Travel Snow...here we go!

I think that is a very wise policy.

Here in PA it’s hard to believe we will have snow tomorrow. But then I remember back to the storm of the century in 1993 (anybody remember that?), and standing outside for recess duty the day before thinking the same thing.

Most news outlets are advising people to travel today or Thursday. But what if you can’t get out today? I’m so grateful we don’t have to travel, but I’m concerned about my sister who is heading to NY tomorrow. She can’t leave today because we are celebrating our father’s 90th birthday tonight and she’s bringing the turkey!

^ I remember that storm in 1993. We got 28 inches in Albany. We had a blizzard party at my neighbors and I had to walk through snow practically up to my waist to get there carrying my contribution to the pot luck.

“I think that is a very wise policy.”

When we do go we have to leave hours before we normally would and get there hours before we need to need to be there or we would be hours late. And they only live in Sands Point, so one of the first exits on the LIE. It’s a huge PITA.

Jeez i was on the other side of Boston that afternoon in 93, 90 minutes from home in good weather. And my meanie boss said, don’t leave early, traffic and bad weather are something we simply endure.

It seems as if so many weather predictions have been off in the last year. That big rain on Monday gets pushed to Tues then Wed, then never comes. We’re driving 3 hours north of Boston on Thu am. Some reports say maybe 6" Wed pm. Maybe some residual left on Thu am. Maybe more rain than snow. Who knows?

I remember that storm too. We got a ton of snow, and had no power, but the street behind us did. We knew the neighbor who came to get us in his new four wheel drive. He was thrilled…also drove hospital personnel back and forth to the hospital. We had so much fun…their three kids, our two, and their dog and ours. We were almost sad when the power came back on…almost.

The second day without power, my husband trudged home to get food out of the fridge. He cross country skied back with a backpack…through the backyards…over a stonewall…which was totally covered with snow.

S1, who could come home by bus Thurs morning, is insisting on taking the bus tomorrow night from Boston to Hartford. He told DH not to be concerned about picking him up if the weather’s too bad or his bus is very delayed. Is he planning to sleep in the dingy bus terminal? Hopefully, it’s not that bad.

DD is a first responder. She is working Wednesday night. She cannot find ANYONE who can put her snow tires on…today. Her fault for waiting…but still.

Yes, if there is “bad weather,” it can affect so, so many flights, even those at remote arirports that can’t get planes from the affected airports. That has happened to me when I fly from or to HI or CA–the planes are backed up due to bad weather elsewhere or can’t get out to fly the route I am scheduled to fly.

I recall being the last car allowed out of the Sierra Nevadas–literally they closed the highway after us because too many cars were being stuck in drifts in 1982. Fortunately then-BF was fairly experienced with driving in bad weather, being from Peoria, IL. It was still scary, with a lot of cars having little to no traction and so many cars stuck in drifts an snowbanks.

I wish everyone safe travels!

Do you think the air travel will return to normal by early Thursday morning?

Goskid en route…I’m happy H was able to get him out today vs. tomorrow. But now the forecasters are saying the West Coast is going to get walloped on Saturday, when both kids are scheduled to leave. Hey! Maybe they can stay longer! :)

HImom…that “bad weather in Peoria” comment made me laugh. I live in CT now, and lived in NH as well. The weather in Illinois is MILD compared to most places north.

I’m hoping that here in CT, we don’t get too much snow. I’m trying to find a plow guy and the amount they charge gets me bent out of shape.

Keep your fingers crossed. DD is on line with her snow tires. She is hoping that she will get her turn before the place closes. The line is LONG.

Hey, Peoria has a LOT more snow, ice and other inclement weather than we’re used to in HI & most of CA. He was the one who drove in the ice & snow when we dated. I have still never driven in snow and ice and hope not to have that joy. S does drive VERY carefully in bad weather, as he does encounter it from time to time in VA/DC, but they do plow the road and it melts pretty quickly.

I trust the road crews in the midwest much more than in milder places that don’t get so much snow. The drivers are generally better, too. Look what happened in Atlanta last winter.

Fortunately we put snow tires on all our cars this past Saturday.

A friend pointed out that our little New England town has more snowplows than all of Atlanta.

“S1, who could come home by bus Thurs morning, is insisting on taking the bus tomorrow night from Boston to Hartford. He told DH not to be concerned about picking him up if the weather’s too bad or his bus is very delayed. Is he planning to sleep in the dingy bus terminal? Hopefully, it’s not that bad.”

Not the best bus terminal to be stuck in.

Snow tires! I haven’t thought about them since I was a girl. I remember my parents changing out the ties for snow tires in the winter, or even putting chains on the wheels (when that was still legal). Those were the days of big heavy rear wheel drive cars.

I don’t know anyone who uses snow tires anymore on a regular sedan or SUV. I have all weather tires. I thought you didn’t want to use snow tires unless it was actually snowing? Am I the odd one out, are there areas of the country where people still put snow tires on regularly?

The snow tires are ON…Woohoo. Took only two hours of waiting on line.

Sally, we have two Volvo sedans with excellent all season tires for most of the year. BUT these cars do NOT handle well on the snow wothout snow tires…they just don’t. Almost everyone we know who has a Volvo sedan…or a Mercedes sedan…has snow tires for our CT winters. With snow tires, these cars can drive through almost anything. Well worth the cost!

And judging from the two hour line (at the third place DD went to…the other two were booked solid) we aren’t the only ones swapping to snows!
