

The airports rarely close either, especially JFK, they need to get those international flights in. They will clear the runway for just one flight. But the airlines cancel pretty quickly.

Airlines starting to waive change fees…my H is on hold with United as I type. Hope he is successful…good luck to all!

Sorry - didn’t mean literally closed…more like impacted. Having lived in Buffalo for 23+ years and having lived in NYC and the tri-state area now for over 30 years, I can tell you without equivocation which region deals with weather more effectively. Until, as I said, snowfall exceeds 7 ft. In any case, I will cross my fingers that all the advance hype indicates a less than overwhelming weather event, as has so often happened in the past. I want my men in Buffalo!

Thanks for that link, gosmom. Both my kids flights are from some of those locations. Of course, if they cancel the flights and they can’t get to their destination, they’ll have to refund it anyways.

I’m sorry for everyone on the east coast facing these weather issues. If it makes you feel better, we had a big storm predicted today in the upper midwest and it wasn’t as bad as I expected. A lot of things are canceled and there were certainly the driving incidents, but it could have been much worse. So maybe if you’re getting the same storm a day or two later, it won’t be a crippling one.

H was successful in getting goskid’s flight from Dulles Wednesday at 5pm changed to Tuesday…and no charge…whew!
Luckily, goskid was able to leave then…

S2 is on Megabus from BOS on Wed. S1 is working in NYC at his company’s office on Wed. We are leaving early early Wed. am. With any luck, we will all wind up in Bayonne, NJ by the evening.

@busdriver11 – doesn’t take much to back things up at LGA though, as you well know! Hope everyone reaches their desired destinations safely.

CT1417, I do my best to avoid LGA, even in the best weather. JFK, though, is a different story. They may be delayed, the airlines may cancel, but it would have to be very extreme for the airport to close.

This is one reason GMTson isn’t applying to any colleges in the NE. With the ENTIRE country to chose from for college, why deal with this weather any more?

I don’t think it’s going to be that horrible along the I95 corridor. 3-5" and not particularly cold so more slushy on the roads, imo. Nothing that snowplows can’t keep up with.

Worse inland (like near Hartford/Springfield) but nothing like Buffalo and not a blizzard.

I agree with emily. Maybe not that bad driving, unless you’re further inland. It’s the airports that could be a mess.

The problem is the amount of traffic in this area. Plowing can be very tough when the traffic is so heavy to begin with. The Wednesday before Thanksgiving is certainly the worst traffic day of the year on the NJ Turnpike and all roads around NYC. But on a positive note for us, hubby was on vacation this week and will be called in to make a lot of money, which we could use with another college and a wedding coming up.

When the airlines get messed up because of weather, it can affect ALL areas, not just where the storm is taking place. Our kid went to college in CA and had more than one flight delayed or changed due to weather that certainly wasn’t in San Jose, and wasn’t here either.

The other kid lived in Winston-Salem and had flights cancelled because the connecting flight couldn’t get to Atlanta, or Raleigh Durham.

Kid now lives in Phoenix. You don’t want to hear his travel saga from last year…he got home, but it cost us an EXTRA $650 to get there…but he got an exit row seat. For that price, one way, he should have been in first class.

"The problem is the amount of traffic in this area. "

True. That’s why we usually take a pass when my families Thanksging or Passover is at my cousin’s on LI. Doesn’t even need to be bad weather.

It will definitely be slow going but this isn’t a major snow storm if the forecast is accurate (just bad timing) and cars are not going to be stuck and stranded along the I95 corridor.
