Trick Or Treat and Other Halloween Events and Goodies

Tomorrow is Halloween, always has been a favorite holiday, sadly not as much since we moved and I will be able to count any T-T’ers on one hand if at all. But fun none the less!

Are you celebrating in any way? What are you passing out? Are you dressing up for any planned events? Making any goodies at home to enjoy? What are you grandchildren dressing up as? How’s the weather looking for the little ones if your town hasn’t had T-T yet?

We’re doing a standard assortment of candy. But this year I’m gonna dress up in a seersucker suit, stand on the porch, and blurt out a spiel like “GET your asSORted CANdies HERE! ONE for a giggle, TWO for a smile, THREE for a song!”

No T and T’ers ever at my house.

I am currently making handmade cards for a game of Werewolf. I am the moderator of the game. Can’t wait to see who the Werewolves kill at my gathering tomorrow night! No one has any idea what I am planning, which is the way I like it :smiling_face_with_horns:

P.S. I’m making the cards out of political flyers. Finally, a good use for them!

We don’t celebrate ourselves. I definitely do NOT dress up, unless being a nerdy engineer counts. H has decorated our porch/yard with a few things: our scary pumpkin head man mannequin, some jackolanterns, some fake tombstones in the yard, a scary skeleton witch thing will hang from our porch, and a red light shines on our porch.

We do, however, get tons and tons of trick o treaters. I’ve spoken of this before. We sit on our porch for 1:30 and hand out our 20 pounds of candy until it’s gone. I’m thankful for Costco, because 20 pounds at Walmart used to be $100. Now it’s over $200. It was $100 at Costco. Weather is looking just about perfect IMO. Low to mid 60s. Partly cloudy turning cloudy by nightfall. Light winds. Sometimes we can get Alexa to reach out to our porch and we will play halloween music, but most of the time the wifi doesn’t make it that far.

After our candy is gone, we will go out to eat somewhere. Maybe we will watch the Shining or something. Probably not, but maybe.

We live a few houses from the hottest TOTing street, I have 2 big Costco bags and I assume I will run out. Street closes down to traffic at 3. Most of my adult kids have parties all weekend. H is going to one tomorrow night, I’m a party pooper.

Very few ToTers here, but I bought some Lindt truffles to hand out to the 4 or 5 neighborhood littles who might come by. It would be a terrible shame if my Costco bag has leftovers afterwards.

I bought mine weeks ago, hid it, and for the first year ever, didn’t sneak any.

I love seeing trick or treaters! Unfortunately there are few young families on my block, so I don’t get many.

Bought a pack of 30 assorted full size bars at Costco recently as well as some back up candy.

A friend and I mutually confessed that we had both already broken into our TOT candy. Sorry, not sorry.

We always go up to our old neighborhood and pass out candy with the five-household group on our neighbor’s driveway (we used to host). It’s a great way to catch up and enable the TOT’ers to hit five houses at once. Though all our kids are grown and gone, we’ve continued this tradition for 26 years now. We look forward to this so much that it drives when we close down the cabin as we MUST be back in AZ for Halloween.

Unfortunately, it’s actually raining in the desert today, and the forecast shows continued rain through Monday. No one in AZ ever complains about rain, though I feel sorry for the kids if it’s heavy enough to curtail the fun. Regardless, our neighbors will just bring the party indoors, and we’ll take turns manning the front door for any brave little characters who show up.

Twin grand daughters are having a blow out 6th birthday party tomorrow. Every K-level student at their school was invited. So all 3 kindergarten classes, plus older/younger siblings are welcome. At last count over 100 kids are expected. Plus parents.

Kids are to come in costume if they want. Venue is at a local park, where SIL rented out the pavilion. They will be a magic show (The Great Zucchini), a bouncy castle, face painting, plus pizza, cupcakes, cookies…

I’ve been tapped to pick 15 pizzas tomorrow, the street sign to show everyone where to go, and a dozen black, orange and gold helium balloons.

Will be a busy weekend.

I got the full sized candy bars at Costco, even though we normally have zero trick or treaters. We have had some turnover on our street, so we want to be prepared if we get anyone. If not, the candy bars will go in Christmas stockings (If my H doesn’t eat them all).

Very busy weekend as today is D’s birthday. I already went to the GK’s school to watch the Halloween parade this morning. Later today dinner and cake at D’s house. Two GK soccer games tomorrow, then over to their house to see them off before they TT. Then back home to give out tons of candy because we’re two doors down from a locally famously decorated house so we get lots of trick or treaters! Then bday lunch at restaurant Sunday.

I’m exhausted just typing this out.

If we’re lucky, we’ll get 5 or 6 trick or treaters. We live at the bottom a cul-de-sac with no lights. Until recently, it was all us old people with no little kids.
We should get the feral children from a couple of doors down and the well-behaved kids directly next door, at the end and across the street. I picked up the smallest bags of haribo and Twix to hand out.

My younger daughter just bought a house in a neighborhood that gets tons of kids, from what they’ve told her. She and her BF are doing some minor decorating to encourage kids to come up to the door.

I got Trader Joe’s candy to hand out, but during the stay at home Covid days our neighborhood started putting candy up at the end of the driveway. The parents of young kids seem to still like to do it that way, and we now have a highly reactive and highly anxious rescue dog so no knocking on the door is actually better for us.

We will get the 2 adorable young neighbors and maybe a handful of other ToTers.

Our neighbors across the street (also a reactive dog who likes to elope, I just had a smaller annoying barker) have a little hill with ivy, they sit in chairs on their lawn and put candy bags on the ivy next to the sidewalk. All are envies over, we’d go if it was warm enough and watch our bowl on our walkway.

D2 is a health care professional in a school system. She and her team dressed up today as “Costco”. I think they did an excellent job and had to be a hit with the parents during the school outdoor parade.

I birthed that rotisserie chicken.

I’m not really a huge fan of Halloween - I do like pumpkins and candy; witches and skeletons, not so much. We used to carve three Jack-o-Lanterns every year in Chicagoland and got 80-120 trick-or-treaters every year. Here in San Diego, barely a handful. I enjoy fall events but they tend to be same old same old over the decades.

There’s a party we get invited to every year at an acquaintance’s house in a very active TOT street (haunted house on the street). Hundreds of kids. Some years I go; others not. Husband always goes. There are several casual friends who will be there but (1) I am uncomfortable in crowds (2) there really isn’t a chance to visit with them (3) the fire pit gets me smoky (4) there isn’t much I like to eat so (5) I eat too much candy.

I always feel a little guilty, like I should want to go and be social, but I’m never really comfortable so have mixed feelings. Husband is more popular than me and I find myself sitting alone quite a bit.

So I will stay home and leave the lights off since I don’t like answering the door here after dark when I’m home alone (I was more comfortable with that in our old Chicagoland suburb). I’ll stay in the back room streaming shows.

Edit to add that it might be raining because a Pineapple Express is headed our way.

I am not into spooky Halloween either. I don’t mind the staged skeletons that are popular now but they hardly count as scary! I don’t like scary Halloween. Give me the cute trick or treaters, pumpkins, candy, hot cider and watching the kids scamper up to the door and in the neighborhood.

A big Halloween scene with adults and crowds and lots of noise - not for me either!
