@katliamom: Dordogne! And it won’t be too busy that time of year.
Re my favorite spot: I’m not telling!

@stradmom – your vote has been counted. And LOL about your favorite spot: very smart of you.
The Dolomites in Northern Italy
@katliamom we love Paris, the Loire river valley and Normandy. Our next extended trip will probably be in Normandy and Brittany. We love the Northern French food and the people there have been friendly, gracious and generous. I have not been to the Dordogne, but that’s on the list as well.
In Italy you should look into agriturismo in Umbria or the Marches. (our favorite locales) Best time to go for the best weather and best food is October after the grape and olive harvest. Wild boar, black truffles and spectacular wine.
@musicamusica I love Kings Canyon and Sequoia NPs. I grew up in the San Joaquin Valley and was lucky enough to visit them regularly, heck I still do. I guess, I just don’t count in state as travelling.
If we are counting that, then add the Coachella Valley, Death Valley, Sequoia National Park, Monterey, Avila Beach, San Francisco, and Napa as places I love to visit.
When it comes to large European cities, there’s a trick that works for me. Ignore the traditional tourist attractions. Pick a neighborhood and enjoy the cafes, restaurants, minor attractions etc in that neighborhood for 3-4 days, then move on.
@trojanchick99 – it’s a 4-5 hour trip for us, so I guess it qualifies as travel
We are fortunate to live in a state where there is so much to do and see.
We did Umbria a few years ago, and agree that it’s wonderful; I guess next time we should try agriturismo – that would be a new experience, thanks for the idea!
@musicamusica It is for me now too, but I have family still in the SJV so I usually go up to the park when I’m visiting. It’s normally my excuse to see snow.
Northern reaches of Vancouver Island

Nova Scotia
Quebec City
Pompeii

ETA: Tasmania
I love London, Hong Kong, Paris, New York City, Vancouver and Chicago.
I guess I like cities, you think?
All of the South American countries I’ve traveled to thus far. I can’t get enough. When I left I knew I needed to come back and see more.
The Caribbean. I’ll always go back. Friendly people. Relaxed atmosphere. Lovely culture. Beautiful history. I just feel so in place there.
San Francisco, Paris, Costa Rica, Hawaii , Portland OR, New York. The other thread is making me cry.
That San Francisco is on the other thread really makes me sad. I know it is all subjective but I could spend the rest of my life in Lincoln Park or in the observation tower in the de Young museum watching the views change as the fog goes in and out.
Anyway there’s a lot of other places but these are just the ones from the other thread.
Venice. Someday I’ll get my dream to rent an apartment in Venice for a whole month, so I can get up early and get agreeably lost in that amazing place before the tourists arrive and wander at night after they’ve gone. I need to do this before we lose this wondrous city to the sea.
I also love other bigger cities-- London, NYC, Berlin.
Places I would live to revisit:
Cape Town
Napa
San Diego
St. Martin
I love most places we’ve visited and would be happy to return and stay longer. There’s just not enough time to go everywhere and see everything. I enjoy SF, LA, DC, Seattle, St. Louis, Vancouver, Toronto, Ontario, Niagara Falls, Paris, London, Venice, Rome, London, Bath, Rottenberg ob de Tauber, Philadelphia, Portland OR, Freeport, Montreal, and all of our state of Hawaii.
I guess we’re all different and that’s all good!
Canadian Rockies. Italy- Amalfi Coast, Lake Como, Rome. Wengen, Switzerland. Ubud, Bali. New York City. London., Big Sur, California.
In the states, the Cannon Beach area (Oregon coast) and San Diego.
Just the thread I wanted; thanks GMTplus7!
Places I was tempted to live:
New Zealand! We went pre-Lord of the Rings and it was great then. Would love to go back and do the LotR and Hobbit tours. The people were so friendly. A family we met in the park in Auckland taught our kids to play cricket and invited us over for Sunday dinner. Lots of adventure stuff too!
Places I’d like to revisit:
Easter Island – Besides being just “wow!” the people are very friendly and speak Spanish so it is easy to get around, not that there’s all that much “around” on the tiny island. We also saw Pitcairn Island on that trip, which was very interesting.
Libya – We went in the short window of time when tourists could go, saw an eclipse and Leptis Magna. The people were nice, and Leptis Magna is amazing. Google pictures of it and see for yourself. It blew Pompeii out of the water (figuratively speaking). The parts of the country we saw looked prosperous, but we were always very close to the coast.
Malta – really interesting and laid back. Wish we had more time there.
Italy, especially Florence and Verona. Agree that the people are great. We liked Venice, but just to hang out and enjoy the food and sights, not to wait in line for the tourist stuff.
Egypt – So, the pyramids are amazing and just bigger than anything. The Cairo Museum is amazing. The difference between rich and poor was also amazing, but not in a good way, and I can see why there was an uprising against the government.
Bath, England (and Stonehenge nearby) – The way they’ve done the Bath museum is really cool for both kids and adults.
Paris – The people are nice to us because my husband is nearly fluent. I love just wandering around neighborhoods.
Australia – mostly Sydney and Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef
Prague – in the '90s, don’t know about now
Canadian Rockies – wow!
Vancouver and points north (ski resorts) and Vancouver Island
Boston
Beijing and Xian in China (not so much Shanghai, which was just all the bad parts of western cities)
Yellowstone
Southern Utah
Kauai’i
Kings Canyon back when we did more serious backpacking.
Portland and the rest of Oregon, especially Crater Lake
Places good for short trips for us:
Pinnacles National Park – on 101 between NorCal and SoCal – under-appreciated and worth a trip!
Yosemite
San Francisco
San Diego
Mammoth Mountain in a hypothetical good snow year
Cambria, CA
The beach at Cape San Blas, Florida; and the Castillo de San Marcos fort at St. Augustine, Florida.
