I think my father (who was a Rabbi) influenced my ambivalent feelings about Halloween. He never liked the holiday because it was a historic day for pogroms against Jews, especially in Tzarist Russia. I was allowed to go trick or treating (Trick or Treat for UNICEF was big in my childhood) but we certainly didn’t decorate.
The weather is supposed to be relatively warm for Halloween in our neck of the woods, so we should get 80 or so trick or treaters. I have two big bags of Costco candy. I live on a cul de sac, and my neighbor & I will set up at a card table at the bottom of my driveway. We decorate the table & we pass out candy there. We have five houses on the cul de sac … one neighbor gives us her candy to pass out, so the kids hit the mother lode at my house (a 3-fer). One neighbor leaves his light on but doesn’t pass out candy, so we spend a lot of time yelling to kids to skip that house. The fifth house has newish owners. Last Halloween was their first in the neighborhood, and they had a ton of grilled hotdogs to hand out. They were really good, and I’m hoping they do it again … I don’t plan to make dinner!
The neighbor I pass out candy with & I enjoy a couple adult beverages between TorT’ers. Don’t tell.
H usually joins us, but he randomly came down with Covid yesterday & feels awful. If he’s feeling better, he’ll sit outside with us.
We haven’t had a trick or treater here in way more than 10 years. We do have two young families living on our small street now. One family goes back to their old suburban neighborhood. The other family kids go where their other parent lives which has many more houses.
I did get a small bag of candy, just in case. I doubt I’ll open it.
I might go to our Main Street Halloween event tomorrow from 4-6. It’s just fun seeing the kids all dressed up.
We have a ton of kids that come to our neighborhood so I have a big bin of fun sized M&Ms, Snickers, and Twix bars. We don’t dress up though and tomorrow we have a symphony concert so our lights will go out at 7 pm, which is when our town’s trick or treat officially ends.
Oh, no! Our old neighborhood friend just texted DH that they are cancelling our traditional Halloween driveway get-together due to the rain forecast. This is the first time this has happened, ever. I am soooo bummed. We return to AZ before the end of October each year just for this event.
At least I hadn’t bought any candy yet or made my jalapeño cornbread to go with the delicious chili the neighbor makes every year. That’s what I planned to do tomorrow. We have no backup plan as we live in a gated adult community, no TOT’ers here. I think I might cry.
Today, I was driving through a major street in our community and saw that the maintenance man was putting up a sign, at a local facility for the elderly, that was welcoming trick or treaters for Halloween treats.
I thought it was sad.
I hope they get some kids.
My Girl Scout CoLeader and I pre arranged ToT visits to take our older troop to several facilities on Halloween with the staff and elderly in late afternoon. In full costumes, the residents got a big kick out of it.
All three AL facilities MIL has lived in do a community TorT. They have been well attended. TorT’ing at facilities for the elderly and at community & church trunk or treats is huge here. Parents post constantly on the community Facebook pages, asking where the events are each weekend. (Probably because Halloween is typically cold & it gets dark early!)
We’ve had a steady stream of littles since 4 pm. My favorite costumes so far was the family themed costumes with a pilot, flight attendant, and ground crew ![]()
My least favorite was the kid that screamed in my face “just gimme gimme gimme”. I actually said “you say Trick or Treat” and “thank you” but she just screamed louder. She got one small piece from me but honestly I wanted to give her none. Her cohort all got handfuls. Parent standing on the side walk not saying a word. Do better dad!
Have a similar situation across the street. H went to a party/car show/ live bands party, when it comes to costumes I am a party pooper, recently attended a 60th birthday party, 2 days before checked the evite for the time, and figured out we were supposed to wear 60’s attire. Thank goodness for Amazon!
I had a bagel for brunch (a NJ bagel, I usually it half, they’re huge, but nope, ate it all), then I opened of the candy and have been grazing. I’m so stuffed, need something healthier than the glass of wine I’m drinking (is this considered fruit?)
Here’s our pumpkin guy. We are almost out of candy. Most everyone has been great. We will see what happens when we run out.
No trick or treaters here. And now it’s pitch black dark.
Love the spotlight too!!
Our town does a thing called “Skeletons On Main and Beyond”. It’s for the whole month of October. Meet Rose…she is my contribution because she is planted in a rose garden in our downtown. I need to pick her up tomorrow, and put her to rest for the next 11 months.
We’ve had a very good turnout this year, about 75 so far. I have to say, this is the nicest bunch of Trick-or-Treaters I can remember. Absolutely every kid has said “thank you”, and one young vampire also shook my hand when I gave him his full size bar!
We’ll leave the porch lights on until about 9.
I have had over 30 kids come by which is way more than usual! I’m glad I bought some extra candy.
I forgot our best kid. He dressed as Michael Jackson. H told the kid he could get double the candy if he could do the moonwalk. The kid did an awesome moonwalk, twirl, and went up on his toes. He was impressive! H gave him a bunch for that.
Husband skipped the party because it’s raining so he’s getting the door while watching football. So far four groups of kids: 18 kids total.
